There's more than one way to skin a cat. The method you're suggesting is certainly one, but jumbling up the schedule to compare results fails to take into account the pressure of time. If you start out losing matches, you're more likely to lose in the future because of the pressure and thinking you have to make enforced changes. You have to keep throwing your best players out there again and again to make up ground.

Whereas if you get off to a good start, the pressure's off, the mindset of the players is positive, you can take more risks in rotating your best players keeping them fresh, and you approach cup competitions with a different mindset, not having one nervous eye on the table.

Fact is, we started out scoring freely last season but conceding freak goals at the back (Assou Ekotto, Gerrard peno v Villa, two Carra missed headers against Spurs and Villa). This season, we are still giving up goals, but not scoring as much, and digging a hole in the league table that will have us severely under pressure to dig out of.

And the 'time pressures' and 'momentum' make up for the fact you're comparing teams like Tottenham and Aston Villa to Arsenal and the Mancs? Can't agree with that, sorry.

And if you're taking into account 'momentum', you need to adjust for the momentum we had from finishing 2nd versus finishing 7th. Or does that not fit the conclusion that's been predetermined?

21 pages and maybe three posts on the campaign threads this avo on a day when Hicks looks likely to gain full control of the club.

We deserve whatever we end up with.

5 games in and we're much the same as last year, really no better or worse. But just wait til the squad gets eviscerated.

He doesn't have to earn respect from faceless net warriors.  It is the match going support, and while they will turn eventually if we struggle all season, they won't do it after 5 games.
No one is saying turn on Roy but it is stupid to think Roy will be afforded the same leniency Rafa was from the fans. to be honest, anyone who suggests otherwise is lying to themselves.

Poor first half performance where our defense especially the center were a little lost  and then the pricks pull a wonder goal out to go up 2-0 which ignited our fight back. Of course we went missing again for their 3rd goal but pluses I saw were……

Poulsen looked like he can add a passing edge to the defensive CM but unfortunately our defense also needs more cover than he can offer. Someone needs to man up and offer more cover to our aerial game as we lost too many heading duesl today.

Raul looks very decent as to fill in where he did & not look a little lost in his first start in the league against UTD is not a bad start at all.

Decent reselove to get us back to 2-2…maybe we did not warrant a point today but nice to see some fight in us. Just need to show it on Minute 1 rather than waiting for the second half to show up.

Time will tell as the first 11 just played together for the first time I think plus Kuyt, Agger & Co will add more to the side if they get selected.  Too early to be worried about our form as it was always going to be a tough start to the season. Just need to get behind the team and support everyone. If you want to sit on the sidelines and write a love poem to our last manager fire away but at the same time SUPPORT YOUR CLUB!!!!!

Agreed... Call yourselves Liverpool supporters slagging off our Manager after 5 games, when what he really needs is our support. Really embarrassed! Best fans in the land...my arse... Starting to show the true colours now.

So how come Roy can get away with continually slagging off his team, saying how "hard" games like Brum and West Brom are, and how he'll be happy if we "contain" Man U? If he can't stand up for Liverpool, how are we meant to respect him?

Played with no real urgency today until the first goal woke us up. I'm still hoping this is because everyone needs some time to settle into the system to really get a feel of how to play with each other in the new tactics of Hodgson.

Slight upside is that our non-urgency/calmness gave us a sense of stability in the first half. We weren't penetrating, but we were keeping our shape very well and not panicking when Man U kept going on the attack.

Haha, I'm the one bringing him into everything? I'm clearly replying to all those who still seem to be supporting him over Roy and doing the comparisons.

I still hold hope that we'll get Rafa back one day with a stable board to support him. But at the moment, Roy Hodgson is our manager. He's doing shite, but what I don't understand is why he's getting lambasted, whereas on the next line people yearn for Rafa- a manager who didn't do much better last season (obviously last season's a natural comparison point).
IN 'our' defence - and I think I speak for quite a few Rafa fans here - on a pure 'enjoyment of football' level, I preferred Rafa's teams to Roy's, even in defeat. I never, or at least, hardly ever, came away from Rafa games feeling like we're going to deeply struggle even before the teams are named - under Roy I called what would happen against Brum, which totally reinforced my thought that we'd get done against Utd today, and we've been done in exactly the way I predicted both times (IE, screwed from crosses because both teams love to cross it and we're set up in a way that gives teams freedom to cross it in).

If you were a fan of Rafas, and not someone inclined to support the manager just because he is the manager, and you therefore really liked Rafa's tactical approach (again, not saying it's the be all and end all), it seems totally consistent to me to have issues, and big ones, with Roy's approach.

To be extra fair a lot of the sound posters who aren't giving Roy much time or patience pretty much called exactly this kind of football if he were to be appointed. I don't see why someone who supported the last manager, didn't rate Roy, didn't want him here, expected the dross football and hence results we've had so far, should ignore those (seemingly) well founded and accurate doubts and criticisms when the results haven't even been anything to write home about.

Unless you're a fan of Roy in particular, or his style of play as you've seen it unfold thus far, the only compelling reason to give him huge support is because that's how things are done, that's the 'Liverpool Way' - but again, it gets a LOT harder to believe in that when the new manager is self evidently the appointee of a board who couldn't give two fucks about the Liverpool Way, and wouldn't give a fuck even if it were expained to them in the most eloquent means possible.

I'm not saying it's right to 'lambast' Roy, and after my initial doubts I'd like to think I'm at least trying (though not necessarily succeeding) to be as positive as I can while still being honest and realistic, but it doesn't seem to me to be a hard thing to understand - it makes complete sense, rightly or wrongly.

EDIT:

If there's a group who doesn't make sense to me it's the shills who lambasted Rafa for his 'negative' tactics and 'stubborness' who, thus far, are very loudly supporting Roy and urging us all to remember the 'Liverpool Way', which they felt no need to apply to Rafa whatsoever.

I get where they were coming from with Rafa, what I don't get is why they like Roy so much thus far - though I expect that'll be changing hugely if we don't get much better results very soon.

I dunno what to say really.

First half was a spineless performance, I can't recall us playing well in the first 45 of any of the games the season. I'll be honest from 2-2, I didn't expect us to come back to 2-2 but you knew those dirty manc bastards were going score sooner rather than later. Lets be honest, the scoreline flattered us and it could of been much worse.

Again not many positives to take from the game today. It's Northampton next, right?

It seems that a big focus in training is ball retention. We're doing a lot of ball-keeping, passing it around, midfield to the back and square and forward and square and back again... While possession is key, we're simply not showing the intent to get the ball forward with the urgency that is required to score against any well-drilled side.

I think Raul could ultimately be the solution to this issue as he does show signs of urgency when in possession. He seems to snap the ball to team mates with a sharpness that we haven't seen from a midfielder since Alonso. He's going to be good - today was not the game to see his full reportoire. Furthermore, Cole will have influlence in the attacking third. We just need to convert the possession into forward vibrant play. Roy will know this, of course he will.

On another point, managers coming out and arguing black is white is nothing new. Roy saying we were unlucky is just him putting a positive spin on the game. He won't really believe this. Bloody hell, Ferguson said they were the better team when we beat them 4-1 2 years ago. It's just a front and really not the concern some on here are making it out to be.

Why?!

Everyone thinks Man U are so great and have such strength in depth. Their bench today: Kuszczak, Smalling, Owen, Macheda, Gibson, Anderson. Our bench: Jones, Agger, Kyrgiakos, Lucas, Jovanovic, Babel, Ngog. As long as we can keep our players, we shouldn't just roll over and die. We are not far behind but for one area, our mentality.

Agree - the mentality out there was poor.
Conversion into the opposite - a fool who persists in his folly will become wise.

All you Rafa lamenters need to get over it, because it he isn't coming back. If I was you, I'd go up stairs take one last look at you Rafa wallpaper, climb underneath your Rafa quilt, switch off the lamp underneath your Rafa lampshade and sob your little hearts out to sleep on your Rafa pillow cover. Then when you wake up, RIP it all out and then come back and be objective about Hodgson, not comparative.

As for the game, nothing new that I  haven't seen already in the last 30 years. We pass the ball well but we didn't seem to get anywhere with it. We lacked width, but then, we've lacked width for years. Perplexed by Roy's left side sub but in the same respect it was good to see us going to 2 up front when we concede the second. On the whole a smattering of good play, with some really worrying moments, those being the allowance of both full backs to allow crosses to come in the box and I won't even mention the basic error of allowing them to turn and make the cross in the first place.

Player wise, The high for me was Raul, the low was both full-backs.
Tactic wise, Roy needs to get his team playing for the full 90, and not for just the last 45.

Would have been interesting had we held on for the point how different the reaction would have been on here.
I can be 100% honest and say mine would have been pretty much identical, to be honest. We got predictably outperformed and nothing I saw, even at 2-2, did anything to make me change my mind about how we're set up or the tactics we're using.

My hope is that we might get a fuller picture after the easier run of games coming up - the one big difference I would have had is that an utterly fluked draw would have given us a HUGE confidence boost going into those games.

We're not slagging the manager off after 5 games, we're criticising his tactics in this particular game which he got hopelessly wrong, tactics that utterly failed to take into account our weakness at crosses into our box which was clearly evident weeks before this.

We deserved a loss and we got a loss.

At this rate we might lose another 19 like we did last season under Benitez.

We have lost to Man City away and Man Utd away , so when we start losing to teams equal to Wigan Athletic , Sunderland , Portsmouth , Fulham aswell as losing to the usual suspects like Chelsea home and away and Arsenal home and away and Villa home and Spurs away and Utd away as per today and drawing with the likes Stoke , Blackburn , Wolves and West Brom and Birmingham just like we have already this , we have lots to moan about as take along hard look at last seasons campaign with what appears to be a squad stronger than what we have now and thats what happened , so let the season play out then judge the Managers imho .

Rafa did a lot more for us than Roy has done.

I'd hope so given the fact that he was here 6 years.

Rafa's first months saw us lose with spineless performances in the league - e.g. Bolton and Palace - but he did do a lot better in Europe, which kept his reputation afloat for 12 months. May well be a similar year.

We may not be a top four team anymore, but there's no chance our playing staff is now of a standard where we should be happy grinding out shitty home wins against West fucking Brom, or dancing in the streets at getting a draw at St Andrews due entirely to our keeper. The way Roy has us playing though, you'd think we were. We may not be spectacular, but we're a hell of a lot better than the way Roy has us playing

Well you're not wrong about United...they are in decline.

The solution to our off the field problems = get rid of the owners.

The solution to our on-field problems is simple, drop Carragher and play Agger + Skrtel/the Greek and the team pushes up another 10 yards and the midfield gets closer to our attack. Until this happens we will continue to be an epic fail on the pitch (in my humble opinion)

I agree totally with the sentiment.
In my ideal world he would have been sat in the dug out today, raising his hand and bowing his head with a wry smile when the Stretford End started their fat spanish waiter shite and Roy would be at Fulham (or England) doing well and I'd wish him well because he is a nice fella.
I broke my heart when he left and by left I mean kicked unceremoniously out of the back door by a piece of shit who goes by the name of Purslow and is devoid of any knowledge of this club, I still get emotional about it now.
But he has gone and Roy is in now through no fault of his own. And he has an uphill battle that I don't think he'll beat without the supporters turning on him.

As Liverpool supporter we have a duty to back him until the day he ain't here to be backed and I will, it's what Rafa would have wanted. Talk about him in the Inter thread, with me and the rest of those who still haven't got over his departure but it helps no one to compare.
Besides we have much more important issues to be dealing with.
Viva Benitez

Excellant post.

21 pages and maybe three posts on the campaign threads this avo on a day when Hicks looks likely to gain full control of the club.

We deserve whatever we end up with.

5 games in and we're much the same as last year, really no better or worse. But just wait til the squad gets eviscerated.

Get involved - PLEASE!
I agree in a way but I dont know if what we do will have any effect, If they allow him to take control they will have completely ignored what so many fans have been trying so hard to prevent
I for one welcome our new insect overloads

we are not on par with west brom. but we looked it. we have gerrard, we have torres, we have agger, we have reina, we have joe cole. any manager of worth could set up a liverpool team to beat a shit side like wba or trabzonspor or steaua convincingly. we have quality players, we are still much better than all these sides but they looked equal to us. i've got a good idea who's fault it is.

We're not slagging the manager off after 5 games, we're criticising his tactics in this particular which he got hopelessly wrong, tactics that utterly failed to take into account our weakness at crosses into our box which was clearly evident weeks before this.

We deserved a loss and we got a loss.

agree.
roy clearly went for the best players available rather than the right players for what was needed in the right positions.

Would have been interesting had we held on for the point how different the reaction would have been on here.

Mine would have been similar, but I would have been fine with a point. We created nothing, but two chances later we were back in it. That point could have been a big boost for morale. We could even have won this game, but after 0-2 became 2-2, we just handed the initiative to them.
