That terracing to the right of the superstore at Burnden Park was the away end, must have been fun being on that terracing, only to have your view blocked by a superstore.

We drew 2 2 in the cup early 90s, and I was in that end. It was a nightmare

Old Molineux was a strange quirky Stadium.

"Since its purchase by the sheikh of Abu Dhabi, Manchester City has managed to cheat its way into the top echelon of European football and create a global, immensely profitable football empire, ignoring rules along the way. The club's newfound glory is rooted in lies."

Fir Park, Motherwell.

The main stand was rebuilt with the money they received for Ian St John but the locals objected to it at this end, so they left it like that and it's still like that today.

South Bank was fucking massive.

It's great to see some of those old grounds in their prime, before they became crumbling, (even more) dangerous relics in the 70s and 80s. By then there were parts closed down, some terraces with the roof dismantled, clumsy terrace conversions and then there was Bolton!

Went on the Holte End for a League Cup Final replay once, absolutely massive but freezing and no way an intimidating terrace.

I went to Burnden Park about 94 I think, when they were in the Championship. Must have been the season they came up going off the post above with the Collymore winner in 95 (I remember that, December I think?). Was in the main stand with that Suoermarket/Terrace to my right and Millwall fans in between. Proper old school!

Some of the really old pics here are brilliant. Great thread.

The Shed, complete with barbed wire. Chelsea Chairman Ken Bates had these fences electrified, but the Greater London Council told him he faced legal action if they were switched on, so at the last minute before a Spurs game in 85 I think, Bates relunctantly didn't go ahead with his disgusting idea.

Pre Abramovich, Stamford bridge was up there with the funkiest grounds about.

Is this Stamford Bridge - is it even London ? Wasn't there an image of a design for the new main stand at Anfield when Parry was in charge, similar to this ?

There was something slightly similar. With a roof, of course. I saw it recently when I wasn't looking for it. Now I'm looking for it I can't find it.  ::)

It looked totally different to the rest of the ground. The aesthetics and symmetry crowd would have kittens if that had been built.  :)  As they would with most of the grounds in this brilliant thread.

Oh I love that story, cheers.

I used to sit in there sometimes with my dad.  Always felt like I wasn’t seeing as much of the pitch over to the right as I should be, but I could never work out why.

Old Hampden was something else though.  I remember going with my pals to some poorly-attended friendly when I was about 12 and being up the back of the long terrace (loads of which was fenced off and in ruins) and just being in awe of all that space.  It was like looking into the Serengeti, I’m sure there were herds of antelope further down.

It’s a damn shame that so many of these got torn down and replaced with garbage.  They really meant something.

Bramall Lane when it was shared between cricket and football.  It was like this until about 1970, I’ve always wondered how it worked.  Could you go and sit in the pavilion if you liked, and watch from 100 yards away?  Wouldn’t the lino feel awfully exposed?  Where did MOTD put the cameras?

Moscow Dynamo friendly in the late 40s, was it?  I’m sure I’ve seen it before and it had some good backstory to it.  That was a legendary tour anyway - my grandad saw them I think at Ibrox, and told me about them sneaking a twelfth man on after half-time by having a reserve stroll along the touchline in an overcoat, then throwing it off and sidling on when the ref’s back was turned.
