ah.  bugger.  skint were trying to sign this and wanted me to do the video.  we were thinking 40s style vargas girl pin ups doing a saucy little dance routine.  think 'destination unknown' from alex gaudino or benni benassi satisfaction but more cheeky.  it went to universal in the end which means some tired generica for the video.  booo!

dyed soundorom on the remix for 'sleep moods'.  only 34 spins on youtube so far - it doesn't get much fresher than that.

i prefer the original but this is interesting for some later night action:

Been a member and been using this excellent site for years for grabbing all my mixes etc....they recently got threatened with legal action by some twat company who suddenly claim to own the rights to all the radio 1 essential mixes so had to remove them >:(...but they have a huge archive of just about every mix, style and DJ out there (including a few of mine :P) which they have made free to all and anyone to play stream and download every sunday.... :D
Indeed...

this was big for me and getting another rinsing today.  the supermeyer remix of rufus wainwright's 'tiergarten' takes him into beach boys territory but on ketamine and multiplied by techno.  superb.

EDIT: 31mb file for your delectation.  this record is superb.  even if you hate house and techno it would be hard not to be touched by this:

really enjoying some re-postings of some amazing 90s house music from classic recordings.  set up by my original house hero derrick carter and luke solomon this is one of brett johnson's finest moments.  currently big for his 'temptation' vocal work out this is a stripped down edgy little piece of cocaine psychosis in the best possible sense: 'stucco homes' - brett johson (classic)

as a personal bonus i shared an office with these guys as i got my business off the ground 'back in the day'

Not sure this silly track will be to most people's tastes, but it was absolutely everywhere in Rome in 2005/6 and takes me right back there.

i like the picture - beautiful women maximising their washing machine utility are ok by me - but the track is a little full on for my tastes still i can see it going down well with the romans.  did you go to club goa?  i went to my first dc-10 party there a few years ago.  it was wall to wall ;D

strangely this track did not go down particularly well with the facebook massive yesterday.  they clearly prefer it a bit more techy but this will always be my fave middleton moment as i think he's gone a lot more 'big room/mainstream' over the past few years.

haven't listened to this yet but harri is a superlative dj and the sub club is a reason worth visiting glasgow for and i don't say that lightly as my dad's from there originally and i have a thing for ladies with scottish accents.  oh and skinny ones with big tits ;D

http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=220&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

harri plays it deep and disco but with a purpose driven by house.  dominic is more on a tech tip.  when i used to go up there it was back in the days of only two types of music and i loved them both - house AND techno - but these days there a trillion shades of grey. you can always rely on these two to sort the wheat from the chaff and i can vouch for harri being a very good egg.  enjoyez-vous :D

The Subculture duo show us what a Saturday at the Sub Club is all about on this week's RA podcast.

Ever since electro, house and techno washed up on British shores, Glasgow has had a noticeably soft spot for electronic dance music, which has been in no small part due to the antics of James Harrigan and Domenic Capello. Together they've been responsible for the Sub Club's Saturday night programme for over 16 years, bringing some of the biggest international names in house and techno to what is arguably the city's most iconic venue. As you'd expect from DJs who experienced the house music explosion the first time round, their crates go pretty deep.

Domenic actually began his DJing career in the late '80s, foregoing his electro and breakdancing past to play on Friday and Saturday nights at a blues club outside of Glasgow. Meanwhile at the Sub Club, Harri was teaming up with Slam's Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle for their Atlantis residency, but by 1994 the Soma bosses had decided to move on. Having become a regular guest at Atlantis following his departure from the blues club, Domenic eventually took on the role of Harri's partner, and Subculture was born.

Not content with simply DJing, both have a number of productions to their name, with Dom racking up releases on Soma and Frantic Flowers with the funked-up techno of his Hutton Drive project, while Harri has turned his hand to a wide spectrum of house music under various different guises. It's behind the decks where they're most content, however, and you can hear it immediately in their diverse but coherent two-hour session for this week's RA podcast, which should serve as a perfect preview for their set in our room at Eastern Electrics later this month.

What have you been up to recently?

Harri: Apart from my weekly Saturday nights at the Sub Club... Unusually, I have been away from Glasgow a fair bit in the last few months. I did a two week tour of Australia, then back to Scotland for Rockness. We did a Sub Club party at Sonar in Barcelona with Steve Bug, and then five days in Croatia playing at The Garden Festival. A few weeks ago I played in Jersey and on Monday I go for a ten day family holiday in Spain. Apart from that, I have been working on a few remixes with The Revenge (under our Burnt Island Casuals moniker) and also co producing some stuff for Darkroom Dubs with Graeme Reedie of Silicone Soul.

Domenic: Helping the needy and troubled.

How and where was your portion of the mix recorded?

Harri: The mix was recorded in my house, using Serato Scratch and two Technics 1210s.

Domenic: I recorded it using two Technics decks, two CD-Js and a Pioneer mixer plugged into an external CD recorder in my record room at home.

Can you tell us a little more about the mix?

Harri: I was trying to make more of a warm up mix rather than peak-time, and to include some older stuff rather than just current tunes. I decided to leave the mix till the last minute, as I work better to a deadline. I tried to do one last night but was not that happy with it. It seemed to flow easier today.

Domenic: I wrote down some tracks (old and new) that I really wanted in the mix over the period of a few weeks, and then tried to work out the best way to get the right flow and feel in the running order. For me, when I first heard house and techno over twenty years ago it was like some sort of futuristic, electronic funk that had elements of all the music I had previously loved. Soul, funk, jazz and blues were being remade into something new and exciting using sci-fi style synth lines, raw basslines and drum machines. I still listen for that feel in a lot of the records I buy today, and I have tried to put that feel into this mix. I imagine that if there had been a club scene in Blade Runner, then this is the music they would dancing to.

What are your thoughts about the current Scottish licensing laws?

Harri: Licensing laws in Scotland are rubbish, I think people should be able to decide for themselves what time they want to go out and come home. On the plus side, it helps me get my beauty sleep :D

Domenic: Shit about sums it up.

Do you two ever plan on producing together at all?

Harri: Domenic and myself have tried to produce together on a couple of occasions, and I would not rule out future collaborations. We live on opposite sides of the city and have both been busy looking after our kids.

Domenic: Maybe one day, if i can get Harri out of the bookies and the pub.

What are you up to next?

Harri: I am going to Spain for ten days after the weekend! When I return I have a couple of remixes to finish, plus get some tracks finished for the Darkrooms Dubs label. Apart from my weekly Sub gig I have a boat party in Edinburgh and a Resident Advisor gig in London at the end of August.

Domenic: I'm looking forward to being back in the Sub Club. I haven't played for a few weeks. Also really looking forward to the Eastern Electrics party in August. I think that will be brilliant.

ah those halcyon optimistic detroit chords back from the days that e was so strong it made you gip in your hand as you started coming up.... :D  nice record.  i love kevin saunderson's basslines but really he's definitely weapons grade on the cross over end of the market.  i bought a compilation of detroit records back in 1987 that was packed with inner city.  compiled by neil rushton he went on to set up network where they released records by nexus 21 who went on to become altern 8.  like the beatles turned into wings.  or something.

this is their finest moment which i'm aware is a remix but its literally heart stopping in its amazingness.  its a remix of house master baldwin and features the haunting vocals of paris grey who also sings on 'set your body free'.  serious record; mega remix:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCetgNYauCk

and here's a link to my all time favourite saunderson banger.  under his e-dancer alias let this house work out spin and listen in amazement the way the bass line starts to slide off beat and then take over the record with a vibrating sense of dissonant awe.  BIG.  first heard as the last record played at my first ever wiggle - 1995 fact fans - by terry francis with the lights on.  he brought the fucking house down.  'human bond' - e dancer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqjHqE7-Ofw

its a banger so play loud.  actually that goes for both of them.

Those are indeed big tracks, the Baldwin track being more of a slow burner that draws you in, while the later is a banger.

Could anyone do me a favour and ID this track, hopefully this has worked;

another big system banger from when i were a lad.  it got used on the michel gondry ad for levis also listed.

'novelty wave' - biosphere.  i think it was juri hulkonnen under another nom de guerre.  the scandos were tearing it up at the time - joel mull's 'leaving ground ep' was big along with anything from cari lekebush.  i've always liked their vibes in that neck of the woods - reader i married one-ish - apart from the mega-banging stuff from adam beyer.  i know, i know he has his fans but i'd play it at 33 if i was ever going to give it a spin.

anyways this is awesome:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp7nWMo6UE0

if your attention span is short just jump to the ad.  its a peach.

actually in terms of bangers this is an all time classic.  dave clarke is a knob - trust me i've had to make a video for the fucker - but he makes some really excellent records.  this track is red 2 (one of a series of 4) and while this links is pitched up to 'tech assault' its classy enough to have fully crossed over to the cooler house djs of the time.  nowadays maybe i would think about it at minus 8 but in those breakneck times minus 4 did the job for prime time.  big record though in this form pretty much unrelenting:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhMxAuD6jNU

EDIT: this was said video.  techno's answer to enrique igleseas.

another banger best pitched down is this fire cracker from jeff mills in his purpose maker guise.  casa - house be definition in spanish - is prime time party action for any theatre of operations.  minus 4 minimum from me but we can all get carried away.  i first heard this played out at bora bora in ibiza summer 2000 after a big night at ku then 'carry on' at space when it still had an outside terrace.  we stumbled down to bora bora and i remember the dwarf door man - johnny - from the manumission hotel holding my then bosses wife over the toilet as she puked and we stumbled sweatily on to the beach in the middle of some typically immaculate italians.  full power.

two more classics from the attack dusted off and the first is from masters at work.  its their first ever track and effectively a debbie gibson remix.  its superb and my favourite track from the duo as i'm not a massive fan of the latin vocal end of their sound.  still this is a stripped down four on floor workout and an absolute banger:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIdfsLVtEKw&feature=player_embedded

the other track works very well with the former.  its a farley and heller remix of dsk's 'what would we do (if they took our love away?)' and again its a dub.  both tracks were massive at the sound factory back when junior vasquez ruled the roost and this is another classic 90s house record.

so hot right now.  jamie jones beefed this up in abelton for his essential mix but the original still does some damage.  'cold world' by jamie principle though due to trax being a cowboy outfit also came out under producer frankie knuckles name.   big, dark, druggy and mega-gay.  all good by me.

EDIT: actually just realising how well this goes with the robert james tracks previously posted.  hot creations is really taking it back to basics and finding the essence of what make a house record tick.  very literally.  good times.

i have no idea.  i got totally bored of that sound by the mid-90s when the whole drag queen diva thing just got so completely played out.

still if you want to go back i recommend the tribal mix by junior vasquez as a great reference for that sound in its prime/.

this is the farley/heller fire island dub.  for those that don't know fire island is where rich gay men have gone on holiday upstate new york since the 70s.  its also were tom moulton sort of invented disco with his carefully spliced mix tapes which used to play on reel to reels at the pines hotel.

farley and heller used the name for their more disco inflected stuff and this is one of the best remixes they've ever done.  we heard vasquez spin this for about 25 minutes before going into muzik xpress and then london xpress by xpress2 at the sound factory back in the day.  really most impressive compared to what we were used to in the ldn.

'get your hands off my man' - junior vasquez (fire island dub)

EDIT: vaquez back in the day pre meth addiction
