As a four year old, I had too many teeth so went to the raf dentist (my dad worked on an MOD base in Germany at the time) He started pulling a tooth out and I was screaming my head off. Eventually the tooth came out and the dentist asked me why I made such a fuss. At this point I pointed to the syringe full of anaesthetic sitting waiting to be injected. Today it would have been an opportunity to sue them instead my mum said lets take you home and the dentist gave me a sticker.

I had to have the rest out in hospital under a general anesthetic. It was only two years ago I summoned up the courage to have a check up and my dentist is brilliant. I needed one filling and I hardly felt a thing. I am now over my terror of dentists.

sorry mate but I don't believe that a child of 4 gets a tooth pulled under local. My lad had 4 teeth out at the age of 4,under a general aesthetic, and as it happens it was a RAF dentist and in Germany. ;)

Had 3 of my back teeth taken out today. Was absolutely bricking it, didnt help to find out the guy before me took 90mins to have one tooth pulled cos it had fused to the bone. In the end it only took about 20mins to have my 3 taken out and it was all pretty painless. Starving now but afraid to eat.

Got to have my two top wisdom teeth taken out, dentist says he can do it in two half hour appointments. supposed to have first one done today, but i might not be able to get there with the roads being all icey. Dont know how i feel, as im not looking forward to it, but i had myself all geared up!

If you have to have wisdom teeth out tell the dentist you want knocking out he then has to refer you to the hospital where you get in done for free  ;D

Where top teeth have no opposing teeth there are no biting forces so the tooth is effectively redundant. They can also begin to drop down (over erupt) over time because there isn't a bottom tooth there keeping it in position.

If you're not currently experiencing problems and would rather wait, do so. Your dentist should keep an eye on it and if it causes problems you can have it taken out later.

Thanks for that Kez. That genuinely helps me understand the reasons better. My dentist is brazillian and I have to speak portuguese with him. As I don't really use dental vocab much, we're not always on the same wavelength! I guess I will probably bite the bullet and have it out before it becomes a problem. Dental problems are always painful and expensive!

One issue I have since leaving england - i had an NHS dentist there luckily, and as they are all private here, I just find it really hard to trust any of them. I'm always cynical that they invent problems to make money. I've had some dentists try to get me to change my metal fillings into the white ones but I don't see the benefit. At least on the NHS you know they're only going to do something if you really need it!

I also have a private dentist and he told me I should never do that and a filling should only be changed when there is something wrong.Mind he does want to change my bridge for a implant, for the nice sum of €2000...

That's cheap. £2.5K here!

Slick_Beef - on the subject of amalgam (silver) fillings I agree with Pheeny. All fillings naturally need replacing after a time and if you want white, go for it, but unless there's anything wrong you're best off waiting. Every time you have work done on a tooth it traumatises the nerve, so the less work done the better. There is no concrete scientific evidence that amalgam fillings cause any problems. The problem was the mercury that used to be put in silver fillings decades ago.

For the record for anyone taking any of my advice, I am not a dentist! I just sue them for a living ;)

Went today. Same shit, almost choked on the water again. The tosser was suffocating me that I had to physically move myself so he'd back off. He goes 'are you drowning? Sorry'. Then he eased off and I had no problems then. Looks like hes trying to get through as many patients as possible so he can finish the day early.

c*nt (even though hes a pretty decent guy).
If he retires I'll eat my fucking cock.

Any tips how not to choke or suffocate to death at the dentists?

Everytime I go I'm struggling to take a breather or avoid choking on all that water they're spraying into my mouth. Do they not teach dentists to allow a patient to breath a little? Each time the water builds up, you can feel you're about to choke so you frantically try to gulp. But this causes panic and thus increases your rate of breathing but you can't breathe cos the fucker is suffocating you to death.

I hate the dentist, always have done.  My dentist used to put a suction thing in my mouth and leave it there all the time, and the assistant would squirt water in.  It used to drive me mad.

In the end I changed dentists and told the new one I hated all of that so they dont do it.  The assistant just uses the sucker as and when it is needed and no squirty water at all - dont know what they do instead because I have my eyes shut.

Anyway, the new dentist is great and the surgery has the added bonus of just being down the road from Melwood so I have a gander to see if I can see anyone every time I go :)

Is that the Deysbrook Dental Surgery?
I think that used to be where Sarah Jaynes hair studio appears to be now (according to Google Street View) or at least that's where the first Dentist I went to was in about 1960. Used to go up some stairs at the side. I've still got vivid memories of the gas mask they put on me, and the very sore and tattered gums when I woke up afterwards.

I actually like my dentist.  I stopped going for about 5-6 years after a bad experience at a uni dentist.  Ended up in mega pain one year and went to a dentist a friend advised on.  2 root canals later and my fear of dentists were well and truly behind me.

They had a screen at the place i went to so I could watch everything they were doing.  It's actually a great way to get over "the fear" imo.

Does anyone know how long it is before dentists take on new patients? I haven't had a dentist for 4-5 years and I need 1, rang my 2 local ones and they're not taking on at the minute.

Finally had my over-erupting wisdom tooth taken out this afternoon, on the third attempt.  First attempt was scheduled for January but I embarrasingly bottled it.. It wasn't my normal dentist and she said, "So, what can I do for you today?" and whilst my mind said "Take out my wisdom tooth", what came out of my mouth was "Just a cleaning today please!"... so 50 quid wasted on a cleaning I didn't need. On the second attempt, the dentist went home sick so didn't turn up to the appointment. Plucked up the courage for attempt 3 today and naturally, it didn't hurt a bit and was over in all of 2 minutes. C'est la vie.  ::)

edit.. oh and she said I can only eat ice cream for the rest of the day. Bonus.

haha, not nearly as dramatic as it sounds, luckily. I'd had one taken out already, so that meant it's opposite number carried on growing outwards, as it had nothing to bite against.

I had an abscess a couple of months ago and decided to have the tooth out. The pain was horrific when the dentist was trying to get it out. After the anaesthetic wore off the pain I suffered for a good half hour spell was unquestionably the most horrific, stomach churning pain I have ever experienced in my life! It’s put me off going for life!

Yesterday, I bit into a piece of bread, and my tooth snapped in half, and now its catching on my gum and the remaining part of the tooth that is left is split too, so I can't chew anything on that side.

Called the emergency dentist this morning to try and get it sorted, get through to someone who says I get an appointment based on my answers, and the computer decides yes or no. After going through the questions, I'm told I can't have an appointment because the pain doesn't sound bad enough - never mind the fact ive got half a tooth and its split, and its catching on my gum, so I've now go to phone tomorrow and lie to the operator to get an appointment, complete piss take.

My wisdom tooth came out couple of months ago and no pain at all, didn't feel a thing. Now another one is coming out and the fucked hurts so much. Feels like the bottom right part of my mouth is massively swollen, cant wait for it to just pop out and be over and done with. Got to phone tomorrow to arrange a check up at the dentist as well so I'll see what they say about it.

Then goes on to breaking the tooth while pulling it out and fiddling around for ages. I was about 10 at the time, worst childhood memory ever.

I hate this thread!

Damn, what a couple of years difference makes.

Found a Dentist who was much better than the butcher from years ago and now not bothered one bit about going. Obviously no one likes the expense but aside from that not bothered at all.

Paying about £28 for a check up every 9 months or so now. That will do me.

Just back and had a very pleasant surprise, new Dentist has joined the practice and she is a looker, she also fixed my tooth so no need for a new one, although she did recommend getting it replaced within the next couple of years.
