I know that whole album is regarded as a bit of a Stones pastiche but I still like listening to this when I’m determined to feel miserable. Forgotten how to embed, sorry.

Cry Myself Blind - Primal Scream

And then the emotion in this one gets me as well. He sounds proper gutted.

I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come up with a fail-safe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us
I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late
And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town again
In my life, I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong
I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
I hope I never get sober
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way
I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
Hand in unlovable hand
And I hope you die
I hope we both die
Sit down, shock is better taken with bent knees.

Surely, No Children is the opposite of a break up song?

It's about a couple going through a divorce.  The band have a bunch of songs about the same couple.
Sit down, shock is better taken with bent knees.

any songs come to mind about unrequited love specifically?

The Saturday Boy by Billy Bragg. It actually includes the word "unrequited".

It's Too Late by Carole King. IMO no-one has ever written more eloquently about the end of a relationship The chorus is like a knife in the heart:

And it’s too late, baby, now it’s too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin’ inside has died
And I can’t hide and I just can’t fake it

Good piece about it here:

https://americansongwriter.com/carole-king-its-too-late-behind-song-lyrics-50-years-later/

Edit: I didn't realise that Toni Stern wrote the lyrics, and not Carole King, until I read that article. You learn something new everyday as they say!

Guns N Roses - I used to love her

Okay
Such bitchin', fussin', cussin'
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, mm, yeah, but I had to kill her
I had to put her six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

I used to love her, ooh, yeah, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, ooh, yeah, but I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her, so I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard, whoa, yeah
Ooh, yeah

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, mm, oh, yeah, but I had to kill her
She bitched so much, she drove me nuts
And now I'm happier this way, yeah
Whoa, whoa, yeah

Take it for what it is

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, mm, oh, yeah, but I had to kill her
I had to put her, ooh, six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

This is possibly my favourite genre in Taylor Swift's discography, so I'd like to share some songs without taking this thread off-track and turning it into a diss thread. If you don't like it/her, just scroll past - no dramas  :)

She has two beautiful songs with Bon Iver, who have featured on this thread so I will start there:

Evermore:

And some others I absolutely adore:

This being an old thread I'm seeing some right belters on there, with some bands I forgot about.

Thought I'd bring a recent (maybe controversial!) song though: Once - Liam Gallagher

As ' break up' songs go nothing matches the hurt and bitterness of Mike Harts 'Almost Liverpool 8 ' ..whilst most songs are your soppy or the I will survive types..this is pure honest pain...check it out.

Lad I worked with was seeing this girl for about 7 years, they bought a place together, moved in and split up about 6 weeks later, she found she couldn't live with him. He was constantly playing Everybody Hurts by REM - I did point out that the song says DON'T top yourself, seriously thought he was going to do it at one point.

I find Stick Season annoyingly catchy and likeable (though I know it'll annoy the fuck out of many  ;D)

Video's shit, but it's his breakthrough track

https://youtu.be/JKrDdsgXuso?si=ejeH0Iw25ppJLGPw

As you promised me that I was more than all the miles combined
You must have had yourself a change of heart like
Halfway through the drive
Because your voice trailed off exactly as you passed my exit sign
Kept on drivin' straight and left our future to the right

Now I am stuck between my anger and the blame that I can't face
And memories are somethin' even smoking weed does not replace
And I am terrified of weather 'cause I see you when it rains
Doc told me to travel, but there's COVID on the planes

And I love Vermont, but it's the season of the sticks
And I saw your mom, she forgot that I existed
And it's half my fault, but I just like to play the victim
I'll drink alcohol 'til my friends come home for Christmas
And I'll dream each night of some version of you
That I might not have, but I did not lose
Now you're tire tracks and one pair of shoes
And I'm split in half, but that'll have to do

So I thought that if I piled something good on all my bad
That I could cancel out the darkness I inherited from dad
No, I am no longer funny, 'cause I miss the way you laugh
You once called me forever, now you still can't call me back

And I love Vermont, but it's the season of the sticks
And I saw your mom, she forgot that I existed
And it's half my fault, but I just like to play the victim
I'll drink alcohol 'til my friends come home for Christmas
And I'll dream each night of some version of you
That I might not have, but I did not lose
Now you're tire tracks and one pair of shoes
And I'm split in half, but that'll have to do
Oh, that'll have to do
My other half was you

I hope this pain's just passin' through
But I doubt it

And I love Vermont, but it's the season of the sticks
And I saw your mom, she forgot that I existed
And it's half my fault, but I just like to play the victim
I'll drink alcohol 'til my friends come home for Christmas
And I'll dream each night of some version of you
That I might not have, but I did not lose
Now you're tire tracks and one pair of shoes
And I'm split in half, but that'll have to do
Have to do
A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

Kayleigh by Marillion was on the album, but Script for a Jesters Tear (title track of their first album) was a much better song penned by Fish

So here I am once more
In the playground of the broken hearts
One more experience, one more entry
In a diary, self penned

Yet another emotional suicide
Overdosed on sentiments and pride
Too late to say I love you
Too late to restage the play
Abandoning the relics
In my playground of yesterday

I'm losing on the swings
I'm losing on the roundabouts
I'm losing on the swings
I'm losing on the roundabouts
Too much, too soon, too far to go
Too late to play the game is over
The game is over

So here I am once more
In the playground of the broken hearts
I'm losing on the swings
I'm losing on the roundabouts
The game is over, over, over
Over, over, over, over, over

Yet another emotional suicide
Overdosed on sentiments and pride
I'm losing on the swings
I'm losing on the roundabouts
The game is over
Too late to say, "I love you"
Too late to restage the play
The game is over

I act the role in classic style
Of a martyr carved with twisted smile
To bleed the lyric for this song
To write the rights to right my wrongs
An epitaph to a broken dream
To exercise this silent scream
A scream that's born from sorrow

I never did write that love song
The words just never seemed to flow
Now sad in reflection did I gaze through perfection
And examine the shadows
On the other side of the morning
And examine the shadows
On the other side of morning
Promised wedding now awake
Promised wedding now awake
Awake, awake, awake, awake

The fool escaped from paradise
Will look over his shoulder and cry
Sit and chew on daffodils and struggle to answer why?
As you grow up and leave the playground
Where you kissed your prince and found your frog
Remember the jester that showed you tears
The script for tears

So I'll hold my peace forever
When you wear your bridal gown
In the silence of my shame the mute
That sang the sirens' song
Has gone solo in the game
I've gone solo in the game
But the game is over

Can you still say you love me?
Can you still say you love me?
Can you still say that you love me?
Do you love me, do you love me?
Do you love me, do you love me?
Do you love me,
The Jesters Tear

Can you still say you love me?
Can you still say you love me?
Can you still say that you love me?
The Jesters Tear, The Jesters Tear
Do you love me, do you love me?
Do you love me?

Guns N Roses - Estranged

When you're talkin' to yourself
And nobody's home
You can fool yourself
You came in this world alone
Alone

So, nobody ever told you, baby
How it was gonna be
What'll happen to you, baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see
One, two, three

Old at heart, but I'm only 28
And I'm much too young to let love break my heart
Young at heart, but it's getting much too late
To find ourselves so far apart

I don't know how you're supposed to find me lately
And what more could you ask from me?
How could you say that I never needed you
When you took everything
Said you took everything from me

Young at heart, and it gets so hard to wait
When no one I know can seem to help me now
Old at heart, but I mustn't hesitate
If I'm to find my own way out
Still talkin' to myself
And nobody's home
Alone

So, nobody ever told us, baby
How it was gonna be
So, what'll happen to us, baby?
Guess we'll have to wait and see

When I find out all the reasons
Maybe I'll find another way
Find another day
With all the changing seasons of my life
Maybe I'll get it right next time

And now that you've been broken down
Got your head out of the clouds
You're back down on the ground
And you don't talk so loud
And you don't walk so proud
Anymore, and what for?

Well, I jumped into the river
Too many times to make it home
I'm out here on my own, and drifting all alone
If it doesn't show, give it time
To read between the lines

'Cause I see the storm is getting closer
And the waves, they get so high
Seems everything we've ever known's here
Why must it drift away and die?

I'll never find anyone to replace you
Guess I'll have to make it through this time
Oh, this time
Without you

I knew the storm was getting closer
And all my friends said I was high
But everything we've ever known's here
I never wanted it to die

Recently went through a messy break up. The Past is a Grotesque Animal by Of Montreal encapsulates it perfectly :wave

walk Away by the brilliant Cast always brings a tear to my eye  https://youtu.be/fbYkYKQdL7I?si=K-6M0psIfSddw66e

Lyrics
If you've heard all they got to say
You looked but turned away
Walkaway, walkaway
If you've said all you got to say
And now the words just slip away
Just walkaway, walkaway, walkaway
That's what they say, what they say,
what they say
You gotta walkaway
If you've played all the games they play
You played them yesterday
Walkaway, walkaway
If you've been, where they want to go
Seen all they got to show
Just walkaway, walkaway, walkaway
That's what they say, what they say,
what they say
You gotta walkaway
And now you must believe me
You never lose your dreams
And now you must believe me
We never lose our dreams
If you've proved all there is to prove
Got nothing left to use
Walkaway, walkaway
If you've done, all there is to do
There ain't nothing left for you
Just walkaway, walkaway, walkaway
That's what they say, what they say,
what they say
Walkaway, walkaway, walkaway
That's what they say, what they say,
what they say
You gotta walkaway

Another One that brings a tear to my eye , Ooberman and Shorley Wall
https://youtu.be/C3lTC-njReo?si=NyOQkuXdaNLWWStz
No tears from a summercloud
Til off the shore the stars come rolling out
As the voices fade
Tired of bad advice she whispers,
"Ooh, watch the moon
Can't you see? This is me."

Shorley Wall
She's selling seashells up on Shorley Wall
Where the ocean swells and leaves you small
She's selling seashells up on Shorley Wall
Just watch the moonrise up on Shorley Wall
Who could ask for more?

If life is an open book
She'd rather read the pictures for a while
Let the bastards moan
'Cause where she falls, she falls
and she says,
"Ooh, give me time
I need to find
Who I am inside."

Shorley Wall
She's selling seashells up on Shorley Wall
Where the ocean swells and leaves you small
She's selling seashells up on Shorley Wall
Just watch the moonrise up on Shorley Wall
Who could ask for more?

Can you see
The moonlight
Like a chandelier across the ocean where the mermaids sing?
Take your shoes off
And step into the ocean on the path of light

"Like a broken arrow
I'll catch the tail wind and draw the clouds
Burning sugar
As black as smoke
It clothes the walls
I open my heart
She sings when she hurts
It's good to sink deep inside
To my only touchstone
She's a friend in the dark
My strength, my memories
She delights in torture
She holds my hand but never shields me
Because the best shield is to accept the pain
Then what can really destroy me?
