Gambling adverts to banned 'whistle-to-whistle' in the UK
« on: December 6, 2018, 12:25:48 pm »
Only covers pre-9pm watershed sports and doesn't include horseracing events due to the gambling nature of the sport

Baby steps I suppose but no more half time 'wall-to-wall' adverts

I also guess 'whistle to whistle' means that they still do those pre-match odds

Instead you’ll get more push alerts from the app and they’ll ramp up social spend during the match instead

I think this is good news.

Only really noticed the amount of gambling adverts on TV when my young son (he's 7) starts naively commenting on it. He doesn't really know what it means but you really do notice how prevalent betting is around sport but mostly sport on TV.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

It's good. I wonder if it will also cover advertising hording at the ground. In match betting pops up on them too.

Absolute disgrace it is still allowed to be advertised anywhere and not classed the same as alcohol and cigarettes. Too many people making too much money, always an issue.

Good first step but afraid it'll probably be another 20 years and countless lives ruined before they finally ban advertising altogether.

Does "Television advertising" include showing football shirts with gambling sponsors on, like it does in France? I suggest not, but it would be good if it did.

Also covers 5 mins before the whistle so no last minute odds just before the kick off.

Half of the Premier League, most of the clubs in the EFL have shirt sponsors by betting/casino firms, even we even have our training kit sponsored by a betting firm.

How many sports have betting firms as a sponsor for a tournament, EFL, Rugby League, Snooker, Darts plus more.

I've done well out of betting but I wholeheartedly agree on a complete ban on advertising but as you say, too much money for that to happen any time soon. I also believe the industry needs to be better regulated because these fuckers get away with murder.

The betting industry has become (even more) insidious. It is EVERYWHERE! "Ah have a dabble mate, easy money" etc. It is all too easy for people with addictive personalities to lose it all. I've read a few stories about people who never previously bet in their life. A small bet later and a world of hell is unleashed.

The government has also 'delayed' its FOBT betting limit  >:( What are the odds of them doing a complete volte face at some point in 2019?

Speaking of those FOBT, was in the bookies putting a bet on the other week[only do football bet for the 3pm Saturday matches] a customer in complaining about something, & saying he'd just spent £300 on one of the FOBT machines.

You could see it coming years ago, after all the tobacco adverstising went.  It was obvious that gambling was going to take over, and it has.

Still damages health, but in a different way.

How long was tobacco advertising allowed, before it got binned?

That's a drop in the ocean sadly; with a max bet of £100 and games like roulette offering a spin every 20 seconds, you can wager around £18,000 in an hour if you play constantly. These machines 'only' have an edge of 3% or so, but Stake Decay means you can expect to lose 78% of your balance in 50 spins. Obviously it won't happen in such a linear fashion but you get the point: a 3% edge is enormous when you bet 100 times or so.

Yeah that's one of the big issues, so many people with mental health issues and addiction problems that it can ruin along with stamping a whole betting culture into our society that we bring everyone else into. I can bet if I want, so can you or anyone, we all know its there, but hammering advert after advert at people 24/7 is just encouraging people that are more vulnerable to it.

Exactly mate and then there is the entire 'If the Fun Stops. Stop." campaign. As if that will stop addicts  ::)

"Yeah mate, I know you're an alcoholic but if you wake up covered in vomit five days a week, you're not having fun so maybe stop, yeah?"

The industry does little to help problem gamblers. Anyone who has read Tony 10 knows that Paddy Power himself rang Tony when the site was down so he could place a bet. Tony was down maybe six figures at this stage.

For me it is a fantastically horrible way to emphasise how far behind we are in mental health understanding and the backwards views society still have on it.

Cigarettes are addictive as is gambling, as are narcotics or alcohol, yet because one of them doesn't have both mental and (literally) physical symptoms/illness, then it's perfectly ok for the government to allow businesses to keep pushing it.

Don't agree with that. Unless you're proposing banning the whiskey, beer and gin threads as well?

There's nothing wrong with having an occasional gamble just like it's enjoyable to have an occasioanl drink and I don't think people should be prevented from discussing such things on a forum.

Aye but its a forum, its not like an advert during a football game. If you don't want to read about gambling, don't go in the gambling sub-forum much like if you don't want to talk about beer etc, don't go in the good beer thread.

Very good news. I'm quite Anti-Gambling but agree a total ban is stupid, it just needs to be controlled.

Gambling is so rife in football nowadays its almost spoken about more than the game 'oh I had them on my 12 game accumulator', 'more than 3 goals, I've gone for' is what i hear more than the acutal game. Gambling on shirts, gambling on billboards, gambling in programmes, gambling before and during games, its literally impossible to ignore and the younger generation probably think that is how you interact with the sport.

People having apps on their own phone etc is fine as it's their choice, just don't shove it people's faces 15 times a game

Ban its advertising everywhere. There's about £150m worth of sponsorship on match day kits in the PL this season.

On a side note, I never gamble on a sport I follow. It wrecks the whole experience for me. Betting against a team I support just doesn't reconcile with my love of sport.
