Varane next to Maguire? Not so good. Varane next to Van Dijk? Much better. Varane is still a very good player, but he was never the defence leader at Real Madrid. He was always the wing-man of Ramos ...

Nice attempted save there, good effort.

The midfield was shite last season with the exception of the games Fabinho and Thiago started together (Wijnaldum was ever present).

If Thiago was as durable as Wijnaldum then the midfield would be less of an issue.

Yes but Thiago is not the answer due to the amount of times he has been absent. Keita should be our main midfield player but he’s neither fit nor good enough (I think if he had been fit then he would have improved).

Our midfield is a long way off City’s and Chelsea’s. If we had either of their midfield then I would suggest that we would be neck and neck with City. Our keeper, defence and attack are as good as any team around but we have a midfield that changes every week and is not good enough.

The sensible thing would be to tie one up to a new deal (really needs to be Mo), sell one in the summer and sign a younger replacement and then let the other one go in 2023 (or agree a new deal if both parties agree).

We aren't Man City who can afford to lose Aguero, Silva, Kompany, Toure et al for nothing at the end of their deals with a blank cheque to replace.

We should look to sell Mane.

I'd rather keep Mane as he is still an excellent player. Our front 3 are not the problem......we need a much better midfield.

With his age, form and wage demands i doubt you get more than £20-30m for Mane now.

Mane is one we should keep until the end of his contract, and extract the most of his peak years while he is with us

He's not at all - he's not mobile enough, and not quick enough.

It would be like adding the same thing to the midfield we already have.

Considering the fee we would get and the wages he’s on, I think we could find a younger replacement of a similar quality. Nkunku is seemingly the obvious choice.

In an ideal world, we would sign 2-3 players in the 23-25 age bracket who are ready to make that next step.

Realistically I think we will just get two, but I think that would be enough if we re-sign Salah.

They need to be absolutely brilliant players though. Obviously no 23-25 year old is nailed on, and no signing is nailed on, but given the seeming drop off of some of our players (Firmino for one) we really need their replacements to be right first time.

We should be looking at Dybala on a free. I think he can play the Firmino role and even though he's turning 29 this year, he would be a terrific squad option for 3/4 years.

Gets injured lots already in a slower, less intense league.  Would combust if he had to press like Firmino or Jota do.  At his age and the wages he'd want, no chance.

This is the way forward. Why have Taki and Divock on probably 200k combined who are not trusted to play when we can have one player (say on Jota's level) instead who will surely contribute more? We can give the minutes they get to a kid from the academy if needs be. Same thing applies to Ox and Keita, two players who unfortunately are too injury prone to be trusted upon. Wijnaldum must have clocked more minutes then both combined last year. For me similar questions should be asked of Thiago, even though his quality is undoubted. Personally I'd give Milner another year cause he can cover basically all the positions on the pitch adequately. But we must bring in his replacement next summer cause he will be a big loss for us.

I would agree we need to sell one big player otherwise the  budget will be the normal 20-30m plus sale's while City and Chelsea and will have the usual 150m budget in the summer. It's a shame but klopps final years could be wasted if we can't raise transfer funds and refresh the team.

The two areas of the pitch that need some work are up front and midfield.

Hopefully Mo signs a new deal. If he does, I would sell Mane in the summer, as he can still command a decent fee. Origi and Minamino also need to go. Sign a new striker/goal scoring winger. We’ve seen plenty of names. You would have to think there are several good options around the 50M mark.

Salah, Jota, newbie, Firmino, Gordon

Midfield. Milner moves on. Sell Keita and Ox. Just one robust player coming in will make a big difference. Tchoumeni rises to the top of the class for me, around the 40M mark, and if not him, someone of that sort of profile.

Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago, Tchoumeni, Elliot, Jones.

And now one player who can make a difference up front and in midfield. Nkunku.

I don’t know about release clauses and whatnot, but Nkunku and Tchoumeni could be bought for 80-100M.
Selling Mane, Keita, Ox and Minamino will see us go a long way toward bringing that sum in.

Then add in one or two young players like Carvalho at Fulham, who, with a fair wind and further development under Klopp, could become first team squad caliber in time, or if not, sold on after further development with us for a decent sum like Solanke and Brewster.

All of the above is very doable, and also living to our means. Midfield and attack is refreshed, the talent level stays high, and the age profile comes down.

Like I said, we are getting £20+ million for Wilson and Grujic on July 1st. Selling AOC, Origi and Phillips to PL clubs will also bring in a decent return. We could also get some change for Davies, Ojo and Woodburn from the SPL/Championship. With the wages of Milner, Adrian and Karius also off the wage bill, we will be in a solid situation.

Despite what people are saying around here, we don't really need too many new signings. A forward, a midfielder and an experienced 3rd choice goalkeeper are probably the only new senior players we need, plus of course some talented youngsters.
