Milner/Trent + Robertson/Moreno - these are some decent FB combinations for home games against the lesser teams.

Clyne at RB will be regular and Gomez will get games. Not sure about Milner at RB.

He was taking risks with intricate passes in behind the Palace team, often debutants play it safe so this was a good indicator for the type of mentality this lad has. Proper trusts his own ability, good to have.

I think he said in his interview after the game Jurgen just told him to go and play his natural game and to trust himself. I know it's only one game and against a side we expected to beat but fuckinghell, isn't it good to have someone at left back and for it to not be a worry? He just looks a player. Oozes calmness. First couple of passes went astray and I watched him closer than others after that to see how he would react. And he just kept playing, he played those same passes until they connected. Some beautiful little give and go's and dummy runs. As another poster said, looks like he has been here for years. Was it our own royhendo who did that piece posted in his transfer thread stating how he used to dictate games from full back for Dundee? Certainly saw evidence of that today. Like I said it's only one game, but from what I read from Hull fans and that piece by royhendo (?) I've been excited and todays game seemed to fit in with those previous comments.

I've genuinely been looking forward to seeing him play because you need a settled back four and this now looks like one less position in that back four we have to worry about. We're in good hands here.

And you obviously can't win the league without a Scot so he's good enough for that alone.

Rafa Benitez: "I’ll always keep in my heart the good times I’ve had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager."

played well today, very comfortable in an attacking situation and well balanced when shifting feet. He can be pleased with today but there will be 12-18 months before I judge him. Really hope he takes this opportunity. Great to see a jock back in the team (just as long as it isnt Charlie Adam).

With him, Trent, Mane and Salah in the side, we have some proper speedsters along the flanks for the first time in ages. If anything, his perfectly timed overlapping runs behind Mane and Firmino were a close second in terms of attributes to his crossing.

He could easily nail down that LB position. You don't need to be amazing to be one of the better fullbacks in the league. Good debut.

Finally we have a decent reliable left footed  everyday LB.

Nice debut from him, unlucky not to have 2 assists today.

When was the last time we had a decent, reliable left footed every day left back?

MOTM today for me. The only shining light in a poor first half but he was brilliant throughout. Not ashamed to admit that I hadn't seen a huge amount of him before today but those left footed crosses...wow, take a bow son!
We’ll still finish in top four - and they won’t. You can quote me on this in May.

This team needs more pullbacks from the byline rather than crosses to the lone striker. Robertson showed good timing on couple of occasions to get in behind which was very promising especially with one underlapping run in the second half where he displayed good sense of timing and off the ball movement.

True that. He has a heck of a good cross on him, but we don't have the attacking players to capitalise really.

What a debut  8)

looks like our fullback depth is a lot better than what most people thought coming into this season.  And we've managed to fill out our depth on the cheap.

Makes it easier to spend big to address needs in other areas.

I think we have already played more games without Milner & Clyne as fullbacks this season, than the entire previous season.

Really impressive debut. He'll face much sterner tests of his defensive capabilities than today, but his offensive play was encouraging. Didn't go hiding when a couple of passes went astray and was always available for a pass.

Club      Season     Minutes Played   Expected Assists
Liverpool   2017/18   90   1.21
Hull      2016/17   2,741   1.39
Hull      2014/15   1,528   1.07

Robertson just put up a full seasons expected assists numbers in one game. :D

By way of comparison - Moreno was 4.23 xA for 2015/16 in 2,546 minutes (his last full season). Milner was 3.95 xA last season (although only 2.11 from open play) in 3,170 minutes.

When was the last time we had a decent, reliable left footed every day left back?

Fabio aurelio was decent, reliable, left footed but wasnt every day.

Risse was decent, unreliable, left footed(very) and everyday.

All the other left footers arent worth a mention and i'm born in 85 and i've never seen one as you described since I've supported Liverpool.

The irony is..

Our best left back in the past  25 years imo was arberloa at left back. Second is james milner.

Both right footers..hmmm.

Most of the best left backs have been right footers though. Maldini, Zambrotta, Fachetti, Zanetti, Lahm, Nilton Santos, Brehme.

There are advantages and disadvantages to having a right footer at left back. Against a compact, low-block the disadvantages are glaringly obvious. Plus most of them were very useful with their left foot anyway.

Very, very impressive going forward today, he should've had two assists in the first half alone if not for poor finishing. He wasn't really tested defensively, but he surely made an impression. Made up for him.
