This thread is absolutely bloody ridiculous.  How can you possibly predict 5 years time, like some people are trying to do here?
I don't agree, he'd go to Legoland. Bye.

Well I think it depends what you mean by one club player.  I think it can either mean literally one club in a career, or one main club in a career.  With Carragher I think it will be the latter; i.e. he will not consider ever playing against Liverpool in a top division but once it becomes clear that he is no longer good enough to play very often for Liverpool he will choose to prolong his career for a year or two in a lower division (expanding his football education in the process) before coming back to LIverpool as a coach.
In the same way that Thommo had a year or 2 at Sheffield United, he might do something similar at Crewe or similar.

I see your point, i still think he'd stay and maybe take on a coaching role. I guess only he knows.

That reply is bloody ridiculous.
Of course no one can predict. But the thread is about who people think may possibly be here then, or who people want to be here then.

For the record

Carson (Bright prospect, only young
Carra (with some involvement in coaching etc...)
Hobbs (another prospect, if he fulfils his potential...)
Sissoko (very talented in his younger years, imagine in 5 years with a few years experience)
Pongolle (If he has the patience to stay on the bench for a while)

Cant think of too many more, I think Gerrard will go by then, possibly abroad. Don't think he'll go to Chelsea after all the debacle of the last few seasons.

i can not see rafa leaving us for madrid because he likes the fact he has so much responsability and i dont think he could go back to being just a coach .

Well I can because Madrid is his hometown and boyhood club, and we ourselves have had little more than hometown loyalty to depend on these past few years. (Gerrard, Carra)

With regards to the question;

Carson, Gerrard, Carra, Warnock, Sissoko, Reina. I am one of what seems to be a small percentage of supporters who believe that Gerrard's loyalty is genuine. He'll still be here when he's 30. I forsee a big club putting in a massive bid for Xabi, he's simply too good. Garcia is about 27 now, he'll be ancient (in footballing terms) for a playmaker in 5 years and will rightly be offloaded. Warnock's still young, as is Carson and Sissoko, and I hope to see Reina becoming a mainstay between the posts.

Most of the Spanish lot will be gone because either Benitez will carry on performing miracles and he will be poached by Madrid taking Garcia and Alonso with him, or will be sacked after 6 years and the Spaniards wont hang around after he is gone.

3 things about that:

1. Why would Rafa go to Madrid - he would have very little control on team affairs due to Perez
2. Alonso wouldn't go to Madrid as he is from the Basque country and he would get shot if he ever went back there due to the political problems
3. Garcia wouldn't go to Madrid because he is a Catalan (he stated his love for Barca in the pre-match to the CL Semi last year), and again the political rivalry.

I agree with the last two, Xabi and Luis are less than likely to go to Madrid. But I'd expect Rafa would not turn down the chance to manage his boyhood club, once he wins everything here at Liverpool, o'course.

I don't think Alonso is going to be able to avoid Madrid's attentions forever. And the young guys are just based on the fact that they're 17ish now...and they will either be on their last year or in the team by then. Gerrard is just me wishing. He'll probably be taking his last pay check in spain by that time.
The opinions related above are in no way to be taken as anything more (or less) than those of an bored mind.

(And Rafa, Paco and Pako)

Would love Luis to be, but would be quite surprised if he's still here by 32.

Be interesting to look at this in 5 years time, as I doubt anyone would have got 6 right from 5 years ago now. (I can only think of 4?)

i think it's worth looking at the Utd team of 94 (to me their best team of the 90s) and then seeing what players were still there in their treble year of '99.

Goalkeeper - Schmeicel
Defenders - Bruce, Pallister, Neville, Irwin (their whole back four)
Midfielders - Beckham, Keane, Scholes, Giggs (their whole midfield)
Strikers - Solksjaer

So the bulk of their team were still there 5 years later - quite a few players from their squad had gone, and a few substandard stand-by's were brought in (David May springs to mind) but it was pretty much the same team.  Now the advantage is that the team was filled with top quality players - the midfield and goalie in particular.  But look at the defence, surely they improved with familarity - if we could keep Finnan, Carragher and Warnock (and a.n.other) for 5 years, surely they'll be solid - especially so with Reina still behind them.
Our midfield - if we keep Gerrard, Alonso, Kewell and Garcia - surely we'll be a better team than if we constantly chop and change.
We have some top class players here now - and we're hopefully going to be signing two more in January.  There'll come a point soon when we'll be best off keeping the same team as much as possible, and going back to the old Liverpool system of one oldie out, one young top class newbie in every summer.

Going  for a few of the youngsters there. Because of European rules I think we'll need a few of them in the squad . Also, the keepers are unlikely to be changed, Both young, Reina commanding and Carson steady as back up.

What's happened to 28 year old Alonso, 30 year old Gerrard, 32 year old Garcia, 32 year old Finnan, 32 year old Carragher, 28 year old Cisse?
I could go on...a lot of our current players will still be enjoying their peak years - particularly for their positions.
For Garcia read Zola, for Carragher see Adams, for Alonso see Gary Mac, for Gerrard see Keane, for Cisse see Henry, for Finnan see Cafu....if we change that much of our team in the next 5 years we'll win bugger all.

Cantona, Hughes, Kanchelskis, McClair

All strikers bar Kanchelskis who gave way to Beckham - hardly a step down.
My point was that whilst Man U as an example has some flaws because they had some top class players - whereas we may not - there are areas that benefit from consistency, rather than trying to fill each spot with a superstar.
Neville is slagged off regularly as a pile of shite - but has been the best, most consistent right-back of the last 10 years.
Irwin wasn't all that, in many ways a no-nonsense full-back, but you'd struggle to name a more consistent left-back in the 90s.
Bruce and Pallister as a centre-half pairing had all kinds of flaws, not least both of them were slow - but they won everything going.
Consistency has as much in it's favour as skill at times - and I'd rather we kept players that might be more you're consistent 7/10 - than try and fill our teams with players who can dazzle and get 10/10s.

I've gone on the balance of probabilities. The players will be in their peak years but not necessarily here. I'd love it if we built our championship winning side around Alonso, Gerrard, Garcia, Cisse, Finnan and the like but for each of them I can see reasons why they may be gone. The manager will be ruthless in some cases, some players will need to move on because Rafa may have a better player in their position and they need more regular football, they may want to be back in Spain, we may get an offer thats too good to turn down and have a player in mind for the position.
Very few players are irreplaceable and hardly any of our squad should be considered sacred cows.

You've quoted the likes of Cafu, Kean, Adams and Zola and i've got to say they are rarer than hens teeth these days. Players come and go all the time, even the top clubs.

Rafa has barely begun to shape his squad and there'll be more changes than most people seem to expect.

My list was erring on the side of caution, keepers have a low rate of turnover and we have 2 good ones, Carra is a nap, and a couple of the most promising youngsters i've seen in the reserves.

Ron. As I said earlier, I was wondering what the future held for the club and was thinking who was here 5 years ago and 5 years before that.

I thought a collection of answers from us fans would give a fair reflection of possibilities. Although anything could happen in this time, it also gives a reflection of where we are at the moment as far as progress goes

cant believe how many people have said cisse....ill be shocked if hes here next season.

Cos he's a goalscorer and, as I quote myself:
this means that Cisse becomes the striker we all want him to be, though he's a long long way from that at the mo

Cisse is one of those players who, if he succeeds, could potentially have a big impact on us. Thats why many have picked him out ahead of others. This is of course dependent on how he adapts to how Rafa wants to play, what new players are brought in, and how he improves the weaknesses in his game

Instead of spending every season trying to knock the current strikers and calling for a replacement, hows about giving support to the ones we have? We havent bought a successful striker (in terms of goals & apps) since Ian Rush in 1988!

Lets face it, Owen is the only player we couldve possibly bought that wouldve guaranteed goals, anyone else was just as unproven (either at the highest level or the prem, or both)
Some clubs were always destined for greatness...

I'd like to think that the buy youth policy will have born some fruit so that a couple of Barragan, Hobbs, Antwe, Le Tallec (looks good for U21's), Gonzalez or Carson will be here and contributing. Raven perhaps also.

Of the present first team which I guess is the question, I think
Carragher yes (at 32 will have lost nothing.)
Gerrard-yes  (he looks happy to me but maybe Barca/Madrid may come calling and fair enough but I'll say he'll be here.)
Alonso- no- Barca
Sissoko-yes.
Reina- no- Carson will have taken over as he goes back to Barca
Kewell-yes (imagine if he became awell established Kop legend-there'd be some humble pie being eaten). Suspect he will have retired by about 31.
Cisse-no- gone by July if not christmas
Garcia-no-back to Spain.
Riise-decent chance.
Warnock-no. Think we'll sign an out and out left back of quality in next year.
Crouch- very possibly yes. I think he'll have scored too.
