I assumed modelo and negra modelo was the same.

Same company but different beer, just like Spaten and Spaten Dunkle are different.

Ah ok.

Would have had both recently. Had the negra modelo in Vegas and it was good. Whatever I had in mexico was bland

Preferred corona. Not much to choose in mexico. Either them Sol or desperados

He and I both, also look for Bohemia and Pacifico.

Indio and Victoria are OK as well, similar to Negra Modelo. I drank loads of Victoria in mexico as it has a lower ABV and I was mucho thirsty.

Speaking of which, this is a good place to ask - any recommendations for flavourful, lower ABV beers? As in sub-5%. I go through a lot of Founders all-day IPA, which is a nice 4.7%.
Big fan of Lagunitas IPA but that is a hefty 6.2%, so much stronger than I would like.
Guinness is a good one at around 4.3% but that's more of a cold weather beer for me

Oskar Blues makes a fantastic session IPA.

As does Schlafly, and their session brown ale is not bad either.

AS for session IPAs, there seem to be more and more surfacing - the next craft beer trend?
Here are a couple I've tried recently that were pretty good:-

Stone Go-to IPA   (the best of the bunch IMHO)

has anyone had westvleteren?

sounds lovely - and hard to find, except for Pheeny I  suppose :D

According to some it’s somewhat overrated, the hype may have been (and still is) a bit over the top. And granted, there are a lot of great and even better beers out there. But still, this really is one of the best beers in the world, it has become bigger than tradition or craftmanship.

…it can truly be called a Belgian national beer treasure.

Alcohol - 10.0-10.2% ABV
Top-fermentation. re-fermented in the bottle, unfiltered, centrifuged or pasteurized.
Ingredients - Water, Westmalle yeast, malt, local hops, sugar.
Colour & Transparency - Dark, though clear, reddish/burgundy brown

Me neither. Was out walking in the Peak District recently and ended up in Buxton at the Buxton Brewery Tap, which is a good little micro brewery. But ended up with one of their experimental lambic style beers in my hand. Could hardly swallow the first mouthful. Not to my taste at all, although the fella next to me was raving about his pint. Must be an acquired taste.

Even I've not been able to get my hands on a Westvleteren, far too expensive in the one place I know that sells it in the town I live.

I have tried St. Bernardus Abt 12 which is said to be almost identical.

Anytime mate.

I would classify Stone has a harder IPA, their Ruination even more so.

In Chicago you should see some of the ales I told you about as some are from STL and each is available in Illinois.

What I find strange, even though the Abbey is only a few klicks from here (Tongeren) most of the local shops don't sell it,I have to go to either Liege or Hasselt to buy it.

There is one Café in town that serves it though!

Can anyone give me some examples of beers like this to check out please- these are my absolute favourites but I've not found many similar around.

Got one of these sitting in the fridge to try. The Erdinger Weissbier is great.

Right then rawkites, a few questions from a novice!

I know sod all about beers but looking for some recommendations. I'm usually the type who'll just drink whatever's on tap in the pub (your standard carling/carlsberg or an ale) but to celebrate the arrival of Jurgen Klopp I went and got myself a couple of bottles of erdinger weiss and I thought it was bloody lovely!! So firstly, what other beers along this lines can I get from the shop? (I'm in the UK). Secondly, are there any similar beers that are common in pubs rather than just bottles I can buy for the house?

My favourite German beers are: Augustiner Edelstoff, (Helles & Dunkel good too) Hacker-Pschorr Münchner Hell, Fruh Kolsch & also love a pint of Kostritzer Schwarzbier when I can find it. Last time I had Kostritzer was in when I met me mate down in Pi a while ago.

Has anyone ever used a home brewing kit? If so would you recommend it or is it a bit of an effort? Just asking as have an idea for a Christmas present for someone who likes their wheat beers and the like so thought it could be something different.

Any good/bad experiences?! Cheers.

just keep things sterilized and follow instruction. its all trial and error

we havent used them in over 2 years. we just use hops or grains now
