Has been very good recently as long he is not asked to play as one of the two in central midfield.

Isn't that where he's been playing though?

442 defensive shape, offensively (generally) CBs split, Can dropped (though carried the ball a few times) and Milner pushed into the AM area.

Yet another player who has improved under Klopp. I was sceptical when we began playing him in CM, but he's done better than I expected. Pleased to see his number of assists. We all knew he could work hard and help the team, but when he adds those assists and some goals, he goes from being a reliable player to something else. I'd say he's becoming a key player for us.

That pass to Lallana in the first half was Gerrard-esque. An absolute thing of beauty that I didn't think Milner had in his locker until now.

Nice little moment the other night as he was leaving the pitch. Took his shirt off and made sure the young lad got it.

Think he's everything and more we knew he was before he came. Professional, hard working, no fuss, a genuine team player who'll do a decent shift wherever the manager asks him to play. Done well for us this season.

It's also a matter of adapting to what Klopp asks of him - like so many other players have also done. 3 months ago he was still a headless chicken who ran all day long but didn't do much (an assist here or there, maybe a goal). In the last 3 months - he has cranked it up a notch or 2 even. He's been immense - especially given the late season injuries we had.

A number of players have turned a corner since Christmas. Can, Clyne and Milner have all been great since the turn of the year.
I think the same, can't stand him, but if you could have a £1million pound cheque or steve bruces head hollowed out and filled with pound coins which would you have?

Really think he's become an influencial player recently, hardworking, professional and a leader. My only thing is I think he is awful at corners, someone else needs to take them.

Totally converted on Milner. Was underwhelmed (though not completely negative) when we signed him - a neither here nor there signing I thought - and his initial impact. He worked hard, but I did not think he impacted the game enough. In addition, we had too many players who essentially had a similar lack of impact.

Since Jan/February he has been consistent, excellent work rate, always involved, and his running and ability to get into crossing and shooting positions. And his delivery is excellent. He has not been a revelation, but he has been excellent, showing form that he has shown with city and Leeds in the past. He has been influential, so my initial underwhelmedness (?) was misplaced. Happy if his form continues next season. He is a positive influence too I reckon.

I think most knew he is most effective when played on the right.
Will Klopp buy a top notch centre midfielder? We definitely need more quality in the middle. The final showed this was evident.

Really like James Milner as a player,at times this past season i felt some people laid the blame on him any time when we had a poor result almost like automatically and only grudgingly gave praise when he had a particularly good game.

It's like they had made their mind up on him beforehand or didn't like that he was a 29 year old experienced England international coming on a  free transfer from City with a big wage packet.

But watching him closely he always works more on the pitch than almost any other player and has a good end product too(nothing fancy mind), i only wish we had more players like him and would  have signed him 10 years ago.

Very good winger, better than I hoped for. Decisive, quick and very mobile. He offers something else than our other attacking midfielders with the running and directness. Just like Kuyt did.
Very average central midfielder though. Slow on the turn, average passing and pretty poor defensive awareness for being so experienced.
I was hoping that he would be more of a leader, but he focuses on his own job.

So what's his role going to be this season?

A major reason why I wasn't overly keen on getting him last season was I didn't see a role for him. As it turned out Henderson missed most of the season and Milner largely played DM/CM with mixed results but also was productive at RW. But with Mane coming in, Lallana finishing the season strongly I'm not sure he's needed at RW.

At CM/DM where Milner is weaker I think he struggles to get games. Henderson will return, we've added Grujic and there is talk of a player like Dahoud or Zeilinski coming in. To me that doesn't bode well for him. He reportedly left Man City to become a regular and in particular spend more time in midfield. I suspect things might be worse for him here now than they were at Man City.

We haven't exactly been ferocious in our pursuit of a new midfielder so there's a chance he could be a regular alongside Can this season, depending on Henderson's fitness. I don't think that's a good idea but he got plenty of games there last season and that may continue.

He's either our highest wage earner or 2nd highest and he apparently turned down more money for opportunity to play more at Liverpool. Is he going to be happy with that?

I can honestly see him starting. His numbers from out wide are excellent and he is tactically flexible with a load of game intelligence. It's invaluable to have that in your team.

There will be plenty of games that require grit and determination, someone to provide steel in the middle. He is one of our more consistent players. Other players we have, and the new ones we sign, may play with more guile, but since Gerrard left, there is no one to get stuck in. Hendo does, but he was missing for a long time through injury.

I just don't think he's a starter.

Which one out of Mane, Coutinho or Firmino do you think he starts ahead of?
Or if Midfield Henderson and Can?

I like him as a player, I just don't think he has the starting spot that he sacrificed money to get and I think he's in a battle with Lallana to even be backup up forward and likewise Lucas in midfield. I could see him getting less than 10 starts which is what a backup gets when there are only 45 games or so.

I expect him to start a lot of the big games especially away from home, probably wide on the right

I think you will be surprised as to just how many games he does end up starting. I think you will find that at times the likes of Sturridge, Firmino, Mane and Henderson may sit it out for Milner.

Not a chance. He was one of our best players last season, and Klopp chose him in every big game ahead of Lucas and Allen. I would say he's ahead of Henderson in the CM pecking order as things stand as well.

He gives us a great option as an attacking full-back, a central midfielder in a 2 or (preferably) a 3, or a defensive winger. Plenty of starts for him.

I see him and Lallana as the 12th and 13th men. Fantastic squad midfielders who will probably play too well to be dropped at times throughout the season.
