Tim Janssen, the club's rehabilitation physio, has just announced his departure from Rotterdam on Instagram. It is unclear where Janssen's future lies.
I think we can guess eh?

So Slot is 'Head coach' rather than 'Manager'. What does that mean exactly? Less say on transfers?

I would imagine (or at least hope) that it means nothing and it's like calling your janitor your "facility manager". It's why I don't get this obsession by the club to not call the manager the manager. Klopp was our manager, Slot is his successor, so he's the new manager. It's not that hard. Nobody knows how they'll have organised the work and devided the responisibilities behind closed doors just as nobody knew what Klopp's power behind the scenes even was. I don't care, if Slot is called our manager or our head coach, but he needs to be involved in transfers and help pick the right players. We've seen how important it is to get the right players for the team beyond just the data. We've also seen what a clusterfuck you get, when you sign players the manager doesn't want.

Having said that. Welcome Arne Slot, all the best and let's hope the three year contract is just the first of many more.

No opinion until after his first season for me. I've watched man utd praise all their new managers as world beaters before they even managed a single game. Ralf Rangnick suddenly became the godfather of gegenpressing who taught klopp and pep everything they knew lol. Its embarrassing.

He'll get praise if he deserves it and hopefully he will. Fingers (and toes) crossed.

I'm optimistic about life under Slot, to be honest. There are various pieces during the round from journos like James Pearce, Melissa Reddy and Paul Joyce that go into more detail on the man and what he's expected to bring, and it all sounds very positive. It also helps that I implicitly trust Michael Edwards to get it right.

Interestingly, it sounds like the other two names under serious contention were Ernesto Valverde and Luciano Spaletti. Shows how little journos actually know among all the Amorim and De Zerbi smokescreen.

High-tempo style and improving players: why Liverpool chose Arne Slot
Club admired Dutchman’s ability to harness the potential of a squad, as well as good record on player availability, as they sought a replacement for Jürgen Klopp

Slot’s success in leading Feyenoord to the Dutch Cup this season burnished his credentials

Paul Joyce, Northern Football Correspondent
Monday May 20 2024, 5.30pm, The Times

Arne Slot has a flat that is barely furnished opposite Feyenoord’s De Kuip stadium, though his family home can be found about an hour and a half to the northeast of Rotterdam in Zwolle. It is a destination that has been central to much of his life.

He launched his professional career as an attacking midfielder at FC Zwolle before seeing out his playing days at the newly formed PEC Zwolle after the old club went bankrupt. Slot’s first steps into coaching would also be taken at the Eredivisie side, initially in the youth academy.

More recently, it also provided the setting for his interview with Liverpool over the vacant manager’s job, although the 45-year-old would end up asking almost as many questions as the new sporting director, Richard Hughes.

Not that Slot harboured any doubts about wanting to become Jürgen Klopp’s successor. Indeed, while Xabi Alonso ruled himself out of the running in order to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, Slot’s enthusiasm to sign up for the challenge of steering one of the biggest clubs in the world was one of the qualities that further endeared him to Anfield power brokers.

Rather, it was a desire for detail that led him to seek out answers about the squad he will now inherit and the city that will provide a home from home.

The impression the affable Slot made in that face-to-face meeting spoke to the due diligence Liverpool had already forensically compiled. That analysis, led by the director of research, Will Spearman, and embracing Michael Edwards, the new CEO of Football for Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owner, and Hughes, was heavily data driven.

The model Liverpool adopted informed them of how players have performed before, during and after Slot’s reign at Feyenoord, and also his previous club, AZ Alkmaar, and offered insight into how he harnesses the potential of a squad and improves it.

That is something that appealed greatly given the belief that there is plenty of untapped potential in the pool of talent bequeathed by Klopp despite the end-of-season drop in performances that resulted in a third-place Premier League finish.

Slot is someone who tends to provide a one-on-one presence in the analysis room, and also on the training pitch, and is known to put together his own clips of a player’s display rather than rely on club analysts.

In addition, Liverpool also ran a data check on what was expected of Feyenoord relative to their resources in a Dutch league that has traditionally been dominated by PSV Eindhoven and Ajax.

The numbers revealed a club outperforming their means with a title triumph in 2022-23, only the second this century, followed by Dutch Cup success this term. At Alkmaar, he averaged the highest points per game of any coach in the club’s history. Feyenoord’s record of strong player availability via low injury rates also earned a tick beside his name.

There was an added belief that the transition from Klopp could be straightforward given Slot favours the sort of high-tempo, high-intensity and high-pressing approach that has become ingrained at Liverpool. It is a brand that Hughes and co hope will engage a fanbase who demonstrated during Klopp’s goodbye their own role in building momentum.

With all those elements favourable, background checks were completed. They had started some time before Slot emerged publicly as a leading contender, but the more Liverpool liked about him, the more they kept digging and the more they were convinced he could be the right fit.

Although the names considered by Hughes and Edwards were considerable, it was never the case of a shortlist being whittled down, for example, from 20 to five to one.

The Sporting Lisbon coach, Rúben Amorim, was evaluated internally and showed up well on the data, but he never superseded Slot and was not discussed to the same extent. Had Liverpool wanted the Portuguese, there were no barriers to a deal. It was simply that Slot was the preferred option.

The process appears to have been robust. Whether Slot proves to be the right choice will be determined by results, though he is set to throw himself into the job. A start date for pre-season has already been brought forward by a week to the beginning of July for those who are not at the European Championship or Copa América. That tallies with Slot’s assistant at Feyenoord, Sipke Hulshoff, resigning from his role as No2 with the Holland national team to concentrate fully on relocating to Merseyside.

For Mohamed Salah, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, among others, that will mean about six weeks off, while the timeframe will be considerably shorter for those at major tournaments.

Virgil van Dijk has already stressed the need for downtime, saying: “One thing I do know is we need a good break after our tournament because otherwise we will be in trouble as well going into the season. Hopefully the new manager will look into that.”

Contract discussions with Van Dijk — who said there was “nothing on the table” — Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will proceed as a priority as the trio enter the final year of their existing deals, although there is no suggestion that any of them will leave this summer.

Indeed, the centre back, who once lined up for Groningen against PEC Zwolle and Slot, has vowed to be there for “whatever he needs”.

“I am very curious and have a lot of questions all the time,” Van Dijk said. “He probably knows already but everyone knows our expectations are always huge and it is about managing that in the right way and getting the maximum out of all of our players.”

And that is precisely why Liverpool have hired him.

Nowhere have I said that he's not called the head coach instead of the manager. I've questioned whether there's a difference between the two except for the plaque next to his office door. It means fuck all. I don't know a lot about Arne Slot, but I am 100 percent sure, he's not just coming to Liverpool to be the coach of the team and not bother with signings. It's some weird obsession from our owners that they don't want to have a manager despite there not even being a clear definition of what a manager does these days. Does anyone really think Klopp did the scouting, called up the clubs of possible signings to negotiate a deal, negotiated a deal with the player and then signed all the paperwork to then fax it to the PL? Of course he didn't, but I am not willing to believe that there is any manager/head coach out there worth his salt who'll be happy with sitting around and coaching the team he's given by the club. It's his job on the line. He'll be the first one out of the door, if things aren't going well and any half-decent manager/head coach will want to have input in what players the club might sign. They might not have the last word, but they'll be very much part of the process. So, you might as well just call him the manager and not make people ask questions over a useless title...

The BBC have annouced Arne Slot as the new liverpool manager - see link

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cerryd0xkxzo

Welcome to Liverpool FC Arne !

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot has been confirmed as Liverpool's new manager.

The Reds agreed a compensation deal worth £9.4m with the Dutch club on Friday after the 45-year-old was identified as the man to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Klopp, who had been in charge of Liverpool since October 2015, left the club following their season-finale win against Wolves on Sunday.

Dutchman Slot will officially start at Liverpool on 1 June, subject to a work permit.

Too early to be renaming the club after him.

But its the circle of life and we move on.

No opinion until after his first presser, if it's a damp squib along the lines of "wait and see" , "give me time"  then fuck right of
I want confidence from day one, confidence in the current squad, confidence he can win things and for him to instill in us confidence in him.
and to then follow through
Just like Klopp did

Patient fans like you are a dying breed.

Arrrrne Slot lalalalala! He's going to be class, but even if you're not convinced, Jurgen told us to believe so listen to him.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now. - Jurgen Klopp

Average positions of players at Feyenoord.

Fuck it, we will be using the 2-4-4 next season. It should be fun ...

Christ, remember that Monday evening when Amorim dropped out and we were all going into meltdown thinking Eddie Howe was about to be appointed? Seems a long time ago now. Comfortable, and somewhat pleased, it's Arne when assessing all the other candidates.

I'll say it now - he's the best man for the job in the available market. There's nobody else on the market who would be preferable, and I'm talking about your Nagalsmanns, Tuchels, and god forbid, Mourinho which some belters advocated for.

Only Alonso would have trumped Slot. Outside of Alonso though, I have a feeling we have got the next best thing.
