I used to not mind Newcastle. One club town, passionate support, some great games with LFC in the Keegan managerial era. They also had a very good side and went close to the Prem. My dad went to the ‘74 cup final as a red who stood on the Kop in a previous generation. So Newcastle, not my team, but fair enough, they were doing their thing and they had their stories.
Fast forward to now and I don’t like them. They are allowing themselves to be used by the Saudis. I can understand that the decision was made well above the station of the average fan, but what I’ve not been impressed with is the minor level of protest. It just seems so unbecoming. Buy us a trophy and we’ll turn a blind eye to chopping up journalists and all the rest of it? It’s a shame as I thought Newcastle fans were like us, in their own way. But they’ve embraced it all, and where are they? Mid table.
They will probably win a trophy at some point, but with the tightening of regulations, after the Man City horse has bolted out of the stable, it won’t be easy for them, and I don’t see them dominating any time soon.
But they sold themselves for it. Ugh.
