I can understand not caring much, but actively hoping your national team fails is bizarre to me. Very sad reflection of the way the UK is going now, if you don't hate your country you're practically a UKIP voter in a lot of people's eyes.
It's a complicated situation in the UK yes - I have no loyalty to England though - my passport says 'British' - my upbringing is Liverpudlian - I currently live abroad, as I don't feel welcome in my own country any longer following all the crap around Brexit - and if the Brexit situation causes me to rethink where my company is based and where I pay my taxes, then so be it. There is currently no realistic political party that appears to hold the same values and desired outcomes I do, so where should my loyalty lie?
When you grow up in a disenfranchised diaspora it's perfectly understandable to push back against the status quo that seeks to fuck you over at every turn - and some of that backlash is understandably (note, I don't say :justifiably") directed back towards Engerlund FC and all the fucking hype that surrounds it from mainstream media to crass commercialism to also just not wishing to be tainted by association either. There are many who firmly disassociate themselves from all that malarky and there are perfectly understandable reasons for doing so.
Personally though I don't seek to belittle any Liverpool FC supporters who wish the England team well. That's their prerogative. Nor will I label them as UKIP-voting twats - not all of them are - some of them? Sure. But not all. And there will be thousands of people in Liverpool pubs joining in with the singing and the cheering and probably the inevitable disappointment that goes with serial failure. Fair enough, "Knock yourselves out, lads!" is what I feel - and in some cases they do - and sometimes it turns ugly and they seek to knock others out too - but you get that element everywhere.......
But on a Liverpool FC-supporting forum, I'll freely express my view that Engerlund FC and any knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing fuckwits that buy into the hype can get stuffed
Those who don't fall into that category and still feel a sense of pride in their national team and wish them well, feel free
