Snipped: When seasoned fans aren't interested then what can the OOTERs do?

Thing is is that the seasoned fans, (and I count myself as one) have seen the club changed completely around them, theyre bound to be older and more cynical.

Dont get me wrong. I love a good sing song, but Im not going to be singing for a full 90 minutes at most games. I enjoy my footy and I enjoy watching footy. Just being honest, me and my mate sing, but we wont be starting too many songs nowdays. In saying that, we sit in the Anny Rd mostly, but he feels like me, if you buy a ticket for the Kop you have a duty to be vocal, just by virtue of where you are. We dont go in the Kop because we feel we would be taking a seat off someone who wants to go mental. But I dont have a problem with anyone around me, wherever Im sat, starting up a song. And as Ive said, we usually join in.

The only person Ive ever seen who I was ashamed of at a game was the idiot on the TV programme, One Night in May, who left the Attaturk at half time. 3-0 down and we hadnt even got started.

Ive slated OOTs before but probably because I meant tourist/daytrippers, (Ive been meeting lads from Hull and Leicester for years at the game). As I said earlier, Ive come to realise the game has changed forever, Im a bit more forgiving of people. Doesnt mean I have to like it, but Im getting used to it. If its your first time somewhere youre going to be a bit shy, even if you know what to expect. But in saying that Ive heard very vocal people who are also an embarrassment with their who are ya chants.

Cant have it always I guess.

great character, had a right laugh with him once.....think it was in Dortmund.....fucking mental red
He used to use the Daysbrook in Huyton. I didn't know him well, but some of me mates did. I chatted him to a few times. Nice aul fella, loved the reds.

I knew 3 lads from Kirkby, used to go to all our finals in full, bright red top hat and tails. I'd have loved to have seen them getting called Whoppers.

Fookin shite atmosphere in the Upper Centenary.

 ;D

The atmosphere is shite all around Anfield most of the time lately.  Something to do with hardly winning a fookin home game.  The place is full of nervous tension.  Get a few wins together and the whole place will be far happier and noisier.  It's as simple as that.

A very important point. People comparing what has changed from when the atmosphere was better to what it is now seem to forget this. Even when we havent been competing for the league, we still went to most home games expecting a victory and getting it 9/10 which is pretty far from where we are now. The game has become too clean, too polished in search of a different demographic to the one that went to the game 20 years ago. Some of these changes were needed (how many Asian or Black people do you see at games now comapred to 20 years ago?), but some have gone too far and alienated too many of the people that made the game what it is.
Thinking is overrated.

No-one said it was all their fault, but if you can't see that they form part of the overall problem then perhaps you should bang your head against that wall a bit harder.

Not sure how long you've been going the game mate, but trust me, when the atmosphere was good [and don't get me wrong, it was never brilliant every single week, but it was a damn site better than you'll ever find now] there were very few families on a day out, and even fewer tourists. Its not a coincidence.

I actually think that they younger generation form part of the overall solution. I hope my kids want to stand and shout on the kop as much as I first did in 88'. Also, its funny how the atmosphere is fantastic when I take the family to away games. No-one complains about the atmosphere on those occasions yet my family is right there amongst it, as are a few others.

IMO today's atmosphere relates to;

team performance

loss of standing

proliferation of doom mongering through modern media

All 5 of us will be there for the Newcastle game and, as usual, sure to be shouting our hearts out at every opportunity. Hope you can hear us.  :wave

No, I wont be there mate; I'm fed up of the match now and don't enjoy going any more.

Wasn't having a go at you, but trust me not all of the families behave the way yours do.

Suppose we'll just have to agree to differ on the cause of the current malaise, and hope that it somehow improves. Won't hold me breath though!

Was stood on 305 for the Udinese game and will be practically in the same spot for the Anzhi game. Paying £19 a ticket and getting to stand in a section with a fairly decent atmosphere considering the competition we are playing in is value for money.

There are so many contributing factors to why the atmosphere is so bad that it's almost futile to blame any one cause. I know that personally, standing up gets me more in the mood for singing songs, you can hardly bounce to FOAR while you're sat on your arse can you? So maybe the safe-standing that is used in Germany is a way we can get a bit more atmosphere into the ground; it's a controversial topic but with teams in the SFA pushing for it, as well as Everton (I think?), then maybe that is just around the corner.

I don't think it's the OOTers that are the problem, more the daytrippers and tourists that come to soak up the atmosphere, and why shouldn't they? We've got one of the largest fan bases in the world because of our history and our culture, and we should be glad we can rely on the income from tourists. However, if all of the daytrippers and tourists were designated to sections in the ground like the upper centenary, then they'd be getting a good view of the match, and a good view of the atmosphere they've come to experience. Leaving the Kop end and the Road end to fans that want to have a sing song. An example of this would be the Udinese game, there were a family of about 10 Norwegians in front of me with about 5 or 6 kids on 305; the fathers of the group were joining in the singing for the most part but the kids were having to stand on chairs and looked visibly frustrated at times; that poses the question, why can't families be situated in family enclosures?

I've also noticed that a lot of the people on the Kop don't know the words to some of the best songs, like 'every other saturday' and 'poor scouser tommy' so they're bound to be quieter, and that's the main reason the easy ones are the loud ones. My auld fella told me that he thinks he remembers people passing sheets with the words on around the kop so everyone could join in.

I've probably written this a bit incoherently, I've got a banging headache. But these are just a few thoughts, I've been wrecking my head thinking about ways to improve the atmosphere but it's not gonna happen over night. A steady improvement regards to results, as well as a bit more careful planning from the club and a concerted effort from the people going the match would see us have an atmosphere to be proud of again, unfortunately, I can't see that happening for quite some time.

Failing that, a few pints before the game for every man, woman and child would soon see the lungs functioning a bit better!  :P

Completely agree with that. When I first started taking my daughter in 08/09 she was more excited by the singing, passing the banner over her head and the general buzz of the crowd than the actual football. She's grown to understand and appreciate that now but without the original Kop 'education' I wonder if she would have been so instantly captivated as she was.

Of course she was lucky (or unlucky depending on how you view it) to start going to the game during our best season for years.

It's not just us, it's footall that's fucked up. It's progressivley getting more and more bitter and classless. Recently went to El Classico and there was absolutley no problems in or around the ground. There was a Madrid fan sat a few rows in front and no one said a word to him other than smiling at him when Barca scored. In almost every sense Spanish football is better than the current state of English football.

You wouldn't have said that the other year when you had cars burning and buses attacked in south Madrid when Rayo Vallecano played Real Betis.

It's all really what you chose to focus on, but having lived in Spain and been to matches (Atletico, Real, Rayo) I can agree that it's generally a better atmosphere.

It gets rowdy in Spain when clubs meet with different political roots. When the socialist clubs (Rayo, Sevilla and such) meet the right wing clubs (Real Madrid, Real Betis) it can get pretty ugly. In England it's more foul though. In Spain you'd never hear the shit that is sung in England involving tragedies and racist accusations.
What has the universe got to do with it? You're here in Brooklyn! Brooklyn is not expanding!

Not to mention the shite we've been put through in the last 5 years with the 2 yank sharks, Rafa assassination, owlman fiasco and Dalglish dismissal. Can anyone honestly say
that they haven't lost something over that time. You could look at it the other way and be amazed that we're still getting full houses and drowning out home teams when we go away.
But of course we are Liverpool F.C. and by force of will we'll turn it round and the atmosphere will follow.

Worst start to a season for 100 years?

The crap going on outside of the pitch for the past few years as said above.

Least goals in a season for most of our lifetimes.

Least wins in a season for most of our lifetimes.

Lowest league position for most of our lifetimes.

No home win this season.

Massive transfer fees spent on not good enough players.

Negativity goes on and on and on

As the man above says, that we still sell-out 40,000 plus every home game is mighty impressive with all the shite that's gone on.  Now to get that 40,000 plus singing and dancing ain't gonna happen without some success on the pitch.

Most of every home game's attendance are used to success, glory, goals and wins.  It will come back, every faith in Rodgers to do just that, and when it does it will be magical.....just like the old days......noise and all

Sorry but I don't buy that. It shouldn't matter if we're not performing as well as we should be on and off the pitch, the fans should still be getting behind the team and creating an atmosphere. Sure success helps roll in the good times, but we have to back and support our team at the game throughout.

I'm sure Dortmund fans didn't go quiet when they nearly went bankrupt and had numerous poor finishes in around 2004-07. We shouldn't either. We are a great club, but the atmosphere needs to match that. At the moment, it doesn't.

The fans do get behind the team.  Just not as vociferously as some people want.

Look around the stadium on match day.  The look of anguish on most people's faces is downright depressing.  We all want the same thing.  Signs of recovery - ie scoring goals and winning matches.  I honestly think most people keep quiet instead of letting rip with their anxiety.

Feelgood factor - That's what missing

This is what worries me about the expansion of Anfield or a new stadium.

I used to be a ST holder from 88-96.

I am now back on the waiting list and I'm very hopeful that when we increase by 15,000+ I will get back to regular match-going status.

But if I'm sat in a position like you have descirbed here, my head will implode!

I think we should be forcing the owners to make the Kop a singing only section and make all St holders in that section go through a rigorous audition to test out their capacity to do this and see if they're qualified*

Nowadays the Sky fan occupies Anfield. Or it did when I went to the Wigan home game last season- 'who are ya?' one or two helmets singing 'you don't know what you're doing' when Kenny made a sub, and 'booooooooooooooooooooooo' at the final whistle.

Very true.

However most of our fans have forked out 700 to 800 each for their ST.  They have all been through the good times and as you say, now the shite has hit the fan, just at the time they are paying more for their ticket than ever before.  All adds to the pressure and the anguish.

There's a bloke sits in front of me - must be in his late 50's.  Obvious he is LFC through and through.  To hear him during the game, he is in absolute fookin agony...often think he's gonna have a heart attack.  The day we start roaring back with goals and wins is going to be interesting how he reacts.  I reckon he's gonna be dancing in the aisles.  Can't fookin wait.

Is he a True Red?  Fookin right he is....and he's forked out a good wedge to watch his beloved team at every home game.

You think?

If we had slaughtered Norwich at Anfield instead of Carrow Road, the place would be rocking.  That's what should happen when we play clubs like that.  The fans pay their money, expecting it.  Like the Stoke game, if we don't score early on, the anxiety sets in.  Hence 40,000 worried fans instead of 40,000 rejoicing one's.

It's still the wrong way round though. The fans should be spurring the players on, not the other way around.

We have better players than other teams. Suarez is better than Crouch, Gerrard is better than Whitehead, Agger is better than Woodgate or whoever the fuck plays at the back for Stoke.

So why didn't we win? Confidence. (yes I know theres more to it than that)

If there was 45000 screaming at every pass and every shot and singing for every player that would lift the players up and make them feel like Gods. Instead they have all the pressure of the
"turn-up-at-five-past-three-go-for-a-piss-at-twenty-past-three-go-beat-the-hotdog-queue-at-three-fourty-four-get-back-to-seat-five-minutes-into-the-second-half-ask-someone-who-is-playing-on-the-wing-read-programme-at-seventy-seven-minutes-leave-at-eighty-three-minutes-to-beat-traffic-whilst-making-first-noise-of-fucking-game-either-a-boo-or-declaring-'I've had enough of this shit'"
Whopper fans.

No wonder the team isn't winning.

Agreed.  If we had a mass of constantly vocal supporters on the Kop instead of the smattering we seem to have now we'd have far better results on the pitch.

I know it should mate.  But we are at our lowest point in most of our lifetimes.  Our fans patience as supporters is being tested like never before.

Many refer to HT in Istanbul.  We were 3.0 down to AC Milan in a Champions League final.  To me, it's a massive difference.......a Champions League Final or losing at home to Wigan in the league for example.

One situation is............well here we are getting thrashed by a class side in the final of the elite club competition.............or..............seriously?............are we really losing at home to fookin Wigan Athletic?

sorry Jamie i know your not but that sounds like a fairweather fan, lets look at it another way the fans of this club have seen a dam sight more success than most fans in England if not all, so if they cannot stomach a poor season, would they rather be a wigan fan?
As for fans patience sorry but thats what any fan needs anyway,.

and that's what I'm trying to say Geoff.........................we have all been really lucky to see our team succeed, and succeed like no other.  My view is that the pain we are feeling as supporters is something we are not used to, not even remotely, during our lifetimes.

I think its superb that we have no problem selling 40000 tickets per home game, but I can understand why Anfield is not a cauldron of noise, like it was in years gone by.......when we were exceeding our wildest expectations.

People harp on about Fratton Park or even the Brittania as noisy stadiums.  Portsmouth and Stoke are/were enjoying some of their greatest times as supporters.  Don't ask me why but I went to watch Stoke V Luton in a FA Cup game in the mid-80's.  Stoke were shite.  You could have heard a pin drop.  Funny old thing eh?  and were they fairweather fans there that night or true Stoke?  I'd argue they were true Stoke.  The fairweather one's didn't even bother turning up.

jamieredders, would you also concede the point that many great fans, particularly younger ones, have been priced out of going to games? That, for me, is a big reason for lack of atmosphere and a crying shame.

I think this is a great point some go to Anfield just in the same way as booking a West end show in London, they go for the experience of just being there rather than knowing what their job is.

No doubt All-Seater stadia have an effect.
Prices?  Not sure how much it is for the littluns these days?  But put it this way, when I was a littlun, I spent every penny I could possibly earn on watching the Redmen.....Paperounds and sweeping shop floors.....fook the homework from school.  How many would really want it, like we did in those days?

I see.  Full price.

When I was that age, my dole money was about £23 (Thanks Maggie).  Entrance to the Kop?  Struggling to remember.........maybe £3?.

Dole money now (In similar times of youth unemployment)  £60?  Entrance to the Kop £35?  Yes there's a big difference.

I think Sunday was one of only two visits I have ever made to the upper Annie. I was right above the Stoke rugby fans, and as has been said it wasn't a pleasant experience, apart from the half time beers with my mate! (Nice one Kav!)

Not only was the game rugby v football, but as has been said on numerous occasions here the singing is non-existent. On top of that, the father and son pair in front of me seemed to quite enjoy the away end'd banter.

I used to share a season ticket in the main stand, somewhere just behind the first post and dead close to the away end. I thought that was a bad place to be for the singing ... when you're above them though, it is twice as bad. Thoroughly depressing day.

That said, we have some great looking kids coming through! I though Raheem did amazing to come through a number of challenges, sometimes two Stoke players at a time, with the ball. it was like Lilliput out there at times, but he got stuck in and won challenges he had no right to .. long may that continue.

I love Raheem.  Could possibly become a Liverpool legend.  You can feel the excitement around you every time he gets the ball.  Only special players can do that.  Especially when they aren't old enough to order a pint!

The only thing to do is lock the exits from the stands till full time and put splinters in the seats.
