Anelka demands block PSG spending

Tuesday 9th April 2002

Paris Saint-Germain's efforts to sign on-loan Marseille midfielder Andre Luiz are faltering after it emerged that Nicolas Anelka's wage demands are holding up his transfer to Liverpool.

The capital club are keen to sign Brazilian midfielder Luiz from Tenerife - but Marseille sports director Bernard Tapie has claimed that PSG need to sell players before they can bring in any new faces.

"PSG don't have the money," he said. "Andre Luiz is at Marseille and if he leaves, it won't be to go to PSG because they haven't got enough cash."

PSG have agreed a fee with Liverpool for on-loan forward Anelka of around £17 million. But the France forward's permanent move has hit a stumbling-block as Liverpool have refused to agree to his salary demands.

This impasse puts PSG in a difficult situation. In February, coach Luis Fernandez admitted that Luiz impressed him, saying: "Andre Luiz is a good player, we know him and we are following him."

Fernandez's efforts to build his own squad since returning to the club 18 months ago have been hampered by their financial position. Two years ago, PSG paid £22 million for Anelka and £9 million for Luccin - as both players have left the club on loan deals, PSG have not been reimbursed for those purchases.

But the club cannot buy until some of their departures are finalised. They are set to receive a windfall of cash if three other loan deals are turned into permanent moves this summer, including £3.5 million from Newcastle for Sylvain Distin and £2 million from Derby for defender Pierre Ducrocq.

The club also hope to receive £9 million for Peter Luccin from Celta Vigo but the Spanish side are keen to extend the loan deal.

Luiz said earlier this season: "I still belong to Tenerife and the president called me a few days ago to say there had been some offers for next season. PSG were mentioned."

Liverpool coach Gerard Houllier hinted that the deal to bring Anelka to the club on a full-time contract had hit a major block when he said last week: "We would like to keep him with us but we will see - there is the club, the player and the various interests of everyone."

Anelka himself seemed keen to stay at Anfield. He said last month: "It's been a long time since I enjoyed myself on the pitch. Liverpool are a fantastic club. Here, it is not like in Madrid or Paris. You can go out in the street and not be disturbed by people."

Could be the Mirror stirring it but they said Nico is looking for £60,000 a week + a £1.5m signing on fee which would bring the total contract value to £26.5m over 4 years.

They also suggest that "Les Frères" have reappeared...

Will it stop the transfer? Depends on whether Le Boss can appeal to Anelka's happiness at Anfield so far, but next season there will be one major incentive to behave less in that the World Cup will have been and gone.

Don't know about the Mirror stirring things up..i got this article from onefootball.com

One does wonder about Nic's 'mental' health. Is he another Collymore? Does Nic's brothers stick their nose in? At some point supporters tire of antics that go on with players. I don't think Arsenal or Real supporters want him back. The question is, will or can Houllier get inside Nic's head?

So far we haven't lost anything. But Ged is no fool and won't pay the ransome for Anelka if he feels 6 months to a year on Nic goes petulant again..

Sorry to confuse you - my source came from the Mirror last Saturday.

They describe his terms as "astonishing" and are really quite scathing about him.

"Nicolas Anelka's full-time move to Liverpool is in jeopardy because of his astonishing personal terms.

Gérard Houllier will have to splash out an amazing £26.5m to land the French Striker, who has played a key role in the Reds' Premiership title push since arriving on loan from PSG.

Anelka and his advisers - headed by his brothers - are looking for £60,000 a week for the former Arsenal forward whose career was in decline before Houllier rescued him.

There us an extra signing on fee of around £1.5m to go on top of the £12m transfer fee. And if Anelka gets a four-year contract on the money he is looking for it will be worth £13m in wages alone - making the cost of the deal a staggering £26.5m.

Houllier is determined to keep the striker but may now be put off by his demands. The Frenchman, joint winner with assistant Phil Thompson of the Barclaycard Manager of the Month award, said; "Nicolas has been brilliant and we would like to keep him with us but we will see."

It means Anelka will either have to lower his demands in the next few weeks or Liverpool will start looking elsewhere."

So, like I said, stirring it up. All I can add was I wish I could get £1.5m for signing on...  ::)

If Owen's on the sort of money he's reported to be on then Anelka's wage demands will be met.

1 Trust GH
2 Anelka was with the squad in Leverkusen - that suggests he's reasonably (at least) happy - he could not play, but was there - good squad morale etc
3 This 'exclusive' is the same as all of those papers which had the Anelka loan deal before we secured it. Oh, none did, their stories came AFTER we'd secured it, so if they had no idea then, how do they know so much now?

The papers are hopeless.  One week they quoted GH and Anelka are both keen.  Next week they use the same quotes to say contract talks are stalled.  >:(

GH will make the best decision.  Personally I hope to keep Anelka - he'll be even better when he fully settles in, but he's still associated with a risk factor.  This should mean a premium should be gvien to us on his transfer fees and, preferably, wage demands.

I think 60,000 / week is probably too much and this will unsettle the lads.  It is not like he is on Bosman and we can paid him some of his transfer fees.

Is Owen on 60,000?

Anyway I think Le Boss would sort it out -- I don't think he would give way and unsettle the whole squad.  Cisse is waiting out of the door.
