A draconian suggestion that might improve the quality of discussion.

Through tapatalk i found i could mark a post as spam by holding down on it and selecting 'More' then 'Report'  In the same way as you can report a post as spam, could we add 'knee-jerk' and 'troll' to that list.  Then, if enough people select it, say 10, the poster gets their custom settings edited to read Chimp/Troll, and description to 'Chimp like behaviour exemplified by knee jerk reactions to events' or 'Inflammatory troll-like posting to elicit a reaction' for that post.

This could be accomplished by a generic chimp and troll account that gets assigned to them for that post, for example. You could even have rule that says X number of Chimps or Trolls in a day equalling a temporary ban?  Over multiple days something more lengthy?

There could then be a setting that asks if you want not to see posts labelled as Chimp/Troll when you view discussions.  It could be enabled by default.  This would also, hopefully, make reasoned arguments and descriptive discourse available for readers and posters to enjoy.

This suggestion would make knee-jerking and trolling more difficult and make MOD's lives easier too, I hope.  If the poster disagrees with the label they could raise it with a MOD but trollers and knee-jerkers know what they are doing if they think about it.  I think an added longer term benefit would be that this type of behaviour would be discouraged with more thought put into framing responses and presenting ideas.

This is draconian and could result in unpopular posting being so flagged, but with MODDING offering redress I think this could be mitigated.  I think this would also need an updated rule to the posting rules describing Trolling and Knee-Jerking as unacceptable. I would think, as adjuncts to the thread domination section.  This change could then be updated to all and act going forward.  If people wanted to spend time cleaning up old threads then so be it.
Hoping not to embarrass oneself should not be the ultimate aim when posting

So. How would you do that? What are your bugbears with our moderation? How can we ensure that the cream floats to the top? What are we doing now that is stopping that happening. Fire away.

I think the forum would be better if there was a little more consistency in the warning system. A few months back I was muted for nearly two weeks and to this day I'm still unsure as to what rule I broke. I felt like I'd been treated unfairly at the time and when I was eventually able to post again, I politely asked a few questions about my warning and why it was so severe. The moderator who muted me then posted a very rude response which left my questions unanswered.

I decided against further pursuing my query at the time as I felt I'd only get into more trouble. Regarding the consistency however, I've very recently been on the end of some rather nasty posts; (one user put a serious amount of time and effort into rooting through my post history to try and prove that I'm an Everton fan and also had a go at me because I criticised people who mocked the Munich air disaster). As far as I'm aware the user received no warning for his or her behaviour. I'm aware that I didn't use the 'report' button for these incidents so this could perhaps be considered my fault for failing to report it, but I just feel that after being muted for a fortnight over next to nothing, these types of nasty and 'wummish' posts should be clamped down upon. I'm not trying to get anybody into trouble, I'm merely citing the lack of consistency in the hope that it will improve in the future.

Thanks for reading and providing an opportunity for us to express our thoughts. Regards.

Have you reported those posts? If not, we may well not have seen them.
Its also possible that those users have been warned, it wouldn't be visible.

We are unpaid and deal with issues when we see them.

"He's a Manc" type posts do get very tired very quickly and do tend to get warnings. When we see them.

I don't think we will ever achieve consistency in the way that we moderate, and it would probably be a very dull place if we did succeed in doing that.  Unfortunately to a degree you have to take the rough (me) with the smooth (Mr 6th Benitle-man).

I would also like to think that things had changed since May and if you asked a similar question now you would get a more helpful response from one of us in feedback.

On the subject of other users being warned, some of them may be getting warnings that you don't know about as they are not visible to users.  Also, don't necessarily assume that we have seen them and chosen not to act.  It may be that we have not seen the abuse which is why we ask users to use the Report to Mod function.

Finally, a little plea for understanding.  There are times, such as in the immediate aftermath of the Suarez bite when you were banned, that the site goes into meltdown.  There is every chance that whoever is modding at the time will be fighting a hopeless and losing battle against kneejerk insanity and the running bitchfest that is consuming whichever thread is in overdrive.  We're all human and in an atmosphere like that then summary mutes and warnings are far more likely, as are frustrated replies to feedback enquiries.

We don't want rep whores. The best posts on RAWK are the ones the challenge the orthodoxy. They would be downvoted as people do not agree with the post, but they perform an essential role in challenging the assumptions of the majority.
