Non-Liverpool would have been Matthias Sammer.  And not just cause he's a ginge, either.

As a kid I would love to be Barnes.

If I ever played on my own in my garden (I wasn't a lonely child...honest) I'd be a few players - I'd be Barnes down the left, cross the ball (slowly) and run onto the ball as Aldridge or Rush and bang the ball in.

As a kid i loved Rushie and Walshy, but was a crap striker. Moved to defence and started to be inspired by the likes of Kohler. Also Mark Wright and John Scales were fine defenders wothout really ever hitting the heights at Anfield.

When I first got into football really, Owen was my hero. Loved everything Liverpool and Micheal Owen. I was Micheal Owen in the playground, but as I got older and playing secondary school football, I was a huge Gerrard fan, although I never really tried to be Steven Gerrard, as I was a different player and I played to my strengths.

I was more like a lightening quick Wayne Rooney, in terms of style I suppose. But that was before Wayne had really made a name for himself.

When playing outfield I would be a range of players like Baggio, Careca, Romario, Hagi, Stoichkov, Savecevic, Paul McGrath, Sammer, Rijkaard, Albertini, Casiraghi,

In goal it would be people like Shilton, Ravelli, and Bryan Gunn!  I had some goalie gloves worn by him, hence.

Class A drugs were somewhat frowned upon at school as well. So Rio Ferdinand wasn't really feesable either.

Played Amateur footy until I was 48, and still got the shot......but not the pace !

Wouldn't mind joining one of those over age / senior Leagues ( full of dirty bastards though ! )

if your in Madrid next month a fans match is trying to be arranged, always a damn good crack and you get the odd few mature ones knocking about, one of them is a damn fine goalie  ;)

Bloody he'll didn't think people were posting more than one. Some good choices there too, some real class players there.

Grobbelaar.

A little story.. My grandad retired to north wales and used to be a coach of a youth team as well as a groundsman at Flint Town FC. He also used to live about four houses from Rushy's first house as a Chester pro (Rush lived on 5th Ave and grandparents lived just round the corner on sixth). So they kind of knew each other from local youth football and as neighbours. I used to beg him to let me know when Rushy would be going to his (and his wife's) relatives as he used to take their kids onto the playing fields on a Sunday afternoon to play football. I'd turn up (with loads of other local kids) and beg to be allowed to play with them, decked out as Grobbelaar. Rushy used to end up with 50 a side matches :D This went on til just before he moved to Juve and I never once saw him lose his cool (not making generalisations, but most of the kids were bluenoses...) or turn down a request for an autograph. Lovely guy.
