I'm guessing Mick Rock, as an exhibition of his work opened at Urbis today.

Beat me to it. Especially for her work with The Clash and particularly the most iconic image in rock ever...

I generally like the older stuff when it was raw and there didn't seem to be the prima donna nature of the stars as with today. But Kevin Westenberg isn't bad for a modern day shout.

Too many though are snapshots or like the photographer was scared to upset the big star and get too close or personal. Get in there you feckers!

Oh and i also forgot that its pretty much a 'black and white' only kinda thing. That just sets stuff in stone and makes them timeless, fitting for legends of music. I'll let colour creep in now and again like above, but its a rarity for music photography.

Drobs<------

Nice one for that. Good plug there. Very modern stuff, no doubt commissioned by mags and labels. Problem when its set rigged up like a studio shoot with the lights is you lose the magic of the artist as the person. Plus you often get 10mins to do the shoot with some subjects as the 'PR' people run their schedules. Which is bollocks really as you need to warm the subject into relaxing to get the shot you want.

Thats why i prefer the stand off stuff where you can capture tha artist as the person, you get a natural record of who they are, no sugar coating, just a raw look. PR people hate that though, goes against their idea of managed image!

Yep which is exactly why i love the older stuff and is why on the whole i prefer stuff like... solo artist or band leader/writer alone in a hotel room and the like. Up close and personal is what its all about for me, especially when you get loud brash artists, they were just made for shots like that. The Elvis one from many moons ago aswell, where he was caught in a clinch with a woman - i think it was on the stairs or somewhere 'behind the scenes' like that anyway. Sums the man up perfectly catching him canoodling with a lady friend on the sly.

Like i said, too much of it is snapshot stuff which i hate, it doesnt say anything. And yes the stuff intended for more private use or exhibitions is a million leagues above the editorial stuff, though some of it can be good, its rarely great.
