Sad news. A wholehearted player who has memories that we'd all kill for.

Olympiakos goal and celebration are etched in history.

Never nice to see someone connected with LFC retire through injury.

He had a lot of talent.Pity he had injury problems that made him put on a bit of weight .

Then he had more injuries problems and he couldnt hit his potential.great front man.Hope he has some luck and gets a decent career out of media or coaching!

On a night out in Manchester, told me and my mate a great story about rooming with Biscan and walking in on him stood naked, bold as brass, undistracted, masturbating furiously.  Mellor's a funny guy, great crack.  Good luck to him.

Terrible news, I always appreciated Mellor's poaching skills and committment - when he got a game, he'd always put 110% in and in 2004/5 season he was there for some pivotal games and goal.  His Arsenal strike is unforgettable and his part in the Champions League come back ensured this club went on to success that season.  With the strikers we brought to the club the following Summer meant he'd of struggled to get games but his time at Preston he showed his natural ability of finishing a chance, something we need now

The words "Mellor, lovely cushion header, for Gerrard!" will be forever engrained in my memory, as will his goal against Arsenal. Thanks for the memories Neil, you have a place in footballing history even if you sadly cannot impact the future of football on the pitch anymore.

So unlucky with injuries, even in 2004/05, when we were short of strikers and he got a few goals from autumn to winter, and a short run in the team, only to miss the rest of the season. He was an excellent finisher but lacked that physicality and athleticism to make it here. Best of luck to him.

Am I right that he was one of the players who missed out on a CL winner's medal?
I think he got one of the ones chucked away by the AC Milan players as some of Liverpool's 25 allocated went missing.

Love Neil.  Good luck for the future.

You know, when that Arsenal goal went in I was seconds away from turning to the people I was watching with and saying that if we'd had someone other than Mellor up front we'd have won the game at a canter. Shows what I know. I think people sometimes think late winner and forget just how well we played that day. 1-1 would have been daylight robbery, then up pops Mellor. I always remember thinking as he walked off the pitch his name got sung for the first (and one of the only times probably) time at Anfield, and it was so loud for a good few minutes after the final whistle that it must be amazing to walk into the dressing room afterwards to the sound of your name being sung reverberating around you.

Sad what's happened to his career - think without the constant injuries he'd be playing at a higher level.

Unlucky Neil, thanks for the memories.

This lad should remind those that no matter how well you perform in the reserves and U18s, there has to be something else in you to really succeed at the very top. Mind you, if he had abstained from injury, he might've stayed here for longer; he scored a fair few goals for us.

Such sad news.

I really thought he would push on after breaking through from the reserves,
scored some important goals which are part of the Liverpool FC DNA
