It looks to have survived, this is fucking incredible. As Muniain said it probably isn't what it was, but then maybe as you said it may be an illusion due to the Sun's ferocious heat. The next hour or two will be very interesting!

No word from NASA yet, they were pretty much concrete with their view that it had been destroyed.

precious little has made it through. Hardly surprising when you consider the comet passed barely three times the distance between Earth and the Moon above the sun's surface.

It would help if we had an image of it approaching the sun when it was at the same distance away. Then we could compare the two and see how much it's disintegrated. It does seen to e brightening from the above GIF.
