Something is observed in its orbit, so something survives.... How much?

Possibly just a large dust trail I'd wager at this point.

:D It looks to have survived, this is fucking incredible. As Muniain said it probably isn't what it was, but then maybe as you said it may be an illusion due to the Sun's ferocious heat. The next hour or two will be very interesting!

It would help if we had an image of it approaching the sun when it was at the same distance away. Then we could compare the two and see how much it's disintegrated. It does seen to e brightening from the above GIF.
