Im 40 now - and losing weight is twice as hard

Experience advice like that just makes me want to go and get a kebab - so i can enjoy it.

I don't want to harp on Effes but this makes me think what Kes said is even more important. Ramping up your metabolism could really help, maybe something as simple as having an egg, good complex proteins keep you full for longer (cholesterol is not a concern on your diet), or a handful of nuts, again good protein and fats, for breakfast - then have your apple for a snack mid morning. No more preaching from me, I swear.

He he - I dont mind the preaching mate - we're all trying to help each other

I know such a diet would raise eyebrows of any doctor - and what you recommend is what I intend to do later

Totally agree Alan. I found I needed to retrain my brain, and to do that I had to avoid shite and sweet stuff. After a few weeks you start to get used to it and make healthy meal choices without even thinking about it.
This. Its got to become a way of life, not just a temporary diet, their too hard and once you lose the weight you will just keep yo yo ing and put it all back on again.

To be honest effes its not the healthiest diet as you well know but you will lose weight doing that. So if you do it and dont feel like your gonna drop down dead then go for it.

I don't know why everyone preaching about diets all of a sudden.

I get up - drive to work - sit at a desk for 11 hours - drive hoime and sit down till bedtime

My calorie intake should be taken into account of my calorie expenditure.
(Now I sound like the preacher)
Not having a dig, cos I'm in the same boat. Its only since I moved near to work that I dont have a 2 hour drive each way and now have a 5 min walk. I'm 45 this year, so know how bloody hard it is to lose fat.

From personal experience, I've found if I dont eat enough, I've got tired, cant shit, lost muscle not fat and just ended up being fatter than I was cos I got nuts and end up eating all the bad shite again. The human body is a complex machine, designed to keep us alive. You drop your calorie intake too low, its going to think theres a famine and will slow your metabolism down to keep you alive, until you can find food.

All these low calorie diets dont work, other wise weight watchers and slimming world etc would of gone bust years ago and all the fat birds in work would be slim.

When I lost the most weight, I was living on my own, so could control what was in the cupboards. I would get up about 6 ish, go for a bike ride, then have a 4 egg omelette or big bowl of porridge, then drive to work. I'd have cheese or nuts as a mid morning snack. Go the gym at dinner time and swim, then eat a massive salad, tuna or chicken, and as much salad as I could. Another mid afternoon snack, then drive home. I'd have chicken omellets, or brown rice, veg and chicken for tea and a dessert made from Ricotta cheese, mixed with cocoa powder. Doing this I went from 19st to 15 4lbs in 4 months.

I've got two young kids now and wife who doesn't have weight problems, so its harder for me now, but I need to get sorted, motivated and back to being healthy.

Welcome aboard, some good advice on this thread.

The best snippet I used was not to go on a diet but to change your lifestyle when it comes to food. It gets easier every day, seeing the weight come off, and you feel so much better.

Still beats the hell out of my diet for the last 2 days. Appendix is playing up so I've eaten almost sod all since Monday night! I think the 1L "banana bag" the hospital dripped into me yesterday is the only thing sustaining me!

Been quite good lately. Watched what i've eaten and been jogging a few times as well as playing footy. Spoilt it a bit tonight by having an indian takeaway but suppose you can't completely give up everything. I was 12 stone 9 last week, now 12 stone 7 so it's progress but by August I'd love to be down to just over 11, going to be tough.

I know what you mean. I live with my parents still and I'm not in a position to control what comes in the house. Takeaway is not uncommon during the week either (whilst food in the fridge rots!).

I'm 15 stone and 5 and 6'4''. According to the BMI charts I'm just a bit overweight but I'm looking to do some weight training and jogging.

This. Its got to become a way of life, not just a temporary diet, their too hard and once you lose the weight you will just keep yo yo ing and put it all back on again.

I couldn't agree with this more. Everywhere you look there's someone advertising or endorsing this diet and that diet and 99% of them are simply not sustainable. Yes, you might lose some weight short term by eating nothing but a celery stick three times a day for a month (exaggeration I know, but the point is valid) but you will eventually have to return to some semblence of normality and because you've learnt nothing in terms of diet (in the true sense) and nutrition you will more than likely put it all back on and finish where you started.

In comes another diet and the cycle continues, amid the usual frustration and eventual acceptance that you just can't do it (it's obviously genetic).

You need to learn what kind of foods to be eating, when to be eating and how much to be eating. Tally that knowledge up with an active lifestyle (exercise) and you will lose weight. It's not rocket science.

I read a book once that mentioned that it takes four weeks to create a habit. Do some research, get going, maintain it for four weeks and like others have said, suddenly it becomes second nature.

After weeks of nothing much happening the cycling finally seems to be paying off, I've lost 4 kilos in the last month or so.  Got a 60 mile ride planned for Sat which will take me to 125 miles for the week if I manage it.  Might stop at the occasional country pub for a pint though...

Lost about 5/6 lbs since my little wake-up call last Monday. Been eating healthily, plenty of fruit and veg and have done a couple of 6 or 7 mile walks in the last couple of days. Will try to do another tomorrow then it's back to work where I will be on my feet all day.
It does seem harder to shift the older you get though.

I'm 5'10''. 44. Was 12,4 this time last year. Started cycling more, now at three 20 mile spins a week plus Monday night 5-a-sides. Around 11,9 now. Eating pretty much same amounts as before just a bit more fruit. The exercise gets the mind healthy, things in general , like problems at work are easier to deal with and then the weight starts to come off. You get fitter, and then you get trimmer.  I know if I cut down a bit more on the rubbishy foods I could shift another few pounds quite quickly but I'd rather do it through more exercise, ie cycle same distances quicker [or longer spins], and harder running at the football. Exercise and patience are the key ones for me.

The bonus, obvious with hindsight, is the mental change. It's a huge lift. Anyway, each to their own.

Need to lose around my gut. Cutting out the fizzy drinks, chocolate and crisps. Also cutting down carbs in the evening too, especially bread which I want to knock on the head for a while. Only been a week but at the moment im feeling tired..

Evenings going to stick to fish or chicken with boiled veg. I like a chicken shish here and there. Cant see a lot wrong with that, although I drown it in garlic and chilli sauce.

Need to hit the gym but time is the issue. Love spending every minute with my two kids.

Can you switch to diet fizzy drinks?

Might be worth steaming veg instead of boiling them. I find steaming retains the flavour a lot more than boiling the hell out of them.

I still have the odd chicken kebab from the BBQ with chilli sauce. Just got to stay away from the creamy sauces like garlic and mayo as they're about 99% fat.

Good luck with it.

36, 6ft1, 14 stone.
already play 5 a side.
drink too much beer, so hard to resist, especially in the summer months, dam you beer!
wife is bang into zumba at the moment but it's not for me. time to pound the treadmill and get the old dumbells out.
If i can cut out the beers at home I would only be drinking maybe 5 pints or so, once a week. I only want to lose a stone.
Couple of months do you think? realistic?

Diet fizzy drinks taste like shit so rather have water or cordial.

Im going to try having my last meal before 7pm and stick to healthy carbs during the day.

Dont think I can leave the garlic sauce off the kebab though

I've cut out fizzy drinks completely (diet or otherwise) apart from weekends. Also no crisps or chocolate in the week too. It's boring and I'm feeling hungry a lot of the time but it worked for me last week and I'm still motivated enough to carry it on until I go on holiday. I'll then fall off the wagon spectactularly there but that's what it's all about! I'll just have to knuckle down again when I get back.

I decided enough was enough after a wedding in Liverpool 2 and a half weeks ago.

Met up with an ex army mate who now works as a personal trainer and realised that I've actually become a fat twat. All beer belly even though I hardly drink anymore. But its always been like that for me. Even when I was fit as fuck I was never an Adonis sort of figure. I was doing hilly half marathons in 1:30 ish at the time, playing footy, 5's, squash, normal army pt and I still didnt look like a fitty.

Since I left the army I sort of kept fit for a few years and then just let it go. Now, work is shit, drive in, sit on my arse all day, and drive home again. Cause works shit I tend to find myself going the tea machine all day, and probably having about 2/3 Snickers a day.

After the wedding, things have changed a little. But at 48 next month I'm not sure I have the metabolism anymore to actually lose that much weight. Oh, I stopped smoking over 3 months ago as well, and Ive found that its been easy considering I've been on 10-20 a day for nearly 30 years. No arsing about, just stopped them like that. Decided one morning and finished at lunchtime.

At the moment I'm back in the gym 3 times a week and enjoying it. Doing 3 miles (one at 6mph, one at 7mph and one at 8mph) and I'm going to up that next week to 4 and 5 miles. Then 15 mins on a fatbuster routine on the steppy thing.  I'm not doing any weights which I really need to get into I suppose. But with only an hour and a half or so 3 times a week then its hard to fit that in as well as the cardio stuff.

Foodwise things have changed, and I'm doing probably less than 1200 cals a day now. Eating much better which considering I dont like any (much) veg really is going pretty well.

The only real prob I have is that I dont use all 1200 cals. I just really dont want it. I know about the starvation mode etc, but now I've got on this less calories malarky I just dont seem to be hungry enough to warrant eating more than what I'm having. Even after a workout, in which I'm burning 600ish cals I dont make this back up. probably on average I'll be taking 200 cals less than recommended on a normal night, and 5-600 if Ive been the gym. Drinking loads of water though.

I've lost 10-11 pounds in the last 2 1/2 weeks and feel much much better for it all round. My stomach doesnt seem to be going down much, although my Mrs says it is, but I'm certainly feeling a lot better.

I'm quite convinced that I'll adopt this new lifestyle and hopefully it'll mean a better fitter me. I'm enjoying the discipline of having to go the gym, and staying away from all the shite I used to eat so far has been easy. I know its only 2 1/2 weeks but it just feels normal now to be making stuff for work as opposed to going down the van at dinnertime.

I'm gonna give next week a go and decide whether or not to do the Glasgow half marathon on 4 Sept.

All I can say (and I'm only 2 weeks in so still a bit sproggy) is that if you are thinking about it, then as the adverts says - Just Do It. In the end, what harm is it going to do you?
All the badge kissing in the world don't make up for the fact that they are, frankly, not Liverpool Football Club. It's not their fault. Its just how it is.

Just been eating healthier and cut down on the beer and have lost over 6 kilos since the end of march.

Same here but since May. Was just a touch over 18st as of two and a half weeks ago. Down to 17st 7 now and didn't lose anything until a week and a half ago.

A nice solid (lard) start.
Right which bastards eaten me Tapas?

Bump.

This thread needs to be revived for the good of us fat bastards. Just broken the 13st barrier. Total loss 1st 4lb.

Down at 12'3 now. Don't mind if I don't lose any more. The hard bit is going to be keeping it off...

There are far too many RAWK moderators on here trying to lose weight.

Who will bear the wrath and short temper of carbohydrate deficient mods?
