Thought he looked decent in pre-season too, but never got to play in a more competitive team and was thrust in alongside the other youngsters. So would be interesting seeing him at times throughout the season.

Looked like he was playing a game at the local park. Maybe he will provide part of the answer to our CB issues.

Why did he get subbed on? Did Matip get injured, or just tactical?

Not sure, I am assuming Matip had a problem though nothing has been confirmed yet.

There 5 subs, Klopp used all 5. Quansah had 0 aerial duels in the game because they didnt try and got at him. Matip had 4 aerial duels and won 2, Gomez won all 3 of his.

I thought Gomez and his heading was much improved today.

I think a combo of that and also just putting fresh leg is on(Matip tired from all the defending more likely to make an error). the only other player who Klopp could have even thought about subbing was Mo Salah and he was not doing that.
I kinda want to see Quansah/Gomez start together next game honestly. It probably Matip/Gomez but not opposed to Quansah/Gomez

There was a little couple of minutes spell just before Matip came off where he seemed to be only able to flick the ball and not get his foot through it, might have been an impact knock.

He did excellent vs Wilson and got fouled once too(and another which seemed like was not called)
Gomez biggest weakness defending is normally in the air.

He's an academy player, went on loan last year to Bristol Rovers (managed by Joey Barton) and did very well, played in pre season and didn't look out of place

Love seeing academy talent break through into the first team. Even better when it’s not just a few minutes in a cup game or at the end of a league game that is already won.

Thrown on at 1-0 down away from home and not as an extra centre back but as a replacement in a back four, with no specialist DM in a team that’s a man down.
Rafa Benitez: "I’ll always keep in my heart the good times I’ve had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager."

Klopp said it was because he’d not played 90 minutes for ages and he was tired

Possibly an element of fresh legs too on that side v Gordon as Trent came further in to avoid further issues.

Fewer mitstakes than Billy...much faster and stronger than Rhys and Sepp.

In fairness to Sepp, he looks good too. He just had a bad injury last year.

To make a debut in a tense game like that, in a loud stadium, in a team playing with 10 man and losing 1-0, is something unique. Especially for such an important position like a CB, who are normally eased up by playing RB/LB. And to don't give a sniff to a big forward like Callum Wilson on top of that. He will remember this forever!
