RAWK Letters Draft - Sixth Batch of Group Fixtures
« on: April 6, 2013, 05:42:23 pm »
FresnoBee

With the G. Hagi - Raymond Kopa - G. Best axis supporting Christian Vieri in attack, they would unlock any defence they encounter. Bridging defence and attack are the energetic Tardelli and strong as an ox Dunga that would ensure their defence are well protected, and attack are well supported.

Defence is bolstered by the cynical Ciro Ferrara and rock solid Christian Worn. On their side are well-known Ziege, and captain of Belgium NT and PSV: Eric Gerets. Gerets played at the 1980 European Championship (Finalist), 1982, '86, and '90 World Cups. And in goal is Hans Jacob, Germans NT goalkeeper that featured in 2 World Cups.

vs Whispering Death

The team has been built with a theme of players in similar eras. Van Hanegem and Gerson both displayed their talents in the 1970 and 1974 World Cups, respectively, while the rest of the team has been at their peak more or less in the 90s decade.

I believe there is no need to write anything about Ferdinand, Davids, Zola, Henry or Batistuta, still I will leave these links, to show how high the quality of the goals from the front 3 would be.

Gianfranco Zola : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkJOWuP8VeE

Thierry Henry : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko5jBnTn9hU

Gabriel Batistuta : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te2s3cywAUY

Tassotti was a permanent figure in one of the best defenses of all time, that is the Milan defense under Sacchi, alongside Billy, Baresi and Maldini.
Kohler is one of the best CBs of all time, being a rock for Germany, Juventus and Dortmund over the years, contributing their WC and CL success.
Gerson was the brain behind one of the best sides in a World Cup, that is the Brazil team in 1970.
Van Hanegem was the star in a star studded Dutch Team in the 1974 WC, and displayed his mixture of tenacity and quality on the ball.
Davids was the one man engine of Lippi's all conquering Juventus side.

;D I really admire your bravery, Samie. It's a risk naming who you voted for, as others would feel bitter and votes against you. But you stick to your principle in all these drafts.

Now I can feel indifferent whether you vote for me or not  :wave

I must say it's crminal to see AWWUC's side potentially knocked out here. Other than Finnan who was a bit of an odd pick, though I can see the logic in trying to build a tough old-fashioned defence (I'd have gone for Janes and Fillol instead), it's a beautiful side. That front four is, I believe what the kids are calling, 'pure sex'. Backed by a powerful yet skilled midfield and a defence that will give very away little and make sure the opposition feels it too.

No criticism on Saint's team of course. Another brilliant one. But I dare say if the managers were switched here, we'd see quite a different outcome.

The other matches seem rightfully close. I'd take Fresno's side over Aldo's. Although my first thoughts were Henry and Batigol 'OMG WTF YES', I was quickly sobered by Wiese in goal and Jankulovski at left back (neither worthy of an all-time draft). Whilst in all truth I'm not sure that front two would actually work as a pairing. Fresno on the other hand has Hagi and Best (ouch) who'd run any defense ragged, man mountain Vieri through the middle, all supported by one of Madrid's great playmakers in Kopa, and backed by the brutal pairing of Dunga and Tardelli in the middle. It makes for a harmonious and extremely satisfying side.

In the second match I voted for Samie. Maybe in part because I felt he deserved it for his sterling Roman legion testudo side (nice one, Aristotle). But I do also feel slightly aggrieved not to see Lethal's side built around his greatest player - Zizou. While that midfield is just a pushover really. Every great side needs a ball winner and neither Pep or Veron quite satisfy that for me.

Dilks and Crix is a bloody tough one. Each side seems to neutralize the others strengths. Thuram on Gento, Zanetti on Johnstone, Bonhof on Gazza, Figueroa on Del Piero. I'm not mad on either sides midfield, which is where I usually decide these tough match-ups. So it just comes down to personal preference and I like the bravery in Crix's picks that little bit more. Big kudos for picking the legendary mighty Magyar Hidegkuti over someone more well known. Shame those guys always get overlooked in drafts - understandably so with the lack of available footage though.

I went for Fresno, Lethal, Dlikington and AWWYC

Can only echo the thoughts that its a bit odd AWWYC is losing this one....

Its a tricky one. Isn't it? AWWYC possibly has a better side if we just go by purely their abilities but then there will always be an issue when you pick the likes of Zizinho, Kempes and Ray Wilson etc. They are never going to get judged by their full ability as they're not "famous" names. I wouldn't have picked certain players I did if this was purely based on ability. But, since this was a voting draft, I had to pick the 'famous' ones instead of best ones.

Kempes is no more obscure than Valderrama, and has done more in the game. Nigel Winterburn automatically cancels out people not knowing Wilson and Barnes and van Basten completely trump Giggs and  Drogba. Hughes and Thompson > Silva and Hansen.

I would say he is. Valderrama is a more famous name thanks to his hair. And oh, He was bloody good player on his day. But, If you really feel that many will rate Kempes as much as they deserve then you are wrong. Van Basten and Barnes are better than Drogba and Giggs. No debates regarding that. Regarding Wilson, I doubt many would have even heard about his name. Only few of us who have having been playing drafts would know about him and rate him. At least people will remember Winterburn or lets see a Dixon because they were quite solid and did well in that Arsenal side of nineties. They were nothing special but were generally quite solid and reliable.

Indeed. I'm not saying you've got a bad side at all, of course. In fact, yours, KingLuis', and Fresno's are my tips to win this one. But yes, on pure ability, AWWUC had the better side. But we all know drafting isn't all about picking the best players. And you're always one of the best when it comes down to picking the "right" players. Although I do think AWWUC's status on here has gone against him at some level.

On the Valderrama vs Kempes argument. Just an example of the popularity/knowledge difference. Search "Mario Kempes" on Youtube and the video with the most hits is 40k. Do the same with "Valderrama" and you'll find one with over 1.9 million views. Yep, whether he should be or not, the big haired one is more famous.
