Alaves watch - back in La Liga
« on: May 22, 2006, 03:55:36 pm »
Alaves is not actually a place. They are a team based in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Alava is one of the three Basque provinces.

They were in the Spanish Fourth Division only 11 years ago, and the UEFA Cup final season was there first European campaign in their 80-year history. However 5 years on from that memorable 5-4 thriller in Dortmond, Alaves are no longer the same team they once were.

While Liverpool go from strength to strangth with Champions League and FA Cup wins, Alaves have now been relegated from La Liga after finishing in 18th position.

Indeed you are right - they were relegated the year i lived in Spain too!

I'm more bothered by Malaga's relegation :(

I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but I’ve always had a soft spot for them after obvious events. I tend to check up on them from time to time.

It’s nice to see they are back in La Liga, although they lost this past weekend.

Contra, the Romanian was a good player too.

I recall a raucous session with Alaves fans in a restaurant in Dortmund. I have always meant to take a trip to Spain to see them play. Never have managed it.
