Sorry nidge, that was actually a serious question, read the apple support forums if you don't believe me.

Oh, I'd believe it OK.

Apple software DOES seem to clash with windows terribly for some (no for all, though - more will say it works fine)

No idea why it is, though the devil in me suspects / hopes they're doing it on purpose...

An N95 is free here on most 18 month contracts and a fair few 12 month ones from what I've seen, obviously the iPhone ain't out yet but its expensive enough in the US even with a contract subsidy

Yeah, the US is completely different to the UK in respects to phones apparently. I would wait for the UK deals - bet it's nowhere even close to what the states are costing. I think the specs and the cost will be completely different for this market - a different business model all together.

They also don't do EDGE. So it's a choice between gprs and g3.

If they choose to not go with g3 - there just isn't any point in the features of the phone.

That's my upgrade next year sorted.

I do love my Sony Ericsson, but it'll be traded in for a much improved UK spec iPhone when the time comes.

O2 have apparently won the contract for the UK, so that's them boycotted.

O2 'to get iPhone contract in UK'

Half a million phones were sold on the first weekend in the US

iPhone in action
Mobile phone operator O2 is reported to have won the sought-after deal to sell Apple's iPhone in the UK.
Press reports said that O2 is set to sign an exclusive contract shortly and should have the new phones on sale in time for Christmas.

A spokesman for O2, which is owned by Spain's Telefonica, declined to comment on the reports.

More than 500,000 iPhones were sold in the first weekend in the US by AT&T, which has exclusive rights there.

Vodafone had previously been tipped as the likely winner of the contract.

The agreement with O2 is reported to include Apple receiving a continuing share of the revenue generated for the network operator.

The handsets are expected to be sold for about £300 and O2 will be hoping that the lure of the fashionable phone is enough to win customers from rival networks.

:D

I cancelled Vodafone two days after they sponsored Man U.

It was actually because reception had gone to fuck in my area (a transmitter had blown down and just been removed rather than replaced) but I did enjoy ringing them up and saying

"hello, I'd like to cancel my contract"
"can I ask why"
"yes. because of your companies sponsorship of Man United"

the best of it is, her response was

"OK, fair enough,  we've actually had a lot of cancellations because of that in the last two days"

Nor will you have to.

For example, with O2, a W880i costs £230.

https://shop.o2.co.uk/phones

Free on all tarrifs, though...

The iPhone will be the same - it'll have a quoted price, be about £30 to buy on tarrifs below £20pm, and free on anything over it.

wacko, no doubt they had to do a lot of the OS from scratch but think of it like  this, its an OEM OS, an OEM version of Windows Vista can be had legit for £60

no way is this as complicated as Vista, i would say its probably 1/10th of the coding thats in vista at best, therefore the OS should cost us £6 at most

:)

also consider the relative cheapness of windows mobile 6 phones, its a new OS
Of course it's not as complicated as Vista, but I don't really see your point. The OS is basically included for free in any cost estimates you see for the iPhone because you can't put a price on software a company doesn't sell. Apple has always been a hardware company and Microsoft a software company, so it's pointless to compare their products directly in price terms except the Zune and iPod.

I dare say the Win Mobile 6 phones are a good deal cheaper in terms of retail price, but if you look at what's happened during the US launch, you'll see that the iPhone has come with significantly cheaper data plans than otherwise or previously available and they work out far cheaper over the course of a contract than other phone packages.

Of course, it remains to be seen what they'll do over here in Europe, but they're certainly priced competitively as a package in the US.

Thats pretty much why I'll stay with them as well in spite of threatening to leave every year when I'm upgrading ;)

In the US I believe its only available on a long term deal so I suspect its a hefty operator subsidy applied, the downside is that the battery isn't user replaceable and at the end of that long term deal performance mightn't be too impressive

I'm not sure what you mean, Phil.

In the US it's $499 for the 4GB model, plus a minimum of $60 a month on a two year plan. Unless the US phone market's an utter bastard, I can't see them giving you an iPhone for free for taking out a £30 a month plan here.

I think so, but that's generally the case, and in the US, phones are always very expensive, even when bought with a long term contract.

For example, with AT&T, the SE 300i, with a frankly laughable 20mb memory, VGA camera with 4x digital zoom etc, costs $179.99 with a 2 year contract, no matter what contract.

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?device=Sony+Ericsson+W300i&q_sku=sku70016

a Motorola KRZR is $199.99...

All of these are low end free phones over here.

The UK price will clearly be considerably less than the US one.

With AT&T a blackberry pearl is $249.99 even with a high business tarriff. In the UK, they're widely available free on a £27pm tarriff (with 150 min anytime)

With AT&T a blackberry 8800 is $349.99 even with a high business tarriff. In the UK, they're widely available free on a £35pm tarriff (with 450 min anytime)

And even if the iPhone ends up with the higher end stuff currently available, it's got to be worth £29.99 of anyones money as an upgrade / new contract, hasn't it?

Worse still its iTunes 7.3, which has a nice habit of deleting your music library on some people's computers when you "upgrade"
