Nothing physical has shown up. Bit baffled at the moment. The owner said Paul Townend never felt the horse was travelling

Any tips for Lingfield on New Years Eve anyone? We've made a bit of a family thing going there on NYE for the last few years, all a bit of fun but any tips would be welcomed!

Lost at the bottom of the last page! Anyone betting on Lingfield tomorrow?

Yep, hope some of you got on that Cheltenham Ante-Post at 8/1 before the race. I got 4/1 afterwards, and even that is coming in to 3/1 - 5/2 now.
It's a good time to be thinking about Cheltenham Ante-Post now actually, quite a few of the bookies have gone NRNB.

I take the other view. They have gone NRNB due to the amount of horses who are off -form, injured and general uncertainty on participants and i reckon its got them some interest and good PR which justifies NRNB, then they cut the prices. I reckon best value will be had at declaration stage in many cases, that said the above example looks good at the minute.

Fair point. Maybe a bit of the value has already gone too. Some interesting mad shouts though. Tom Stanley made a case for Blaklion in the gold cup for instance (probably won't run in it, but if he does I can't see him going off at 25/1).

Blaklion runs in the Gold Cup. It’s his Grand National prep race. Every chance he runs on to place and not a bad shout at 25s at all.

I knew he was entered, but thought it was among the options rather than certain.

Talking of Twiston-Davies - I'm looking to oppose the 2015, 2016, 2017 winner of the Champion Hurdle Trial this weekend - The New One. Ch'Tibello looked good at 4/1, but I missed it and it's now come into to 5/2, which is a bit rubbish. Not so sure on the others (Clyne?).

Any other thoughts on Haydock's card on Saturday? I also have Tintern Theatre (7/1) for the Peter Marsh Handicap Chase (also maybe fancy him for Cheltenham).

I’ve heard he goes there as his prep, can’t remember where. I avoid the jumps at this time of year, so many horses being aimed at Cheltenham and these races are just preps. Add to that at Haydock the ground will be heavy and it’s the heaviest ground in the country and there will likely be many results the form book will never explain!

It was absolutely bottomless there over Christmas/New Year. Horses really struggling to get home.

Tellwright reckons it will be on, possible precautionary inspection Saturday morning, basically saying its up to the jocks to get them round.

I couldn't believe it was on actually, especially with the rain in the morning too.

It was good value at 5/1, coming into 15/8 on the day, but soundly beaten by The New One in the end. Tintern Theatre didn't impress at 13/2.

Also saw this, which might be of interest to some, though the P/L is a bit pointless because its skewed by the total that fit the category:

Themanfrom Minella tomorrow in the Eider at Newcastle. Nice weight, nice jumper, stays all day, owners had two entered but left this one in, good claimer taking an extra 5lb off and won on him before. Taken 18/1 and think that’ll shorten a fair bit tomorrow morning.

Also taking a stab at Theatre Guide at 16/1 to win the 3:35 at Kempton tomorrow. Has won this before ans was 3rd last season. He’s dropped slightly in the weights and I think he’s been aimed at this one for the season.

Only come in to 16/1 so far, but with 5 places on offer in some places, could be a good EW shout. This race was down as one to avoid for me though.

I went for another Theatre pick in the 15:35 at Kempton, Tintern Theatre at 10/1. Was no good at Haydock last time (on 20th Jan) when I was there and backed, but it was some of the worst conditions I have ever seen so means nothing in my view. The run previous to that was at Kempton with a win at this distance so worth another go I thought.

For anyone using exchanges, Matchbook have gone 0% commission on all horse racing until 19th March - definitely worth a look.

Have never seen a race like it for possible confusion, bet at least a few people will put a bet on the wrong horse. Unbelievable to have 3 horses with the word Theatre in the same race!

Lazy naming, just based on the same sire.

Agreed they did say it dries quickly for later in the week of there is not much more rain.
Also a bit disappointed ITV aren't covering all the races especially giving that's all they the racing programme have been talking about for weeks, surely they could have put the last 2 each day on ITV4?

Will be an absolute classic if they're all even close to top form. Douvan for me is 5/6 lengths better than Altior and Min. Altior could bounce, Min is obviously second choice, I think I'm going to bet Douvan as there's absolutely no way the overly cautious Mullins sends him there unless he's bang ready.

I'll kick us off for tomorrow lads:

1:30 - First Flow - Been faultless this season in the mud so the weather has been a big bonus for him. He has an extremely exaggerated knee action which would indicate to me the softer the better as far as he's concerned. I was extremely taken with him last time out at Haydock and he galloped right through the line, Haydock is the heaviest ground in the country so he should relish conditions.

1:30 - Claimantakinforgan - 4th in the Champion Bumper last season, he took the wide route the whole way and came home really strongly. I think he would prefer the ground a little better than it is likely to be. He was disappointing last time at Musselburgh, however he was seriously keen and the track wouldn't have suited. Previous time at Ascot was a really strong performance and again that was without a good gallop, I think the likely fast pace will really suit tomorrow and we already know he acts well at Cheltenham.

2:50 - Coo Star Sivola - Has run two massive races at the Festival in the past. Stepped up to 3 miles last time out on soft ground and absolutely bolted up. Lizzie Kelly taking three off will be huge for him and I think this test will really suit.

2:50 - Vintage Clouds - One of my strong fancies for the Grand National if he takes up his entry and he was running a huge race in last season's renewal before falling to from home. I think the ground this season will be a big help to him, the slightly slower pace should really suit this galloper. This is a race that really suits National sorts and that's exactly what I think he is.

3:30 - Faugheen - I'm putting my faith in Mullins with this one. He's the best horse in the race at his best, his first start this season was relentless and if he's back to that he'll take all the beating here. I fully expect Buveur D'air to  win and he's a very worthy fav, but this ground can throw up the unexpected at Cheltenham. Buveur is a speed horse and this ground won't fully suit. Faugheen is an out and out galloper and if he's at his best, he could well gallop this lot into the ground, well worth the punt at this price. The addition of cheekpieces isn't something I'm overly keen on, however Mullins is a genius with first time headgear so it may well bring about some improvement.

4:50 - Mossback - Same jockey, trainer, owner as last season's winner Tiger Roll and I can see them pulling it off again. I'm a big fan of Lisa O'Neill and am happy to have her on side here in this amateurs race. Mossback has been running at a very high level this season and staying on strongly on heavy ground which indicates the step up to 4 miles should really really suit him. He will also handle the ground. He's bred to be a Grand National type and chased the highly talented Monbeg Notorious home last time out who'd previously won what looked a decent Thyestes by 11 lengths, that form is more than good enough for me to take a big interest here.

4:50 - Rathvinden - At his best he's in a different league to most of these. He was only 5 lengths behind Faugheen in his Neptune win which is phenomenal Festival form. He really handles heavy ground and has only been tried over 3 miles twice so is highly unexposed as a stayer which means this trip could bring about huge improvement. He won his first trip over three miles and was brought down in the next when travelling well. I think he goes very close.

5:30 - Barney Dwan - I've been all over this lad for a while for this. He was second off the same mark to Presenting Percy in the Pertemps last season. Presenting Percy is now fav for the RSA on Wednesday so I think this fella is chucked in at the weights. He's been aimed here all season, stays further and will handle the ground. I'd be disappointed if he wasn't bang there at the finish.

5:30 - Testify - Wasn't a horse that I had on my radar for this until the ground turned. I think this fella wants 3 miles but the stiff test on heavy ground tomorrow should be right up his street. I actually thought he'd go close in an RSA so have to take my chance on him in a handicap at the prices.

Was looking at the heavy ground form last night. 2 standouts which have both won on the bog known as haydock:

Yala Enki - 14/1
Testify.- 9/1

Will be having an investment on both  while at reasonable odds

Good picks OWLYBH.

For me:

1:30
My 4/1 on Getabird is looking quite nice now (though not so much my little nibble on Sharjah at 11/1 ante-post)

14:10
Took Footpad at 13/10 the other day. Was worried it might have drifted out, but looks solid so far - though the drift might still happen.

14:50
2:50 - Coo Star Sivola - Has run two massive races at the Festival in the past. Stepped up to 3 miles last time out on soft ground and absolutely bolted up. Lizzie Kelly taking three off will be huge for him and I think this test will really suit.

Yes, this all day long. At 5/1, with 5 places, can't see any reason not to be backing this EW.

15:30
3:30 - Faugheen - I'm putting my faith in Mullins with this one. He's the best horse in the race at his best, his first start this season was relentless and if he's back to that he'll take all the beating here. I fully expect Buveur D'air to  win and he's a very worthy fav, but this ground can throw up the unexpected at Cheltenham. Buveur is a speed horse and this ground won't fully suit. Agree Buveur is worth fav and also don't see value in it. However, I go the other way on the unpredictable Faugheen and might lay him placing. There are a few at big big prices that look tempting (Mick Jazz?).

Apple's Jade wins this comfortably for me, but did have a bite on this at 7/10.

One of the most interesting races of the day. Expect RAWK to go heavy on Jury Duty, not least due to JJ Codd, but agree good cases could be made for Rathvinden and Mossback. I should have backed something earlier at a bigger price, as they are all quite short for me now in this sort of race.

17:30
5:30 - Barney Dwan - I've been all over this lad for a while for this. He was second off the same mark to Presenting Percy in the Pertemps last season. Presenting Percy is now fav for the RSA on Wednesday so I think this fella is chucked in at the weights. He's been aimed here all season, stays further and will handle the ground. I'd be disappointed if he wasn't bang there at the finish.
Yep, the worst kept secret in racing maybe! Really like his chances, though De Plotting Shed should also be considered.

Good picks OWLYBH.

For me:

1:30
My 4/1 on Getabird is looking quite nice now (though not so much my little nibble on Sharjah at 11/1 ante-post)

I still fancy Sharjah mate. Depsite the conditions I reckon it will still get a good run on a fresh track. Took 20/1 EW earlier

Also done Western Ryder at 28/1.  Greatrex reckons it will be the forgotten horse in this race and he's on blistering form.
