Yeah you can, providing the handset is unlocked or on the same network as your sim
Yeah both are on O2. Thanks mate.

Make sure they disable Find My iPhone (if they have it enabled) before they give it to you too.

Another query.

When I get the 6S I mentioned earlier I'm gonna start clean with nothing on it. Before then I'd like to transfer as much as possible from my iPhone to my Mac. I don't mean backing up so I can do a restore later, nor do I particularly want to use iCloud. I want to be able to actually use my Mac to view what I'm taking off my iPhone, just to keep it as an archive. I've had this phone for a long time and there's some conversations and stuff on it that has huge sentimental value.

Messages - If possible I'd like to transfer all these to Mac, so I can scroll through all my past messages
Whatsapp - Essentially the same as above
Photos - Pretty sure you can just use the Photos app on Mac for this right?
Voicemail - Not sure if it will be possible to transfer these?

Does any of this sound possible?

On whatsapp if you click the persons name when you're viewing the messages you can download the chat and email it yourself.

Photos you can do via Photos on Mac.

May want to search Google about saving voicemails as sound clips. Probably possible somehow. Not sure these are saved on the phone anyway are they so if keeping the sim would still have access.

Messages I'm not too sure about, you'd think there would be a way similar to Whatsapp but can't seem to find the option.

Thanks for the Whatsapp tip. I was hoping it'd be possible to view chats in the actual layout not just raw text, but thinking about it that's asking a lot.

You're right I think Photos is straightforward. I'll look into the other two.

Cheers pal.

With WhatsApp from within the app just backup to the cloud. When you get a new phone and download WhatsApp you'll have the option to restore your chats.

On the mac all messages should be saved in the messages app but you won't be blow to get them back on your phone unless you backup the whole phone I believe.

Photos would just automatically sync to your mac if you're using iCloud anyway so they should be on your mac already.

As long as you keep your number voicemail should carry over. I picked up the 7 last week and set as new, and have voicemails from 8th sept showing.

They should back up automatically then if you have your iMessage synced with your mac.
WhatsApp is a different story though. I dont think you can view them elsewhere. As the messages are stored on your device, not on a server.

Called my network provider and even they're convinced Apple will bring out the IPhone 8 next year which is going to be totally different to the 6 & 7 ( in either June or September)

They said I might as go sim only for 12 months but this allows me to change my handset within that period.

If you've the 6 I see no point getting yourself involved in a 24 months contract at this stage.

I've upgraded from the 6 to the 7 Plus (not that I've actually received my phone yet) but it comes with the option of upgrading for 'free' - i.e. no penalty - after 12 months. So if the iPhone 8 blows me away, I'll probably upgrade after a year.

The thing I would say to counter that, is that the bloke on the end of a mobile provider helpline will be as in the dark about any future tech from Apple as we are. He'll just be an enthusiast who reads the same guff that we do.

True but everything does point to an all singing all dancing new iPhone 8 next summer.

However, it it doesn't then I will just do the sim only until it's released.

Yeah was offered that but one of the terms of that is you have to give them back the iPhone7 or 7+ when the 8 comes out and they wanted to charge me an extra £20 per month for the year for the 7. So thinking about I wouldn't own the iPhone 7.

The sim only way I am paying £20 less on my line rental and I get more data plus if the iPhone 8 comes out at any point I can then discuss a new fixed contract.

Aye the ear speaker is now a full on speaker too, so don't just come from the bottom which will be a big difference.

Son's 5C is stuck in recovery mode. Unfortunately he never backed up to the cloud (he was told) and when trying to fix by connecting to itunes, it tries to update the OS but isn't enough memory left to do that.

Have looked on the internet but all the so called free software that will take it out of recovery mode need you to pay for the full version to do this (£30ish). Has anyone ever paid for this type of software and did it work.

Sods law he's due an upgrade in a couple of weeks so would have backed up then

Download the latest iOS ispw and then connect the phone to iTunes in recovery mode. Shift click the update button and you'll have the option of choosing the ispw. This should complete a fresh install of iOS for him.

Although his actual phone might not be backed up - contacts, photos, passwords etc should be backed up automatically.

Ended up getting hold of the new 7 middle of last week. Got the Matt black one. Looks amazing. Such a quick phone as well. The home button is brilliant, it's actually a bit surprising when you remember it's not a physical button. I even turned it off once to make sure!

Happy with it so far, good upgrade to the 5S.

I am having a bit of a nightmare with my iPhone 6S.

I have about 20 years of music on a HDD, most ripped from CDs and a lot purchased directly from iTunes over the years.

About 4 weeks ago, I noticed all my music was gone. I hadn't done any software updates and I couldn't figure it out. I was starting to think that maybe it was 'hidden', so went through the settings but I couldn't find anything relevant - had a Google too but couldn't suss it out. The used storage on my phone had decreased and in the 'about' settings, it stated 'Songs: 0', so I knew they were gone.

I downloaded them all again and everything seemed back to normal.

This morning, I've gone to listen to some podcasts on the train, podcasts I had downloaded yesterday morning and they were all 'offline' and unavailable for playback without an internet connection. When I downloaded them yesterday, I went into the podcasts app, refreshed and they all started downloading, and I left it at that, so I thought something must have gone wrong there. I then went to listen to some music instead and it's all gone too... same situation again - used storage has decreased and songs showing as none.

I had a look at the podcast settings and I did have it set to delete a podcast after it had been listened to, which I have since changed. However, it has deleted everything - including stuff I hadn't listened to.

I'm on 9.3.2, I haven't upgraded to 9.3.3 but I might do that now. I don't have Apple Music either. Storage on the device is fine - I had about 20GB free when I had the music and podcasts on there.

Does anyone have a clue what is happening? :/

Happened again... Just randomly deletes my whole music library on the phone - very fucking annoying.

I thought I had it narrowed down, to connecting my iPhone to my work computer and maybe that had caused the wipe, but since the last time I have stuck to charging it via USB plug only.

Absolute dicks!

I can't seem to find a reasonable explanation as to why this has happened. Again.

I am not even signed into Apple Music, I don't want to be - I don't need the facility.

I just want to have all of my music on my phone available to play offline.

The whole rigmarole of going through buggy itunes and a computer to put music on your phone amuses me. It should not be any more complicated than simple select copy and paste. Have your music in an external drive? Simply use an OTG cable to directly access the hard drive from your phone and copy whatever files you want on to your internal memory... Simples.. that is IF your device is USB OTG capable...

Ios doesnt support OTG does it? For example, i can use my 7 year old cordless Logitech Rumblepad 2 with any of my android devices and use it to play controller supported games. I can plug in a proper mouse too, using the OTG cable.

Never understood WHY Apple want to deliberately gimp hardware capabilities through the OS. Case in point, a jailbroken iphone is much more capable. Simple things like USB otg, blutooth sharing, file management and interfacing have been omitted deliberately.

I guess the reality is that a vast majority of smartphone users do not care less about these missing features, apart from your basic calling/texting/browsing/networking stuff. 'power users' are loud on the interwebs but actually represent a tiny proportion of smartphone users.
