    • Restaurant Name:
    The Restaurant Bar and Grill

    • Location
    Brunswick Street
Map Here

  • Link to their website
http://www.therestaurantbarandgrill.co.uk/liverpool.html

  • How many went
8 People

  • What was [roughly] ordered
8 starters, and 8 mains. [2 of the starters were platters for 2 to share.] Also 3 plates of olives, and 3 plates of bread. 2 bottles of red wine and 3 bottles of Rose

  • Review of the Food
Everyone was made up with the food. The portions are layed out beautifully and presented in top quality fashion. Sizes may at first seem small, but when you finish - you realise its more than enough. We're often guilty of over eating I guess....and these are just right - especially if your drinking too.

  • Review of the venue
Lovely, swanky, modern feel. Great old building with a modern interior. Bar in the centre of the place, with glass deisplays containing wine and champagnes that seperate the eating area from the bar. It can be full of "look at me" types. But it is a great dining experience.

  • Would you go again?
Definately.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Have done

  • Price Paid
Worked out about £40 per person for all the food and wine, and we had a bar tab that had about 12-15 pints on it and a couple of gin and tonics.

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
Not that Im aware of. Doesnt seem the place that would do either.

  • Overall score out of 10
A solid 8.

  • Restaurant Name:
Savina

  • Location
Duke Street, City. Map Here

  • Link to their website
http://www.savinarestaurant.co.uk/default.htm

  • How many went
2 People.

  • What was [roughly] ordered
A starter and a main each. A bottle of red, 2 bottles of lager and 2 gin and tonics.

  • Review of the Food
Mexican cuisine. Well cooked, and layed out with great appeal. First time I came here I had the steak and it was cooked superbly. Second time I had something more Mexican, and as you would expect from a Mexican - it was top draw. Portions are decent size and most definately worth the money. All accompanied Mexican fused rice, or potatoes squares.

  • Review of the venue
I've only ever been here midweek. Both times it wasnt too busy, which was nice....but if you like that bustling atmosphre when you eat - then maybe the weekends are a better option. Background music is Mexican [as you'd kinda expect]. Well decorated in black and red and the service was brilliant. Really friendly.

  • Would you go again?
I have been!

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Yep

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
Yeah. Lunch time. 2 courses for £6.95, or 3 course for £9.95. All wraps £4.50
Main and a starter £11.95 all week before 7pm.

  • Price Paid
£65 for the lot.

  • Overall score out of 10

Having only been midweek, im going to go with a 7. Good value and a nice place.

Something for day time, early evening.

  • Restaurant Name:
Cafe Rouge

  • Location
Back of the Met Quarter, Whitechapel, in the city. Map Here

  • Link to their website
http://www.caferouge.co.uk/locations_restaurant.php?id=10

  • How many went
4 People.

  • What was [roughly] ordered
2 people had starters, all 4 had mains, and 2 had dessert. Also ordered olives and bread, and approx 6-8 pints of Stella, and a bottle of red wine.

  • Review of the Food
Having lived in France. I'd heard about Cafe Rouge, but had this impression that it literally was a cafe, and as such the food wouldnt be upto much. It does have that French bistro feel to the place, but the food it definately better than your average day time scran!!!. Personally, I had the platter of dried cured meats to start followed by "Confit de Canard" [duck in orange sauce with dauphinoise potatoes]. It was equal to anything I had order in France of the same. The menu really is top draw - especially like i say, for a day time eaterie. Although, this place is open til 10/11pm of a night. Personally, Id use it for a day time, or a relaxed eveing meal.

  • Review of the venue
As touched on above. The layour is very mucj French bistro. Loats of french signs, fancy old chandelliers and lighting, and more bistro seating that comfy leather chairs or anything. But it is quaint, and it is friendly and atmospheric.

  • Would you go again?
Definaltely.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
They recommended it to me.

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
Fixed menu choices for £6.95 for 2 courses or £9.95 for 3 courses. Or 2 courses and a drink [anything] for £9.95.

  • Price Paid
Worked out about £25 per person when we went - which for what I had, was well worth it.

  • Overall score out of 10
It suprised me this place, and i'd give it a very solid 7.5. Only let down as its not the type of place Id go for nice one-on-one meal with the missus....but then, do we always need that?

Restaurant Name: Geisha

Location: Mrytle Street (Past Hardman Street)

Link to their website http://www.geishaliverpool.com/

How many went: 2

What was [roughly] ordered: Soup & Prawns for Starters, Steak and duck for mains, 2 bottles of wine

Review of the Food: Spot on, well cooked and presented nicely, we didn't wait too long either. The Food is decsribed as Pan Asian, so some of it can be a bit spicy.

Review of the venue: Brilliantly decorated and some crazy chairs dotted in the downstairs bar. Service was pretty good, not the friendliest guy serving, but not that it would put you off. Watch out for the blinking woman

Would you go again? Definitely

Would you recommend it to friends and
 family? Yes

Any known offers of fixed menus? Probably not

Price Paid £80

Overall score out of 10: 9, reccomended. We waited half an hour on a busy friday night and we had booked a table already, if not for that i'd have said a ten.

One out of town. Smithdown Road, Liverpool South. Near Allerton Road.

  • Restaurant Name:
Mustard

  • Location
336-338 Smithdown Road, Liverpool 15. Map Here

  • Link to their website
http://www.mustardrestaurantandbar.co.uk/

  • How many went
4 People.

  • What was [roughly] ordered
2 courses each. 3 Bottles of red wine, and about 4 bottles of Peroni.

  • Review of the Food
Again, a little gem of a find. The places looked the part, but I wasnt expecting great things from the food. It came out beautiully. Well presented, and good sized portions. A decent selection on the menu, but not loads [which can often make decisions hard]. I had BLACK PUDDING, Black pudding with chicpeas, mushrooms, pancetta with a rich butter jus   to start, and LAMB SHOULDER, Slow roasted lamb shoulder marinated with sundried tomato, rosemary, thyme and garlic served with a creamy potato mash for main. Both were cooked supremely well, and presented great.

  • Review of the venue
Location wise, its possibly off the beaten tack for some. But if your going to Allerton Road [or that area] then its sound. Or if you are looking for somewhere pre heading into town, its great. The place is quite swanky without being obnoxious.  The restaurant side is seperated from the bar with a huge swinging single sheet glass door. The restaurant has nice booths for groups or the usual table set up. Ive been a few times, and on a couple of occassions they have one man with a guitar on [acoustic] for background noise - which is a nice touch.

  • Would you go again?
Have been, and will do so.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Yep

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
Yeah.
Friday & Saturday 6-10.30pm 2 courses £14.95
Monday-Friday 5-7pm 2 courses £10.95, monday-tuesady 2 courses with bottle of wine £14.95

  • Price Paid
The fixed prices above. Plus yer normal ale prices.

  • Overall score out of 10
Value for money of the highest order. I've got to give this an 8. Only let down is the distance from town - but is that really an issue? Only if you make it one i think.

Curry Houses are ten a penny....blurred's said a couple of crackers there. [could ya add any additional to them mate just for the thread ;) ]

A bit pricier but superb is:

  • Restaurant Name:
Spice Lounge

  • Location
North Quay , Atlantic Pavilion , Albert Dock , City Centre [Far end from the Pumphouse Pub]

  • Link to their website
None listed.

  • How many went
2 People.

  • What was [roughly] ordered
Mix of starters, and a main each. Plus ale.

  • Review of the Food
I went to this place after a lad I work with [who's family own a load of curry houses] said to me "When we go out for a scran, we go here". Good enough for me that. And believe me it was well, well worth it. Ive eaten curry all over town, and in some nice gaffs. But this place is sublime.

  • Review of the venue
On the docks innit. Nice place, with the usual Indian layout on top.

  • Would you go again?
Deffo.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Have done, and they all love it.

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
None I can remember.

  • Price Paid
It isnt the cheapest Indian [and this is its only flaw with some people]. You get a curry in a take away for about £5-£7 for the main meal. But thats a load of shite compared to what you get here. You get what you pay for. It works out about £12-£16 per main meal, and the starters are the usual anything upto £5-£6. Ale prices are docks prices. So about £3 a pint.

  • Overall score out of 10
Only the price would let it down. If it was just food I'd say 10.....so i'll go a 9. Im happy to pay it, but I know some others arent.

Restaurant Name:Pan American Bar

Location: Albert Dock, Liverpool

Link to their website: http://www.visitliverpool.com/site/the-pan-american-club-p71851

Couldn't find an official website

How many went: 2

What was [roughly] ordered: Garlic Bread and Soup, Teriyaki(sp) Chicken and Steak, Apple Pie and Lemon Meringue. 3/4 Steamboats and Pints of Lager

Review of the Food: Soup was brilliant, the steak and chicken were cooked and presented very well. The Desert took ages to be served and when it was the apple pie, literally had Ice in it.

Review of the venue. Nice, if you been the albert Dock to any bar youve seen it before. Black Leather chairs, chandliers, barrel vault ceilings

Would you go again? Yes

Would you recommend it to friends and family? There are nicer places to go.

Any known offers of fixed menus? No

Price Paid. £90+, and i got a £10 voucher for the bar for the apple pie incident, which was a nice touch. Drinks are overpriced

Overall score out of 10: 7

Restaurant Name:Pan American Bar

I wasnt overly impressed with the Pan AM last time I went. Seemed as though it may have "had its day". Its owned by the Lyceum Group who also own Blue Bar, Baby Cream and Baby Blue amongst others. To me its as though its lost its originality. It was swanky and ahead of its time when it opened - but like you say. Its like most places on the docks and like a lot of places in town. It hasnt moved forward.

I'd give it a 6 now.

Sapporo Teppanyaki

  • Location
Duke Street Map Here

  • Link to their website
http://www.sapporo.co.uk/liverpool/home.asp

  • How many went
Around 12 - 15

  • What was [roughly] ordered
Everybody had a starter, a different bit of sushi for everyone.
Then the main courses were varied, I had king prwans, others had noodles, lots of variety.

  • Review of the Food
Absolutely brilliant.  The food is cooked right in front of you and was very fresh.  The sushi was great, and if you haven't tried it you really should

  • Review of the venue
The venue is what you go for.  There are around 20 tables all laid out in a U shape.  In the middle of this U is the chef who will cook your food for you on his hot plate.  Lots of fire, tricks, and laughter ensue and it really is dinner and a show.
The place is very clean and has a well stocked bar, and the staff are very friendly.

We did have to wait for around 40 minutes before the chef turned up to our table, which was the only downside.

Great times, and you also get some potato fritters thrown at you...which you have to catch in your mouth.

  • Would you go again?
Definately.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Definatley.  (Although it'd be best going as either a couple or in groups of 5+)

  • Price Paid
It's quite pricey but you et what you pay for.  The main courses were around £10, starters around £5 the bar being a normal town price.

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
Not sure.

  • Overall score out of 10
9/10

  • Restaurant Name:
Amber
  • Location
193-195 Rose Lane. Mossley Hill, L18

  • Link to their website
http://www.amberwinebar.com/

  • How many went
4 People.

  • What was ordered
A seafood box, olives, bread and dips as starters. Fish and chips, Scouse, Sausage and mash and a veggie combo box as mains.  1 bottle of Cotes de Ventoux (£17).

  • Review of the Food
Excellent, the seafood box was crammed with whitebait, crab spring rolls, squid, prawns and mussels. The olives were top notch and there was plenty of the bread and dips.  I had the scouse which was huge and beautifully cooked (although not as good as yer ma's obviously), served, as it should be, with a mountain of cabbage, red cabbage and pickled beetroot. Everyone else swore blind that their meals were equally good.

  • Review of the venue
Have avoided it previously as it looked a bit bling from outside but once inside the OTT decor, furry walls, chandeliers really works.  The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly right from the point where they squeezed our very late booking into their Saturday night to the point we left. The wine list was quite interesting and very well priced with many available by the glass.

  • Would you go again?
Deffo.  We're not talking high end cuisine here, just damn good cooking of some cheap and cheerful staples.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Yes.

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
None I can remember.

  • Price Paid
£14 a head for starter and main. Total for four including wine £73.

  • Overall score out of 10
10.  I can't see how it could do what it does any better. Perhaps not the place for that special occasion but for those nights when you can't be arsed cooking or just want a civilised natter with mates it is ideal.

I attended a function there last year and it was faultless to be honest.  Out of over 100 people, nobody had anything but praise.  And no, I don't work there!

...........(just don't order fresh orange juice, trust me).

Anyone else been to the New Capital Chinese and can vouch for how good it is? I always thought all the chinese restaurants on that road were a bit rough and dodgy bar the Yuet Ben.

Being going the 'capital' since i was about 10, which is nearly 20 years ago now, it's a proper authentic chinese, i would not really recommend it if you like chicken & sweetcorn soup and chicken sweet & sour.  The place prides it's on real chinese food, but as i said in the post it does cater for most.  Other chinese down there are jumbo city, which is alo ok, a little bit more expensive, but good all round selection.  the ones at the top end near the arch in my opinion are more your late night post bevy chinese.

NA
•   How many went

•   What was [roughly] ordered
been a few times, can have tapas, paella or their meet skewers
•   Review of the Food
really good selection of tapas especially the meatballs & mussels, but the pork ribs are also boss!  Paella there is good for two and the mix meat & fish is without doubt the best.  For something completely uniquie thought get on the meat skewer, loads of big chunks of meat.
•   Review of the venue
Authentic Spanish, good background music, staff really friendly and will recommend things if it's your first time
•   Would you go again?
Yes
•   Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Yes
•   Any known offers of fixed menus?
None that i know of

Tapas ranges from 2.95-4.95/Paella £11 each (min 2) Meat Skewers £11

***BEVY***

Really good drinks in here two, san miguel & Cruzcampo on tap, large range of bottle largers too, good wine list and the house red and whites are both really good considering they are house, both priced about 12 notes

Wish I knew that a couple of weeks ago.  Pray tell, or do I really not want to know?

Well we ordered a crate of oranges in every week (you know so you get orange slices on a plate after your meal).  Anyhow, if they got a bit mouldy they couldn't be given to coustomers, so we were told to juice them instead.  Once I picked one up which was so off that it literally crumbled into a kind of blue mouldy dust in my hands, I nearly threw up there and then.

Having said that I have drunk fresh orange there so the juice is ok, just the oranges ming to high hell.

Its superb.

As brownee says really.

It probably doesnt get any praise cos people automatically think "china town" then "piss heads, end of night gaffs".  But this place doesnt cater for that really. Its more about the main meal time people. Although it does stay open late of a weekend.

Its proper chinese, not the crap usually sold to appease the English.

If I was picking one in the middle of town, i'd go there.

There used to be a great chinese that looked out over the docks

  • Restaurant Name:
Chung Ku

  • Location
2 Columbus Quay
Riverside Drive
City Centre
L3
Map Here

  • Link to their website

http://www.chung-ku.com/

  • How many went
3 People

  • What was [roughly] ordered
A mixture of starters sharded between us. Approx 5 plates. Then 3 main courses.

  • Review of the Food
To be honest, I was a touch disappointed. It was nice, but not as nice as I thought it would be. The starters were a touch over done and dry and crunchy. The mains were cooked ok. Choice is massive.

  • Review of the venue
This is why I thought it would be boss. Great, original building. Circular. Looks right out over the docks and Mersey. We were there at sunset time and it was brilliant. The layout is nice, clean and modern.

  • Would you go again?
Possibly, just to give it a chance.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Id say "try it".

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
£5.50 per person - Served from 12 noon to 2:30 pm
Sunday Banquet- £11.99 per person (minimum 2 persons) - Available 12.00pm - 5.00pm

  • Price Paid
Worked out about £25 each. Which was a fair bit considering we never bevvied i thought.

  • Overall score out of 10
Got to say 5.5 really. It may just have been a one off day, so i will retry at some point.

Can anyone recommend a restaurant near St. Georges Hall that you can just pitch up to on a Friday night without a booking.

Going to a CoC 2008 thingy that starts at 6 but don't know when it will finish so it's tricky to make a booking.

Queens square is only 2 mins walk mate. map

So try "The Tavern" or "La Tasca" down there mate.

Think The Tavern has already been mentioned on this thread. It is a chain group, but the food is nice.

Funnily enough, No. Sarcasm on this board is great!

Restaurant Bar & Grill
Savina
Cafe Rouge
Geisha
Mustard
Spice Lounge
New Capital Chinese
Amber
Ego
La Vina
Chung Ku

That list has some good places to eat, but I wouln't want to take my girlfriend there for Valentines Day. Plus the other two so far that have been 'reviewed' are Pan America & Sapporo Teppanyaki which to be honest we've been before a few times.

Just wondering if anyone knew of some place else? That ok mate?

  Restaurant Name:
The Olive Press
•   Location
Castle Street

•   How many went
Been a few times mainly just the 2 of us, but been with a party of 8
•   What was [roughly] ordered
2 starters, two mains, home made soup, salad, pizza, mushroom risotto & steak
•   Review of the Food
Good, risotto was really good, not a huge portion though, so would really have as a starter not a main.  Not a huge choice on the menu though, would be my only concern.
•   Review of the venue
Nice, open plan kitchen so you can see in, the venue is a good size in-side, but for me they have got maybe too many tables in there.  If they took a few out would be alot better.  Bar area is nice..
•   Would you go again?
Yes, but there is alot of competition for them now i think
•   Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Yes
•   Any known offers of fixed menus?
Don't think so
•   Price Paid
Not bad, going rate really, can't remember the exact breakdown, but 2 starters, 2 mains, side salad, botlle of house wine and pint and half of larger came to 65 notes

Il Forno, heard good things but strangly enough i've never been! (That seriously is a first).

I was looking at LCW, 60 Hope Street and all that but the food is a little too posh for me, they do stuff like quail eggs and shite like that, load of me arse!

Geisha, that's the new Indian owned by Korova isn't it? What's it like? Is it similar to Mayur? To be honest I thought Mayur was good, but not that good, i've had better Indians and at a lot cheaper price too!

Restaurant Name
Esteban

Location
Lark Lane, about half way down

http://www.larklane.com/Esteban/

How many went?
Been as a couple and as a group of 12

What was ordered?
Usually a selection of meat, fish and vegetable tapas with bread/olives. Beer and wine by the glass although ordered bottles of wine as the large group.

Review of the food
Have been there about 4 times and always found the food to be hot, served in good-sized portions (so 3 each plus bread will adequately satisfy most appetites). It's full of flavour and there's usually 3-4 of the thing if you've ordered e.g. albondigas or some form of skewered meat.

Review of venue
Lark Lane itself is a nightmare for parking - always has been - so it's always better not to attempt to drive there, although Esteban does have a very small car park behind it. Inside it's not a massive place, although it does have a patio for warmer weather. The problem I have with it is that it's a bit dark. A lot of restaurants seem to equate dim lighting with better atmosphere but I don't agree. It just means I struggle to see what I'm eating. Other than that and the fact it can get quite noisy, it's a very sociable place to eat.

Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Yes

Set/Fixed menus?
Not that I know of

Price Paid
For two people with 2 beers, 2 glasses of house white, 3 meat dishes and 3 veg dishes with bread it came to about £32.

Overall Score
I'd say 8/10.

It's downsides are the dim lighting and noise - not conducive to a romantic meal for two. Also, on Saturdays if you've booked a table for later than 7:30 expect to wait for it as, like so many places these days, they double and triple book tables - a practice I loathe. I know it's only a small place, but we once booked for 8pm, arrived a few minutes early and still waited until nearly 8:30 before we sat down.

That said, it's still cheaper and far superior to it's "chain tapas" alternatives such as La Tasca.
