"Mind your P's and Q's" comes from the print industry when letter blocks were placed upside down. Those letters were the ones that got mixed more than any other.

heard it was 'pints and quarts' - when the barkeep was cleaning tables in ye olden days

but seems that both are plausible

there are only 12 notes in music (basically) so you're thinking 'so that's why i hear the same melody in different songs by different artists'

but the permutations on how many different ways those notes can be played (including also repeated notes, duration and amplitude) is.............

1,042,682,221,795,737,600

so oasis haven't tried hard enough really

ive been led to believe thats where the expression"dead ringer " comes from.

Dead ringer is an idiom in English. It means "an exact duplicate" or "100% duplicate", and derives from 19th-century horse-racing slang for a horse presented "under a false name and pedigree"; "ringer" was a late nineteenth-century term for a duplicate, usually with implications of dishonesty, and "dead" in this case means "precise", as in "dead centre".[1] [2]

The term is sometimes said to derive, like "saved by the bell", from a custom of providing a cord in coffins for someone who has been buried alive to ring a bell to call for help, but this appears to be a folk etymology.[1][2]

From Wiki.

When we played footie in the park, opposing teams would sometimes bring on a "ringer" - someone obviously either professional or semi-professional. It doesn't really make sense to link it to coffins...

I thought it came from when the campanologist fell from the Notre Dame cathedral and died from massive head injuries. The locals thought initially it was Quasimodo, but soon realised it wasn't him, but he was a dead ringer.

The night before Sam Giancana was about to be grilled in Court about the Bay of Pigs, someone, allegedly Anthony Spilotoro (Joe Pesci's 'Casino' character), snuck into his house and put 3 in the back of his head as Sam made sausage and peppers.

The diminutive bootblack was later made the Boss of Las Vegas before his brother Michael's malfeasance led to their mutual demise.

'The Ant' (from pissant) was only killed to prevent anticipated revenge for his brother.

And yes, he did do Geri McGee.

Persil was the world's first commercially available laundry detergent that combined bleach with the detergent. It's name derives from two of its original ingredients (Sodium Perborate and Sodium Silicate). However, it goes by alternative names in some markets in part because of the difficulty of pronouncing the name.

The Code of Hammurabi (1754 BC) declares that a man must provide sustenance to a woman who has borne him children so that she can raise them:

137. If a man wish to separate from a woman who has borne him children, or from his wife who has borne him children: then he shall give that wife her dowry, and a part of the usufruct of field, garden, and property, so that she can rear her children. When she has brought up her children, a portion of all that is given to the children, equal as that of one son, shall be given to her. She may then marry the man of her heart.[3]

Wouldn't Lime Street be the oldest considering a train left there to pass through Edge Hill?
