Has your accent changed ?
« on: June 3, 2007, 03:41:46 pm »
I've come to the conclusion my accent is a bit 'misunderstood'. I was the youngest of five and the only born outside 'Liverpool'...I'm the 'sconehead' in the family born in Ormskirk!

I still had a quite a strong scouse accent despite spending a few years living in Skem and St Helens. But after 8 years of living in London and 10 in Melbourne any iggnorant fucker now think I'm Irish  :no

OOT Alert!

Yes, I am not from Liverpool, before you attack my accent!

I was brought up to speak the Queen's English.

When I was 11 I moved up to Glasgow and got repeatedly attacked for being so obviously English.

After 9 years up in Glasgow and a further 5 in St Andrews, Fife, I am proud to say my accent has not changed a bit!

I wonder whether it is because of all the stick I got, coupled with a rather stubborn streak, I made a conscious effort for my accent to stay as it was.

So in answer to your question.....no!

Born in Hunts Cross lived there for 8 years so had a strong scouse accent, was dragged kicking and screaming to live in Runcorn where I picked up some woolyback but not a lot I still had my accent and got called Scouse. Met my husband and moved in with his mum in Speke as soon as I was 16 so although there are odd words of woolyback that I say my accent is scouse.

Got some bellend mate from Liverpool and I live in Ellesmere Port, when we are here he speaks normal but then when we are in Liverpool speaks like a scouser, makes me and my mates cringe and laugh at the same time.

Mine hasn't changed at all. Not that Eport owns its own accent I don't think

I use to live in South East London and had a stong London accent. I then went to Uni in Wales and my accent really soften, I've been told I sound like I'm from the South East England :P

I now live in Liverpool and friends says I have picked up a scouse accent, only slightly, but they could just be winding me up.

It's that positive inflection that Aussies have, the accent itself is fine.

I've got a fairly standard Southport accent, so when I venture out of Merseyside they think I'm as Scouse as they come.

My mate once went to Australia for 3 weeks or something, and came back with an accent  :D. It must be the air down there.

Nope, I don't fink my accent 'as changed at all. I was born in East London and grew up on the outskirts of East London, wiv a muvver who insists on correcting everyone's speech, and she's a 'true cockney born wivin the sound of Bow Bells', but she has always spoken 'proper'. I guess mine's never changed because I've always lived in the same area :P

Bradley's accent has changed since he moved up to Liverpool, I can definitely hear some scouse appearing.

Ive always had a fairly normal sounding Essex accent, so a bit like cockney but softer. Its not quite a dirty sounding as it used to be though since when i lived in Kent i was surronded by people Poshies speaking fucking Queens english!!! Since ive moved back to Essex through my accent has become a little stonger again according to the missus!

I lived in Corwall for about 12 years, a big part of my life, moved down there when I was 4. I miss it, a lot. I did my fine art course in Penzance so spent most of my time knocking around there and Truro.

Pasty's were a weekly affair.

Penzence is really nice, but a bit annoying to get to from Falmouth (as is everywhere apart from Truro).

Falmouth is alright though, not that I went all that often. Most of Cornwall is alright. I lived in the sticks, yet still close to the beach (like you can be that far anyway!)

I've not been back since I left in 2000, I miss it bad. Such a homely feeling place compared to all the other places I've lived.

I will eventually end up back there (or that's the plan) and get a place right next to the beach.

I know the feeling, lads I have known for years who talked like your regular wool from Runcorn started gradually turning into 'plazzies', yes there are people who live here who are genuinely Scouse but these aren't and now talk like they are its embarrassing and plus they walk around in Man U tops.

Their excuses are 'they pick it up'  :butt

I was born in Liverpool, and lived there until I was 13, at which point, because of familial reasons, I was taken off to Canada and then to the US. After eight years of living here, my accent has definitely softened a bit, and most Britons I happen to meet reckon it to be Mancunian. Haven't any idea why, to be fair.

It's a bit like that down south but they think most people from the north west 'sound like a scouser'. I guess for people that haven't lived in the north west it's hard to tell the difference between the many different accents.

The Americans can be ridiculous about it. My accent is never approached from the perspective of curiousity about my origin, but from the point of view of my speaking in "strange" and "bizarre" tones. That seems to be their main focal point. Also, I'm never asked "I'm sorry, I didn't understand you, would you please repeat yourself?" It is instead a matter of their making the most disgusting sound I've ever heard. It sounds like, "Huuuh?" Does my head in.

I suggest something along the lines of "WE SPAWNED THIS FUCKING LANGUAGE" - or something along those lines.
