2008/9 Liverpool vs 2013/14 Liverpool
« on: April 23, 2014, 08:45:01 am »
This season has been a phenomenal ride so far. 5 points clear at the top of the League with 3 games to go. 96 goals scored. A refreshing style of football being played and we're currently on an ELEVEN game winning streak.

The last time things felt this good was during the 2008/9 season, where we were in the title race with Man United and destroying top teams in Europe.

Both teams had very different styles of play, though.

Which brings me to these questions.

If these two teams were to face each other, who would your money be on to win? And why?

Which Liverpool did/do you prefer to watch?

Stevie of 2013/14 would be tracking stevie of 2008/09 throughout the game  :o

Attack wise the current team is more creative compared to the 09 team. Defensively 09 team was more solid. We lost only 2 games that season and drew too many as we couldn't break down wall defences.

I believe 09 team would win in a face off because of central midfield dominance thanks to Xabi link up with Stevie.

One thing is certain: Kuyt and Hendo will compete on 'distance covered' parameter.
Exciting times. See you at 'Title o'klopp'

No doubt this team is better to watch.  We've scored 96 goals this season.

This team is far better to watch but the 09 side esp late in that season could go toe to toe with anyone.

Strange how the level of that 09 side seemed miles away just a short time ago

Look, its all an irrelevance. Concentrate on what we do now and what we do in the future.

Hopefully in the summer there will be plenty of time for all this melancholy stuff, sitting as champions and rightfully back where we belong, on our fucking perch!

There are bigger and better things to be thinking about.

What? It doesn't really matter when fans on a forum talk about something like this ...

Of course there's better things to talk/think about, but it's only discussion. Harmless.

You could just not post in here, instead of getting on your high horse.

I very genuinely dont understand how anyone could possibly compare our performance/feel good factor between 2008/09 to 2013/14.

It was blatantly obvious that the success we achieved in 2008/09 was not sustainable. Our wage cost/revenue ratio had gone through the roof (and our revenues were dependent on achieving CL), our owners were bleeding the club dry and the club had been consistently cash negative for several years. After our success in 2008/09 our finances were so dire that we had to generate net sales of players during the following year. And in any case coming second with the 3rd highest wage bill isnt a lot to write home about.

This time is totally different. We are quite likely to win the League with the 5th highest wage bill. We are broadly cash neutral without CL revenues. While having the 5th highest wage bill is not a recipe for consistent performance, our success this year will bring in up to GBP100m a year of additional revenues - (45m CL, 10m broadcast, 45m commercial) - and this is not money we have already spent.

So this time around it is not a 'moment of glory' amidst a spiralling financial disaster. We are actually winning something with which I future success can be sustained and grow.

It's divisive this, and we're not doing division, let alone long division. Let's do it once the season's over.
