I very genuinely dont understand how anyone could possibly compare our performance/feel good factor between 2008/09 to 2013/14.
It was blatantly obvious that the success we achieved in 2008/09 was not sustainable. Our wage cost/revenue ratio had gone through the roof (and our revenues were dependent on achieving CL), our owners were bleeding the club dry and the club had been consistently cash negative for several years. After our success in 2008/09 our finances were so dire that we had to generate net sales of players during the following year. And in any case coming second with the 3rd highest wage bill isnt a lot to write home about.
This time is totally different. We are quite likely to win the League with the 5th highest wage bill. We are broadly cash neutral without CL revenues. While having the 5th highest wage bill is not a recipe for consistent performance, our success this year will bring in up to GBP100m a year of additional revenues - (45m CL, 10m broadcast, 45m commercial) - and this is not money we have already spent.
So this time around it is not a 'moment of glory' amidst a spiralling financial disaster. We are actually winning something with which I future success can be sustained and grow.
