Where will we finish???
« on: June 21, 2004, 10:19:10 pm »
US I mean not England and I mean next season.

Benitez has arrived and we can be sure of changes at Anfield - if only in tactics and training. I think he will improve us. I can't see the Top Five being too much different from this season but where will we end up?

I'm going to stick my neck out and say................................

We'll be Champions.

What do you think ( and why? )  :wave

Somewhere between 72 and 78 points. What that'll get us I don't know.

3rd and that'll be a good season.

we're a few signings and at least a season's worth of team building / structuring off winning the title, and i don't believe we'll get all the players we want this summer.

if we finish anywhere above third, benitez will deserve a knighthood.

Very hard to say at the mo, I think there will be some major changes very soon. Best see who go's and who comes and then have a look around Christmas time to get a better feeling on where we will finish.

I'd think 3rd is a pretty good estimate.

Domestic treble and just so we don't get bored midweek, we'd better win that CL thing as well.  ;)

If we keep certain players and get certain players, top three, a good run at the CL and a cup is realistic.

We've gotten around 64 points and 60 points the last two seasons, so I think if we can get that above 70 then Benítez will have made a great start. Especially since we have only ended above 70 points twice in the last eight seasons.

I dont think we should be looking at what position we finish, this always seems fairly futile given the changing nature of the PL. A truer indication of progress will be how many points we finish behind (or ahead ;)) of this years champions.

Like others I am more concerned with the amount of points we get because there is little we can do about other team's tallies. Although we finished 4th 60 points is not satisfactory for this club and was, I believe, ultimately the reason it was decided Gerard had taken the club as far as he could.

I've theorised on another thread about whether having a fit Baros might have meant another 10 points. We would still have finished 4th with 70 but I think that would have been seen as a marginally more acceptable season and I think Gerard would have been given his final year.

So 70-75 points is my standard for next season. Hopefully that will achieve the following objectives anyway.

1) Stay ahead of Newcastle (and obliterate the ignominy of pacing ourselves against Charlton & Aston Villa.
2) Challenge the Mancs and possibly overtake them.
3) Move onto the shoulders of Arsenal & Chelsea ready for a challenge the season after next.

As regards the cup competitions again the round you go out in often depends on how soon you meet a team at your level. I would hope though that if we are knocked out of a competition it is not by the likes of Portsmouth (who were duly thrashed in the next round by Arsenal). (I was going to mention Bolton in that line but it has to be acknowledged that they punched above their weight in the League Cup last season. Our problem was we punched below.)

And having typed the above I am reminded of what must be our first immediate objective. We must avoid doing a Newcastle and make sure that we qualify for the Champions League proper. We will be seeded but we must hit the floor running.

;D Thanks people - keep the posts coming. I am still in the optimistic phase as regards Benitez and I will be for sometime. Agree that we need to see the calibre of the signings (  and departures, you know who ) before we can have a realistic chance of guessing how we will do. I just like what I see and hear of Benitez. I think next season is going to be a real battle. I for one don't think Newcastle will do too much. Villa might improve but they have little to spend. I feel like some other people, if we finish above Chelsea I'll be happy. ( I think a trip to stamford bridge for the league game is already being pencilled in.. ). If Benitez can do what he says he wants to and instill a real team, collective effort, I think we could surprise a lot of people.

Fixtures out on Thursday (?) Likely to be swamped by the england hype. I hope they beat Portugal though and keep the interest going for us all to stave off the premier league cold turkey we are all going through.  ;D

Better than this year's points total and I'll be happy.

Above 70 points and I'll be very happy.

Throw in the knock-out stages of the Champions League and a day out in Cardiff (for any reason) and I'll be ecstatic.

A trip to Ninian Park to take on City on a cold January afternoon in the third round of the FA Cup?

Think we'll do OK next season - depending on who we sign - as per a few other posts - if Gerrard goes, I'd be happy to finish above Chelsea ( And beat them in the FA cup final ).  ;)

They should hold the Champs League final at Anfield South so we can be guaranteed of winning it!

Seriously tho', is that possible? Holding a CL final in a stadium not used by a regular team?
