There is a champions league place for the europa league winners this year onwards. If spurs manage that, our champions league aspirations are in trouble.

What happens if United and Spurs win the CL and EL? :o Ik highly improbable, but only the top 2 in England would make it to the CL then...
To support a team in success is easy. But, to support a team even during bad times shows real character.

Rules come into effect only from next yr, just checked up. Another change will be if a team outside top4 wins CL, 5 teams will be allowed to compete. But, if both are won by teams outside top 4, only top 3 teams and the CL and EL winners make it next year.

We don't have two 'straightforward' games in a row anymore (ie. we no longer have consecutive games against teams in the bottom half of the table). Who knows, this may suit us as we tend to play better against the big teams anyway.

Swansea at home is followed by Southampton away.
Sunderland at home is followed by United away.
Cardiff away is followed by Tottenham at home.
West Ham away is followed by Man City at home.
Norwich away is followed by Chelsea at home.
Crystal Palace away is followed by Newcastle at home.

Given Kris's recent article, I'd like to post a counter argument, and a place for all naysayers and grounded individuals to share their thoughts. Let's call it a chihauha love in.

First I'll state that I'm a dreamer. Whilst it's mathematically possible for us to win the league, my heart will say we're in the race. That said, I've had 20 years of our league football kicking the shit out of me, with too many false dawns, nearly moments and Man Utd (usually) oriented 'what-ifs'. So here's my dose of realism. My attempt to fuck thoughts of the league title right off until the last game of the season and we're still 'in the conversation'.

Reasons.

Liverpool are shite. http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=308407.0
We're too young.
Our squad is too thin.
We're too reliant on too many teams (Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City) dropping points. It just won't happen.
It is absolutely unheard of for a team to jump from 7th to 1st in one season.
Whenever we start talking about winning the league, we completely fuck it up.
If we even get to the summit before the season's over, we have minimal experience of a title run-in.
The FA will make Howard Webb referee every one of our crucial games if we get anywhere near winning it.
The FA will ensure Luis Suarez is banned for 6 games for an outrageous piece of skill that offended an oppositions' set of fans.
We haven't strung more than 4 wins together all season.
We still have to play a Pulis side away from home.

So let's park the title chat for a bit, we've got a week and a half before our next league game, we're well on track to achieve our goal for the season, which we'd all have taken back in August without a moment's thought.

None of this spirit of Yossi talk.
None of this running through horses legs chat.
Keep it real. Keep it grounded. Keep it miserable.

If with 9 games to go we are 1st or 2nd, i think we will win it however i agree with most of what you said in that the spending power between us and City and Chelsea is too far to be bridged and that our squad is not as thin. I can't agree with the bit about the FA/Howard webb conspiracy though. But every time talk of us winning it starts, we bottle it sort of like a jinx or when you say Macbeth 10x into a mirror and get attacked, i believe if we keep up this form and not drop down to 5th we will qualify for the Champions League

If we win the Premiership this season, i'll deep fry my cock and film it.

The closer we get to the top, the more I rue the silly points dropped against Villa, West Brom and Southampton. Obviously Chelsea, City and Arsenal will think the same though.

It is a good feeling though, last time we had something like this was in Benitez penultimate season. However this time it's not just 1 but 3 other teams which make it that much more difficult.

Clearly the home games against chelsea and city are huge in terms of title ambitions.  That is if we are still in the mix when those games come around as we dont play them until April.  Defeat in either of those games is likely to spell the end of any title winning aspirations.  2 wins though could be massive and it could almost be in our hands.   The problem is at the moment it only takes us losing a game and we could be 7pts adrift of the other 3 which would be difficult to make up.

I just wish we could improve at the back as we always look like we are going to concede.  I think Skrtel is alright but Toure is a joke.  Hopefully Agger is now fit enough to start.  I also think we miss Enrique.  Does anybody know if he is close to returning?

We will win the league this season. Only Chelsea and City have better squads, and we have the best strikeforce in the league. We also seem to have sorted out our set up to accommodate that strikeforce. We will win the league this season.

It's not just about the points, it's about the form. We just beat the worst team in the league by a silly overtime penalty. Good enough, but not exactly champions' stuff. We're still much too inconsistent to win the league, especially in defense. We need to suddenly become rock solid. Plus, we have to be significantly better than three teams, not just one. If we play well, I think we can catch up with one of them (probably Arsenal), but it's really unlikely that all three will suddenly get lousy.

For the same reason, I have stopped worrying about ManU. They could catch up with us, in principle, but what are the odds given that they are still playing like a mid-table team? Everton also shows poor form.

Nah, I think we're mainly competing for places 3-5 with Spurs and Arsenal.

What happens if nobody wins the league?
I mean pellegrini thinks Chelsea are favourites, yet mourinho has played down their chances, wenger feels the same about his team, and now my fellow rawkites are predicting an unsuccessful challenge from the mighty reds.
Haven't heard from dim Sherwood or the moyesiah tho, I presume one of those two teams will be lifting the epl trophy in May.

The way I see it, supporting a team or individual in any sport is centred around one question 'what if?'

What if Usain Bolt can complete a hat trick of hat tricks? What if Bradley Wiggins can win an Olympic Gold Medal less than a fortnight after winning the Tour de France? What if a team that's 3-0 down in the Champions League Final somehow manages to find a way to comeback and win?

We are unbelievably lucky to support a team that has come to embody that question, with a captain who has answered it emphatically again and again. So yes, you can show me statistical analysis that predicts we have 6.2% chance of winning the league or state that there's no precedent of a team going from 7th to 1st; but excuse me if I respectfully decline from taking any notice.

Yes, we may not win the league this year; yet at this stage of the season with this strike duo, this manager and this form I can't help myself from asking the question 'what if?'

I was just wondering why we're doing so well in the league this year as opposed to last year.
While I was thinking it just came to my mind that almost all our players have at 3 years of premier league experience (our first team starters) that is. Another intriguing aspect is that, we have a strong British core, one that we possessed back in the 80's and what Manchester United have possessed for a long time in the recent past.

We have Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Steven Gerrard, John Flanagan and Daniel Sturridge. That's a some of the best English players in the country in their respective positions at the moment in my opinion. Bar Flanagan, who's still growing into his role, I think all four of them are worthy of a place in the starting line-up of England.

Apart from that, we have a first-team line-up that is well experienced in the Premier League and young with energy. Simon Mignolet has three seasons under his belt, having been at Sunderland since 2010.

John Flanagan, will have three at the end of this season. Kolo Toure, Skrtel and Agger have been at it for years in the PL. So has Enrique, but since he has been injured Cissokho has been playing there and now slowly appears to be inegrating into the team, not least helped by the fact that his team mates are already comfortable and know the league well. Lucas has obviously been here for a while now.
This is Henderson's fourth season in the PL, Gerrard has been year for over a decade. Coutinho and Sterling are into their second seasons and Suarez is into his third.

We're finally starting to settle as opposed to the first-team we had just a season or two back. I sight this as the major reason to our title thrust. What do you think? I know I've not structured my thoughts well, please excuse me, have an exam coming up tomorrow :P
To support a team in success is easy. But, to support a team even during bad times shows real character.
