Ours and Feyenoord's last game of the season is May 19th. Slot's contract won't officially begin till June 1st anyway but I'm hoping he'll be here to get things started early.

If it was us the fans would be cheering Arsenal on.

They won't want City winning it (United never won 4 in a row) but if it's out of Arsenal's hands anyway when they play them, then they'll be less bothered.

I'll put my hands up and admit I wanted Chelsea to beat us at Anfield. Think it was in 2010 and we had nothing to play for. The record of 19 titles meant a lot back then and we had nothing else going for us.

Felt a bit guilty but I certainly wasn't the only one. I knew quite a few who let out a wry smile when Gerrard made that back pass that led to Drogba scoring.

Liverpool FC Forum / Re: Darwin Núñez (Darwin Gabriel Núñez Ribeiro)

OK, I won't address all of this as I've already covered most in other posts, But...If you want to talk about outliers, then I don't feel that this season can be described as Nunez "running cold", as this is how Nunez has been in every season but one of his professional career. His second season at Benfica is the actual outlier. The rest of the time he's been pretty much like what we're seeing now.  Time will tell and I do genuinely want Darwin to succeed, but  in my opinion it's quite likely that we're just going to be getting more of the same going forward and what you perceive as running cold is simply his normal level across a season.

This season is not an really that much of an outlier for how clinical Jota has been either. He's outperformed his xG for three of the past four years, falling marginally under it in the other season (21/22).  He's had more chances,so perhaps his positioning has improved or maybe that aspect is just dumb luck. In terms of how clinical he has been though, it's been pretty much 'par for the course' as it were.

Of course it's an outlier. He's doubled his xG. So it absolutely hasn't been par for the course. Re Nunez, I just don't buy the idea that one season is an outlier but the others are 'him'. The reality is that players underperform and over perform their xG in different seasons but it mostly reverts to the mean. So it's best to take the largest sample size possible as representative. And if his one season of overperforming his xG is enough to cause him to be basically hitting his xG over his career guess what, he's not undershooting his xG by very much. And of course, even if you think he's mostly going to shoot under his xG you still need to accept natural variance and luck - see the number of times he's hit the woodwork this season and reckon with the possibility that he might overperform in future seasons, as he over performed in a past season.

People just need to stop under emphasising the ability to get high value shots and over emphasising finishing ability and we'll all be a lot closer to agreement. I doubt we'll agree in every particular but at least we won't have insane ideas about Nunez being rubbish in the face of actual production, which is genuinely really good even with his bad (and unlucky) finishing.

Are you mad? He did everything wrong. Rank incompetence followed by an astonishing decision to cover up his mistake by asking the goalie to hit the floor. Would he have done the same with Alisson? We'll never ever know. But I'd have thought probably.

It's a boring question though since neither of us can know the answer and there is no evidence either that will clinch it.

Let me ask you a question about the Gabriel hand ball now. Was the referee biased towards Arsenal or was that just incompetence?

No Areola made the mistake not Taylor. Areola had a brain fart and thought he had been awarded a free kick. Taylor did not blow his whistle to cover up a mistake he had made. He saw Gakpo bearing down on goal and then blew his whistle.

As for the Gabriel it is far more nuanced. Players regularly give the ball to a team mate at restarts. A good example is when a player looks to take a quick throw in and then decides to throw it under arm to the regular throw in taker. By the letter of the law you could deem that action a foul throw.

I think Nyberg made a poor decision but it is far less straight forward than a player awarding himself a free kick.

Not sure why but I’m not feeling especially confident in anything about the club right now. New structure. New coach. Same squad. Something just feels off. Klopp leaving is obviously a big negative to overcome. But there’s just something wrong atmospherically to me. Or maybe I’m just hallucinating.

This season ending so flatly now, I hope it doesn’t carry into the next one.

"Same squad" - it's not summer yet! Pretty sure there'll be changes.  But I'd really rather want Slot to be here first  than us getting rid of players or signing anyone without his input!

I know Ronnie does it (although he’s actually at least earned the right to), I don’t get why this newer generation of players do so much media work during (hell, even after being knocked out) tournaments. Murphy was always the standout for it, but recent times there’s the likes of Lisowski, Wilson and now Allen doing it. Surely you’d want to just concentrate on your game and then when/if you’re knocked out you’d want to be nowhere near it.

allen was asked and said he was only going to do comms if he wasn't playing the day after. other than that he's in the city anyway and what else is he going to do?

The French league usually has some top class DMs. Where the fuck are they all?

Stalling is only going to harden voters' resolve against them.
They already know that the game is up. Delaying gives them more time to line their pockets and create some extra havoc for Labour to sort.

I'm happy to hear the news about Jim; thanks, John!
