Indeed.  It's a ludicrous comparison.  :wanker

It's much more like Connect 4 than Monopoly.

;D

You're right tho, it is much more like Connect 4.  ;D

The debate has been long as to whether chess should be seen as a sport, and I used to be a passionate advocate that it was. I'm older know, so less arsed. The UK, Ireland, Belgium and Sweden are the only four countries in Europe to not recognise chess as a sport, with Sweden set to change that. Chess and even Bridge might be at the Olympics soon, tho Chess has its own Olympiad, so not sure how that'll get worked out.

But chess at the highest level, and even at my level, feels like a sport. Chess is also war, but nobody dies, except those two grandmasters who died at the same tournament a few years back - one over the board, and one in the hotel after a loss. Ultimately chess, for me anyway, holds its own place; part sport, part game, part war.

Have been playing alot recently, and am currently searching for a good book on chess for beginners. I need to get back to basics. Mikhail Tal is becoming my chess hero, but in order to play like Tal, you need a solid grounding, and that I simply don't have.

Good morning Chess lovers and Chess meh'ers.

Before I get into the main reason for this post, a quick look at a game between Magnus Carlsen v Vassily Ivanchuk in the 2015 World Blitz Championships. I have been watching alot of chess matches on YT these last few weeks (mainly old classical matches), but this game kind of reminded me about the whole chess/sport thing. Each player has 5 mins to make all his moves, and the Norwegian commentary as a background noise works very well.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/vxHZsmZvvwM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/vxHZsmZvvwM</a>

But the real fun for me has been Banter Blitz. Our old friend Jan Gustafsson plays blitz games against members of the chess24 community, who line up like baying whores to pit their wits against him. Each player has 5 mins to make all their moves. He talks his way thru the games, and even tho he only has a few minutes to play each game, he still finds time to chat about TV programmes, politics, films etc in his own inimitable style. It's extraordinary to watch really, how he can so quickly analyse a game, and he's not playing against idiots (occassionally he does tho)... he's playing against very very good players. Svidler also does the occassional BanterBlitz, as do others, but Jan is the man, and a new one pops up every week on average.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/fJu_z34zymI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/fJu_z34zymI</a>

And on one occassion, Jan takes on the role of an American radio shock jock, abusing all of his opponents in an appalling, hilarious manner. Even for non chess lovers, this will be an entertaining watch for you this Friday. Enjoy. All the banterblitz vids seem to take 20 seconds to get going...

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/GxAeFd6HU7M" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/GxAeFd6HU7M</a>

Was really interesting to see the ol' fella at it again. Glad I caught that - not sure exactly how I knew, but was a 'wha!?' moment tonight.

Think he had his opponent at first (not sure what opening it was), who's a blitz specialist, so a real test for Kasparov in his - I THINK - first match since his retirement? Must be over 10 years since he retired. Trying to find a quote of his I saw but can't find it now... something like 'I'll be foolish to think I'll be where I was, much like my hairline', but I think he freaked out his opponent just by sitting there. Kasparov played black and Nakamura did something odd earlier on, and Kasparov was up positionally, developmentally... everything, and we were all hoping he'd crash the bishop in but the game soon equalled out after a very odd rook move - I couldn't work it out - the commentators couldn't (love chess commentary, especially fro America), nobody could, and then Kasparov brilliantly held out for a draw under serious time trouble. At times at the end there, his hands were shaking over the pieces as they blitzed it out. Blitz chess is cracking telly I reckon.

What's the link you've got for Gustafsson? I'm a regular watcher of his Banter Blitz shows now, but is he doing the whole competition in German?

It's a Chess24 live stream on YouTube. And I think it will all be in German. He just announced that tomorrow he'll be commentating with the German rapid champion.

He just hunches over the board with his hands over his ears like he always used to be and he's still just as in your face, even if he his grey. Enjoyable post match chat with him just now. He reminds me of Viv Richards and Mark E Smith when he enters the stage.

I'm a member on there.. and I thought he was commentating in german on this, but I was in such a state going 'wha?!' that I really didn't know what was going on, plus some technical issues. Will have to watch a few games this week. :thumbup

Watched a bit again yesterday after our game and basically caught the last round of matches. This time Gustafsson had a German GM with him, but it wasn't that entertaining to watch. He doesn't have the same kind of chemistry with him as he has with Peter Svidler. I also think it's a bit exhausting that they just keep switching between the matches. Stuff happens so fast and at times it is rather hard to follow all the things that are going on...

Yeah, thanks for getting me hooked again by bumping this thread... ;)
Have seen most of the last three days. I kind of feel for Kasparov. He seems to be doing well in most games, but just messes it up most of the time. At least according to Gustafsson and that other guy.
One thing I hate is that even in Blitz they have increment or delay as this is called. It should be 5+0. That's the whole point of Blitz. Not having a guy making 50 moves with 3 seconds on the clock...

Am sure there's a better way to broadcast those blitz matches. Very entertaining nonetheless, but I couldn't help wonder if they'd be better off picking a game of interest and staying with that one throughout and then do some highlights from the other games after or something, as it was mental at times. Won't have internet for 2 days now sadly, so will miss the rest - will try to catch up later.

That's what they're doing on Chess24. They pick one game and stick with that. It's still a pain in the arse to follow, because their digital board has problems keeping up with the moves and the actual board in the video feed is hard to see. Still better than switching between games. Would probably be good to have a camera right above the real board...

I feel for Kasparov too a little, but age doesn't make you a better player sadly, especially with the quick stuff. Was really surprised to see a couple of 1.e4's to Kasparov, as I thought nobody played e4 to him back in his pomp, but he didn't win either of those.

Wish I had Gustaffson commentating!

It's a very different game with the increments isn't it? Kasparov took well over a minute making a 6th or 7th move or something - you don't do that without those increments, but that 70 odd move match where they were banging it out at the end was brilliant ;D I enjoy both methods but I've been playing 5+0 solid for a few months.

I wondered that about having a camera above the board, but it's sometimes hard to really know if you're looking at a pawn or a bishop from directly above. I did wonder if computer chips in the base of each piece that's directly linked to a 2D graphic would help. Chess24 doing it in english too? Am enjoying the American style tho of whatever channel I'm watching. They've had great viewing figures apparantly (Kasparov helping).

Yeah, increment changes the game too much I feel. It should be about time management, but increment just gives you a way out.

Yes, Gustafsson is great. But the other guy is still a bit of a pain in the arse. He just takes himself a bit too seriously...

Funny ol' day... The game, Blowers, and now chess.

Been following the Fide World Cup these last few days... a knockout tournament with some big dollars on offer. Can't quite get to grip with the layout yet, but it all kicked off today with one GM walking out after receiving some genuine abuse from the main organiser... one Zurab Azmaiparashvili (pictured below)

(feels very Daily Fail of me to put that picture up but hey ho - there is a reason)

So GM Anton Kovalyov has been wearing shorts all competition without anybody batting an eye. It's a knockout tournament with dozns of players all in the same room, so it gets noticed by someone because there are fewer players left. Kovalyov explains that he's only got these shorts as his trousers aren't comfortable, and instead of working out a simple solution, gets the heavy treatment from Azmaiparashvili who accuses Kovalyov of looking like a gypsy. Azmaiparashvili is a FIDE heavyweight (think FIFA) and a well known tosser... Kovalyov walks instead of hitting him. The shorts are hitting the fan in the chess world.

Come on Magnus!

He's been knocked out! First match he's lost in 10 years apparently. Not sure how they work out what a 'match is exactly but lost 2.5 - 1.5 I think. The victor plays Peter Svidler next who was looking sharply dressed the other day in a competition that has gone thru 'shortgate'. Nothing to do with Nigel.

 ;D

Am cheering the big man on, tho I could do with him and Jan commentating.

edit: Carlsen didn't play aggressively enough I don't think. After about 10 moves the white queen had him in check from the a4 square and he had a simple knight move to cover the king, which he played, but i think he should have moved his king to f8, cancelling his castling option, but allowing him to throw his pawns up behind a rook to add in some much needed complications, but it piddled out into a draw in the end. What do I know tho!?

I have it on in the background. Doesn't make good background noise tho, but I dip in every so often. Tiebreaks today, so not sure who's thru. Rooting for an Ivanchuk v Svidler final. After the storm that happened over 'shortgate'... he strolls in wearing 3/4 lengths and beat Kramnick today. A genuine punk rock moment I think from the big man.

Tried watching it, but gave up after his first win. I just can't listen to all this gangsta-talk that's delivered with such a heavy German accent. It just makes me cringe... So, I have to conclude that I like Jan Gustafsson, but I'm not too fond of Radio Jan... ;)

Red Hot Pawn or Chess.com

Also FICS is a good one but you have to do the free program. (Great for blitz)

This is fantastic. This is from today. The current World Champion, Magnus Carlsen v Peter Svidler, the reigning Russian Champion (after winning it for the 8th time recently), play each other and draw in a big chess tournament - genuinely don't know what is or supposed to be big in chess, but this did it for me anyway. This is their chat straight after the game.

I didn't watch it live, but went thru the moves earlier and it looked a cracking game between two players I'd love to see fight it out for the world championship. If chess was organised like boxing - this would be my hope, but I genuinely don't know how it works.

It's fizzing with ideas and subtle 'fuck you's', in a position that soon became seemingly endless in its possibilities. So often in chess, games can get Stockfished to death and end up drawn after 18, but this was a good dust up.

edit: It ends beautifully.

Candidates tournament in Berlin has started. Chess24 is doing a live stream every day from 3pm (2pm in the UK). Jan Gustafsson is doing the English one. Today it's with Peter Svidler. The days before it was with some woman who apparently is Anish Giri's wife. Haven't followed it so far, but will be watching a bit on the next few days...

Manage to watch a bit yesterday and today. Went thru the Kramnik Coruana match highlighted by Svidler from a day or so ago. Great photo of Kramnik after the match which sadly can't find. Image of him slumped over the board alone after losing that 6 hour game. I was in the audience when he won the world title v Kasparov and to see him like that was quite something. 'Well it's like a game of chess out there really isn't it?' as the football commentator goes. Would have loved to have followed that live with Svidler and Gustafsson. Great to watch, and sometimes under a sink plumbing, great to listen to aswell.

Forgot to mention Kramnik's 8... Rg8 move a day or so before. That's what woke me up to the tournament. Rg8 as an 8th move even weirded ME out just following the odd tweet. Nigel Short came out with a 'it's the sort of crap you'd play in a blitz game', yet Kramnik completely took his opponent apart with it.

Didn't watch yesterday as I had to play myself in the evening and didn't want to get a chess overdose... ;)
I do struggle a bit when watching as a lot of the stuff that seems absolutely clear to them makes little sense to me. I do enjoy though when they go off topic...

And I kind of don't like the technical nature of chess on that high level.

Half watched/half listened to today's games for the first 2 hours or so - sad to see Kramnik lose. I have a book on Kramnik (My Life and Games) containing 100's of his games - released when he was just about to become World Champion and went through dozens of them - 2/3rds maybe - and it was staggering. Did my head in going through his blindfold matches. The older I get, the more joy I get I think from not knowing what the fuck these lot are talking about half the time, so I'm quite happy just listening to them and smiling. They are at another level to me - in a galaxy far far away and I love it for that. But they can also make things SO FUCKING CLEAR! (argh!) at times too. Love dipping into Jan's and Svidlers blitz programs - learn so much from it - where it goes god only knows. I also enjoy the ongoing debate about computer based preparation that players have now - it's a subtext that interests me.

A major sadness for me with the Candidates tournament was not seeing Vassily Ivanchuk involved. There was some hope he could have been the title challenger for a while which I was really rooting for. It's his 47th birthday today (yesterday)... and this is my favourite youtube video I've seen this year - tho from 2 years back? This is how you collect an award...

I watched a YouTube video and decided that Paul Konchesky looked like a player.

Started playing a bit of chess because a couple of guys at work were on the Chess.com app.  Fairly even in one game at the moment and I've gotta wonder if someone super top level looked at the game, would they be able to see a clear route to checkmate.  This shit is complicated.  So many permutations.

Probably not. In most cases, it's just a case of seeing through to a position or balance that you're happy and comfortable with.

I love it. Their computer doesn't work and they can't use mouse and keyboard so they've set up a chess board on their desk and are analyzing the games of school style. Svidler clearly is embarrassed and apologises all the time. Gustafsson might be embarrassed as well but he's just his usual self... :D

had it next to me while dozing and woke to giggles and a plastic chess board, and then Jan sticks a phone up to the camera for good measure ;D
