Madrid showed us how far we are behind the top clubs to play for. 2nd in group all still to play for.

Shame but we're just not in their league at the moment. They strolled the 2nd half whilst we busted a gut. Could easily have been a lot worse as they fluffed 3 very good chances.

Hate to say it but we huffed and puffed without really threatening.

All credit for the lads though for not throwing the towel in. We kept going and made sure we didn't lose the 2nd half.
Has Steven Gerrard scored a goal even more important than the one he got against Olympiakos - Is this the start of something BIG?

Before people starting moaning and whinging and acting like they're just here to provide entertainment for the losers whose own teams can't even make it into the Europa League, let's remember who we played today, and let's remember that we aren't at our best. We always knew this was going to be a tough match, we always knew that Real Madrid, the biggest team in Europe right now were likely to beat us, but for the first twenty or so minutes we played really well and, even at the end, we heard our home fans singing YNWA even though we lost tonight. We are not finished in this tournament yet, we can still qualify and I think our team can give it a real try. We're in Europe, we get to play teams like Real Madrid even if we lose to them like Ludogorets expect to lose to most teams from the big leagues. We get these nights, and some teams don't.

So, to the moaners and those who love to whinge, fuck off to bed and get some sleep, because this isn't a night to moan about. We didn't lose to some mid-table team or relegation fodder, we lost to the current champions of Europe.

they are at the level we are striving to get close to, gifted them two goals but drew the second half and maybe we should have started with Can and Lallana, Mario very poor, not sure where he goes from this point but its down to him.

Good night for us with the other result. Win the last two we should go through. I wouldn't bank on us winning them at the minute though and i'd rather go out now than face Bayern in the next round and get destroyed.

and the right one, he offers nothing to this team and thats saying something considering how poor we are...

We are just not at their level :(

Its easy to blame naivety and that we should go more defensive. But I like the fact that we want to go out there and play our own way, we are just not there yet. We can still progress of course, but will be difficult. We just have to be patient with this team.

Cant explain in words how disappointed I am with Johnson these days, he is just not cutting it. He is supposed to be one of our experienced and stable performers but he never has been. Gerrard unfortunately is playing to much these days, but hopefully Can will help to rotate him. He looks very promising, young and lots to learn still but who better to train with then Stevie. Coutinho was class again :)

Lets just beat Hull at the weekend, its the only thing that matters now.

Can't wait for Sturridge and Sakho to be back.
But actually I don't think it was as bad as some had predicted.

Sakho doesnt play when fit, plus i dont think he's the answer amyway

Madrid coasted in that second half; we had hardly any threat whatsoever. Very disappointing night indeed; need to bounce back straight away at the weekend.

Theyre a class apart and sloppy goals ot not, they were not the reason they won.It made life a lot easier for them yes,but they are some side.

At least basel lost. All to play for still.

At one point I thought Real Madrid could score a try if they wanted to. Thought we actually played a good stint across 2/3 of that match except when things got tough for 25 odd minutes and we had the same old problems. I'm actually annoyed we didn't grab one in the end, but what's really worrying is that things seemed so much better without Balotelli on the pitch, even though it was still a case of being toothless.

Never been so 'ok' with such an obvious thrashing. We played some good stuff at times, but seriously.. what do you expect against Real Madrid? Especially considering our current form.

Definitely improving. Play like that against other teams & we'll be fine.. well, other than the ridiculous defensive frailties.

Coutinho & Sterling brilliant.

Nice of Real not to continue ripping us up in the second half.
We got nicely schooled, who knows if it'll do any good.
God I miss Suarez, only for having a genuine world class attacking threat you can rely on.

This will go down like a lead balloon, other than £75m quid, there was no reason to sell him....brand spanking new contract signed, just do what we did the year before, and refuse to entertain offers. Meh - anyways, its a pointless circular argument. My first post in this thread is more accurate of my feelings.

Madrid are a boss side, but we made it far too easy for them.
Can't be gifting them 2 soft goals like that.

Threw in the towel in the second half, when they saw Madrid taking the foot off the gas. Didn't like to see that.

Could have been worse, I guess. I really want to know how Brendan Rodgers could look at the desperate backline and go "hmmm, that really needs Johnson to stand in the other half and wait for his winger to win the ball and pass it forward"

2nd half was a non-event as Madrid stepped off the pace totally. They still could have scored a few on the break though.

Terrifying side, Ronaldo and Marcelo tortured Johnson all night. He was pure shit. Thing is, they only had to play at a high tempo for 15 minutes to destroy Liverpool.

Once again, when Liverpool ar pressed, they just aren't good enopugh to retain the ball.

However, on the bright side, it was a much improved performance and would handily put away the bulk of PL sides.

Thought Can and Markovic looked good when they came on.
Coutinhio and Sterling did well.

My biggest criticism of Rodgers though (beside the bizarre decision to out score Madrid with Balotelli) was hauling a striker off and going 4-6-0... never looked like scoring after that.

A forward is a must in January. Balotelli may already be a busted flush.

Beatings will continue until morale improves...

Seeing as we don't have the attack capable of bailing out our defence anymore, it might be time to actually start focusing on learning to defend properly.

I wouldn't care if Balotelli or Johnson never played for us again. Gaps too big in the centre of the pitch, is Rodgers just too arrogant or naive on this issue? Can looks like he could be a decent DM for games like this in the future. Men against boys tonight

Although we got dicked 3-0, I still don't think it was a fair scoreline, we played surperb for the first 15 minutes and were the better team, then we seemed to just stop the intensity and fair play to Madrid, their first class was top class. 2nd and 3rd goals just sum up our defence. we were quality at attacking in midfield but just had no striker to give the ball to. Balotelli obviously wasn't going to make those runs through the middle of the defence. Something tells me if we had Sturridge tonight we would of scored a couple.

Another shocking group of officials too....Not that you should rely on them for wins like but still...
