Yeah, I'm changing my mind on this boys. The way they do it is all a bit totalitarian kitsch. All a bit too dragooned. Whereas the Kopites were a bit like Joe Soap's army.

Ok let me just start by saying this I have lived in aus most of my life and have only recently come over to the uk.

So feel free to tell me I'm wrong because it's an opinion formed without a huge amount of knowledge to back it up.

My 1st point is that I think the players can do more, we the crowd are meant to be the 12th man a part of the team and they should make us feel that way.

I was lucky enough to go to Fulham away last season and I enjoyed it more then I would have thought possible but all the crowd got after out singing their entire ground for the entire game was a round off applause.

I know that might come across as a bit ungrateful but from my point of view I don't know how many games I will be able to get to I paid a lot of money to get those tickets a lot more then I should have and I travelled a far distance to see them.

It's not just 1 game for a lot of people it's costly and the people who go to as many games as they can I imagine do so because it's their way of life they work 9-5 to be able to take their families to the game.

They deserve to be appreciated and made to feel apart of the team.

Take a look at Dortmund their fans feel like there they are the 12 th member, and the players appreciate it often running into the crowd, bowing and interacting with the crowd and getting up close with them it feels like the players feel they are the 12th member as well.

Just another example liverpool went to Melbourne and after one of the most amazing ynwa I have ever heard Steven Gerrard was asked if he was surprised of the support they were receiving, don't quote me but he said something along the lines of "we receive good support everywhere we go."

If I was there with 80-90 thousand people that most likely will not get to see liverpool again that would have pissed me off.

So I agree with get everyone wearing red again bring a scarf, I just think the players should do their bit as well it's not a one way st.

You want nights like chelsea 05 again you'll need more than scarves you'll need a champions league semi final too. You want premier league games against the likes of Wigan and co to be raucous affairs we need to be on a title run in as in 08 09. Its really that simple!

That's a bit harsh about Stevie - the interview I saw he said "we were blown away by the YNWA".
You wouldn't have liked the 60's then. Ian St John , Rowdie Yeats etc didn't acknowledge us at all - as Tommy Smith said once - " In our day the crowd used to applaud the players - now the players

we were going top of the league against Palace and it was a morgue.  I know it was only the 7th game but the point still stands.

you can wear what you like, you can bring a scarf, you can bring a flag, whatever. The fact of the matter remains, its not what you wear that creates an atmosphere. Its vocal support. The only thing anyone need bring to the match is their voice. It really is that simple.THeres too many people who just dont want to sing, and love it or hate it its a fact.Too many people just go to watch the match and get to the pub and have a bevvy with their mates and discuss it. They arent bothered by atmosphere at all.

anyone who can afford to buy an away top can afford to wear red .We for heaven sake are the reds why do some fans persist in wearing away tops at home. I know its a scouse thing for the young support not to wear our tops but surely they can wear something red and we all should be wearing scarfs and proudly display them when singing our anthem

'Scousers,Scousers! where's your scarf's!?'
                                                    - Paddock Mancs to Liverpool fans in the  Score board end,Old Trafford circa 1980

Oh! how we laughed at those scarf bedecked, donkey jacket wearing, Air Weir booted fools, the following year , they too had shed their scarfs...a trend, nay! a culture, led by our very own had separated the knowing smarter fan from the scarf wearing horde...but that was then and this is now.

I don't know when I started wearing a scarf , but I certainly stopped in the late Seventies...however, I left behind fond memories .... my Kevin Keegan Silky...once tied around the wrist it ended up a Gordian Knot....my mam in her wisdom once washed it...the streak on Kevins faced made him look like a Bizzaro world Keegan....my main scarf in the mid to late seventies, like Kavah was the pinstriped fans around the world flags ..worn, naturally hanging down the side of your Birmo's!.. a gem..I loved that scarf, it enjoyed cup finals, league wins etc ...until some twat stole it on the way to a Liverpool away European game....stole it off the fucking coach whilst still in Liverpool!!

But there can only be one, my pride and joy, if ever , god forbid my house is on fire I will get my family out first and will ensure only one item comes with us...My  St.Etienne Scarf...the ziz-zag Allez Les Verts one ( gentlemen of a certain vintage will know what I mean) ..swapped it before that game ...a bloke offered me £20 for it afterwards...£20 in 1977!!....no way! ...that scarf embodies everything I cherish about that period.... defines that moment when we became the Bastion of Invincibility...Ive only worn it once in the intervening 36 years...the Kops last stand....promised meself I would wear it at the last game if we left Anfield...maybe, maybe I will get to wear it to see us lift the League again at Anfield...if not... I will wear it , finally , one more time.....it goes with me.

Since then only one momentus moment caused me to don a scarf...I couldn't help meself ...and Im bloody glad I did as I held it aloft during YNWA in Istanbul.

Scarfs will always equal Wool to me....so its not something for me , nor I suggest a certain generation of Scousers..but feel free to go with it...cos you may find  that if that  magic moment finally arrives  and we win the league and the Kop breaks into YNWA a load of fifty-something non scarf wearing Scousers will be asking to hold one end of your scarf!

Great post, that!

Loved Flashing Blade's post.  Similarly I think I had a long scarveless period and the last one I had for a long long time was the "fans all over the world" pinstripe silky.  Started wearing one again to Euro aways starting at Dortmund, mainly so I had something to swap.  Wore one to the home semi against Chelsea in 2005 and have worn one intermittently to home games since (mostly when it is chuffing cold to be honest).

I think you will find 'the' look is white boiler suit with 'Spion Kop ' sprayed down the side with a hard hat painted red....kits are soooo! 2012.

When you think in the early seventies, fella's would turn up to the match straight from work ( via the pub) in their work clothes...builders, car mechanics etc ....clothes stained with oil, cement , mud etc!..imagine that now....I genuinely think if a bloke turned up from  a building site with dirty clothes, they wouldn't let him in ...never mind the looks and tut-tutting he would get from fellow fans!............unless of course he was wearing a boiler suit and a hard hat painted red!

Will probably get called names and whatnot but I have to put my five cent in after keenly reading along this thread and even using it as the basis for a debate with my 9th graders (all of whom are football fans and go to the match regularly, even the girls).

I have never been to Anfield and only ever experienced the atmosphere on the telly (and there have been moments where the goosebumps and all from just listening to YNWA and looking at the sea of red brought me close to tears) but please don't overrate the atmosphere in German stadiums. Before Dortmund started playing well, the now-famed wall was often quiet silent and the atmosphere was nothing to write home about, same when they played Arsenal. They might appear loud on the telly but that is because the microphones are turned their way - they were actually fairly quiet especially after conceding; idiotic some of them are, too - at the derby against Schalke, BVB-fans threw falres into the neighbouring Schalke family block.
Bayern-fans used to boo their own club early last season and the season before the atmosphere was so sterile it was a horrible stadium to go to. One of the smallest standing areas in German 1st league footie makes actually one of the best noises - Bayer Leverkusen - they might lack size but if they are up for it, they turn up.

A lot of atmosphere has to do with success imo. Look at Werder Bremen where there used to be a fantastic atmosphere both home and away and now without European football the only time you get a glimpse of what used to be is when it's for the derby against HSV. Not even matches against the old rival Bayern München get the crowd rallied up now.

As for the dress code - honestly, who cares who wears what as long as you have a scarf or put your heart and soul into it? Just because I wear a shirt to the match means that I have no idea what supporting LFC is all about? That's rubbish imo. What does mentality have to do with how you dress?
I am all for wearing a shirt or colours at the match; I wear the shirt at home when I am watching Liverpool on the telly and I even took my shirt with me on an away trip with my class and wore it for dinner :D The pupils loved it.

Always worn a scarf when attending a home game. Not so keen on replica shirts though but that might be to do with my age.

Even when I'm watching the lads on the box I wear a scarf (not in a Hicks kind of way though, I might add) so I don't see why all match-going kopites can't simply drag one around their necks on a regular basis.

Can someone tell me what the issue with replica shirts (or wearing red in general) is? Here in Australia it's a massive thing to wear a replica of your team (under 22ish, otherwise still wearing colours) in nearly all sports down here. Seeing the home team's fans in a sea of their colour looks brilliant, I'm not sure how people could be against that?

It's explained in previous posts. Some people beleive it's because you're a wool if you do and that it wasn't what the fans in the 70s/80s.......in simple terms.

Live up in Aberdeen, so only down for match might be once per season and stay-overnight and made it a night out each time.

First thing to check in that overnight bag is always the scarf then the replica shirt (doesn't matter too much which one)...

choose to wear the scarf and the replica shirt because i wanna to and it doesn't bother me if other don't. There is only one person can make your match experience great (apart from the team's performance) and that person is yourself.

when other see you having a great time and etc, they would then want to follow you and do the same.... wear scarf, replica shirt, singing, chart and etc.

It is not impossible, its just improbable

There isn't really an issue, it's just a different culture I suppose. A lot of people here have painted it as a Scouse v OOT thing, but that's a bit simplistic. It's actually a lot more to do with a regular v daytripper thing. Generally, and I do mean generally, the people who you see dressed head to toe in Liverpool gear are daytrippers, one game a season people. I think they do it becuase they want to let everyone on the train/bus/whatever know that they're going to the match - even if it's just subconciously. Or, they do it becuase they think it's "what you do".

People who go regularly - wherever they're from - are a lot less likely to do this. Going the match is a normal, everyday thing. It's not some big event especially if it's just a run of the mill game. They don't need to "show off" the fact that they're going to the match.

Of course, there are anomalies to this. There will be scouse season ticket holders who wear a replica shirt to every game, and a daytripper from Cornwall who turns up in a brand new jumper and a pair of samba. Well, maybe.

Home crowds in general have lots of daytrippers so plenty of people wearing colours. Away crowds are a different matter obviously. Get on an away coach going from the Rocket or elswhere in Liverpool and you'd be very hard pressed to find a colour in sight, mainly because it will be full of youngish lads who wouldn't be seen dead in a replica shirt. It's just our culture. Nothing wrong with how it is where you live, it's just a different way of doing things.

It's every club's culture to be fair.
