Will probably get called names and whatnot but I have to put my five cent in after keenly reading along this thread and even using it as the basis for a debate with my 9th graders (all of whom are football fans and go to the match regularly, even the girls).
I have never been to Anfield and only ever experienced the atmosphere on the telly (and there have been moments where the goosebumps and all from just listening to YNWA and looking at the sea of red brought me close to tears) but please don't overrate the atmosphere in German stadiums. Before Dortmund started playing well, the now-famed wall was often quiet silent and the atmosphere was nothing to write home about, same when they played Arsenal. They might appear loud on the telly but that is because the microphones are turned their way - they were actually fairly quiet especially after conceding; idiotic some of them are, too - at the derby against Schalke, BVB-fans threw falres into the neighbouring Schalke family block.
Bayern-fans used to boo their own club early last season and the season before the atmosphere was so sterile it was a horrible stadium to go to. One of the smallest standing areas in German 1st league footie makes actually one of the best noises - Bayer Leverkusen - they might lack size but if they are up for it, they turn up.
A lot of atmosphere has to do with success imo. Look at Werder Bremen where there used to be a fantastic atmosphere both home and away and now without European football the only time you get a glimpse of what used to be is when it's for the derby against HSV. Not even matches against the old rival Bayern München get the crowd rallied up now.
As for the dress code - honestly, who cares who wears what as long as you have a scarf or put your heart and soul into it? Just because I wear a shirt to the match means that I have no idea what supporting LFC is all about? That's rubbish imo. What does mentality have to do with how you dress?
I am all for wearing a shirt or colours at the match; I wear the shirt at home when I am watching Liverpool on the telly and I even took my shirt with me on an away trip with my class and wore it for dinner
The pupils loved it.
