Phenomenal performance, our MotM.

MOTM performance. Great to see him getting back to his formidable best. All 3 of our CBS have stepped up and contributed hugely this season when required.

Babu or POP made a few lengthy posts a while back going into detail on how difficult it is for  CB to step in when required and get up to speed immediately but all.of ours have done exactly that when asked.

Excellent performance today. Everything over the last 8 weeks seems to be forming the perfect narrative for a Man City-Liverpool showdown in the QF round of the Champions League, where Joey will no doubt have to put the Little One in his place again.

Keep reading about how the coaching staff and players mentioning the intensity of training is greater the the match itself sometimes. That would be the key for players to remain top shape without playing actual matches.

I think it took him a couple of matches to get up to speed but he's in xxxxxxxxx now, deffo second best CB at the club for me. Not I've notivedd but I assume any criticsim he's had in here was as playing at RB? Dunno, but he's a centre back for me not a right back. That fact that he can play there at a push is a bonus for me if he had to and he's probably a better option at RB than Matip, Lovren or Virgil for that matter.

I love Matip, but Gomez at his best - how he played before his injury last season and in the last few games - gives us another edge with his pace. Our high line seems to work even better because of it. He must be one of the quickest players in the league.

Our best player today, aggressive off the ball, and full of confidence on it. His composure is impressive.

only concern i had when matip and lovren got injured was that we were down to 2 centre backs. had no concern over Gomez slotting in at centre back.  we are blessed with the cbs we have at the moment.

He is bloody quick not only for a big man but for any kind of athlete. This boy will have no problem playing in the NBA as a point guard or small forward.

Which really draw me into the contrast with Andy Carroll when he was playing for us and his career thereafter. A big lump that lacks pace and bottle for a fight. I watch him fell all over the pitch in Newcastle match yesterday and I thought, what was Kenny thinking?

Weeks ago when Gomez was having a tough period and Lovren made a mistake I said that Joe should come back into the team and someone called me out for it saying I was a Lovren hater or other such nonsense. Nothing of the sort. It's just that Joe is the future of this club and has quite clearly shown that he deserves to be starting next to Virgil when he's fully fit and up to speed even though I like both Lovren and Matip very much as well. When on top form, he's second to Van Dijk.

So since the big man came back in against Bournemouth we've conceded 1 goal in 7 games with 6 clean sheets (4 in a row in the league)

Our last clean sheet before then, Sheffield United on 28th September.

Lovren started the first two of those games (Joe finished them both), which keeps getting forgotten, but it’s undeniable that we’ve started keeping clean sheets again and Joe’s return to his best form has coincided with this.

Incredible game by Gomez today.  Made a couple of fantastic blocks to save VVD and TAA as well as some others this game.

Gomez V.Dijk partnership is absolutely incredible.

The one single tiny drawback is that we lose a little bit in our attacking set-pieces, at one point Gomez was even outside of the box to deal with counters. Matip or Lovren do help V.Dijk a lot in terms of either being a threat or distraction.

However on the other side we gain this incredible knack of keeping clean sheets and our build-up play is much better which means we don't do crosses excessively.

He is an unbelievable talent. Has the ability to go on to be thought of as highly as Ferdinand and Terry as amongst England's greatest ever centre-backs.

He is not even back to his absolute best yet either.

What can he improve on at this point? For me, the main areas to work on would be heading in both boxes.

Man of the match for me yesterday. Just looks so assured in everything he does. Didn't panic even when Virg had one or two uncharacteristic lapses in concentration. Covered well for Trent and Robbo a few times. So pleased for him that he's back to the form and confidence he was showing at the start of last season.

Matip is going to find it hard to dislodge him when he's fit again. (What a problem to have! I remember times when Liverpool could barely claim to have one decent centre half, never mind four world-class ones.)

He's also got this absolute bad ass look about him which must have some demoralising effect on opposition players. Virgil glares, very effectively, but Joe sort of sneers, like, is that the best you can do? Pah!

Overall, he’s probably been our best player recently. If he keeps this up then he will form the best central defence partnership with VVD in the league.

Martin Keown was full of praise for Gomez on MOTD.

You need pace to bail out your full backs and  make it difficult for quick players such as Vardy and Rashford. VVD could bail Robertson and now Gomez is going the same for TAA. Maybe that explains all the clean sheets since he cane back into the first team.

Bournemouth, Watford, Leicester, Wolves and Sheff Utd + Flamengo ... 5 consecutive clean sheets in the league + 1 CWC Final in partnership with Virgil

Funes Mori goal was the only blemish but that was in partnership with Henderson

We were impenetrable at the start of 2017-18 with Virgil and Big Joe. We are impenetrable again with Virgil and Big Joe. So much for playing a high line at the cost of shipping in goals.

Now that Henderson has shown that he is more than a capable fill in Fabinho, I would get Fabinho to deputise for AA instead of Big Joe when needed

Our quality in defense is unbelievable.

Matip earlier this year and now Gomez, are playing at ridiculous levels.

Our core defensive group of Alisson, Trent, Gomez, Matip, VVD and Robbo is so far beyond anything else in Europe right now its crazy.

the commentary teams over the last couple of matches have acted as tho joe was down the pecking order with various comments regarding he's playing well, making life difficult for klopp when matip is fit again etc, when he was clearly VVD's partner before the injury, those two are our two main cbs and i've no idea why pundits and commentators aren't aware of this, at least the commentator last nite acknowledged that he had partnered VVD well in the past

anyway, long may it continue (the partnership that is, not the lazy journalism)
