It's one day though, people need to have a sense of proportion here. It did my neighbour the world of good, the atmosphere yesterday. It actually made her live again just for one day, having suddenly lost her husband to the virus a couple of weeks ago. How difficult do you think it is for people like that? One day of partying is not going to make a huge difference one way or another. Some people need to have that little uplifting at the moment.

That may be true, if you can limit it to one day of partying.

There’s 60 million people in this country and many won’t have an interest in VE Day but will have an interest in different days, festivals, birthdays or whatever it may be.

If you send out the message of ‘one day of partying’ won’t make a difference then you have this difficult decision of decreeing what reason people are allowed to have that one day of partying for.

I don’t overly care, as I expect it, but it does irk me a touch when I haven’t seen my parents for 6 months now when I would have seen them 6 weeks ago were it not for this lockdown. I can’t do much of the things that I enjoy and people’s businesses are going under, but because it’s VE Day it’s alright for people to be out in the street partying.

I do understand where you’re coming from, and it’s great that it has made the life of someone who is grieving better, but if you’re going to adopt a blanket lockdown then I don’t think there should be an exceptions to it.

Might make a pretty fucking big difference if one person contracts it from another and goes and spreads it around their workplace which leads to the death of someone’s partner or child.

Of course not - I was replying to the idea that ‘one day of partying doesn’t make much difference’ which it doesn’t, in isolation. But if you have that attitude then people will, legitimately, feel that their reason to have a party is just as valid.

If you can have a party whilst maintaining social distancing then fine, personally I’m of the opinion that a socially distant party is the same as trying to sing during live football sitting down, it doesn’t work. If it was me I’d be pissed and forgetting about the social distancing, not because I’m a prick but because you behave differently after a few drinks.

But yes, if you can have a street party whilst maintaining social distancing then fair enough, knock yourselves out and do it as much as you want. The issue that I have is the minute you start excusing not maintaining social distancing because ‘one day won’t make much difference’ is the minute you open Pandora’s box to a lod of people deciding to also ignore it.

If you live with the members of your group then no need for any gap, if you don’t then you shouldn’t be walking with them at all, that’s my understanding of it anyway.

Yeah, whilst our politicians and prime minister were talking about "taking it on the chin," she was telling New Zealanders their approach was eradication and advising them to behave as if they did in fact have COVID already. "Going hard and going early" has paid off for them.

Most of the ones around our way were between people who were living together. As far as I can see, there is no harm in that. It's not that I don't get what people mean overall, but I have to go into work two days a week. In that situation you can catch it at any time. But what do people expect you to do in these situations? Some people have to go into work. Around here most people have stuck to the rules, yes you get the odd idiot, but on the whole people have been sensible. I can't judge the ones on twitter as I don't know the people concerned. But then, neither does anyone else.

Agree, her language is really precise and leaves no room for variance from the direction.  I think herding, second wave, end the lockdown etc. all build up to a weak stance which will risk to be self fulfilling.  "Eradicate" as you say gets the best results. Herding, second wave is frightening.

Possibly, although the very limited evidence so far is suggesting that there's a fair proportion of asymptomatic cases but not wildly beyond what was thought from studying cruise liner passengers. It's possibly just that there's a delay between being infectious and then developing noticeable symptoms. That will also be a part in being able to isolate anyone with it quickly enough to stop it being passed around once inside a home.

It will be interesting to see how many people have had it when they finally get around to rolling out a accurate antibody test that's for sure.

Nope I’m healthy so I’m one of the lucky ones. I haven’t been out as I didn’t really have to. I’m lucky really as I can easily sit on my own for weeks watching tv or playing PlayStation and it doesn’t really bother me.

The women opposite me works in a care home, she's had people round for BBQ's, parents visiting and been picked up by friends with her kids for days out.

Most care home workers I know are doing exactly the same, mind you they are off their heads working usually so not sure why I'm surprised they are having parties still [emoji849]

Coronavirus: Chinese official admits health system weaknesses

The coronavirus pandemic is a "big test" that has exposed weaknesses in China's public health system, a senior official has told Chinese media.

The rare admission, from Director of China's National Health Commission Li Bin, comes after sustained criticism abroad of China's early response.

The country will now improve its disease prevention, public health system and data collection, he says.

China has offered to help North Korea fight the pandemic there.

Mr Li told journalists the pandemic was a significant challenge for China's governance, and that it exposed "the weak links in how we address major epidemic and the public health system."

China has been accused of responding too slowly to early signs of the virus in Wuhan, where the outbreak began, and failing to quickly alert the international community of the outbreak.

China has rejected calls for an independent international investigation into the origins of the virus.

In April an EU report accused China of spreading misinformation about the crisis.

A doctor who tried to alert authorities about the virus in December was told to stop "making false comments". Li Wenliang later died from Covid-19 in hospital in Wuhan.

China has 4,637 deaths from coronavirus, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins university, and nearly 84,000 cases. Globally more than 275,000 people have died, with nearly 4m confirmed cases.

Whilst the weather is so nice and me and all my family have stayed at home with no interaction with outsiders, am I ok to go and visit them so long as I don't get closer than 2mtrs then?

I'll not go in the house, we'll all stay outside and I'll only touch a cup or glass with gloves on when I have a drink.

I've got 3 grand children's birthdays coming up and I've already missed having mothers day with them as well as my sisters, a nieces and a great nephews birthday so I've been really good following the rules.

Ah but most of mine are 80 miles away with my daughter being the closest at about 15 miles away but they're in a flat with no outside space and she lives in a city so more chance of being stopped and turned back.

This comedian Johnson has put up today banging on about cycling to work, beggars belief how little thought these clowns have actually put into the practicalities of it.

Imagine someone who lives even somewhere reasonably close like in say Huyton and works in town cycling to work and back every day...the work that would need doing to make that even half doable is off the charts.

Or people being asked to do it who work in the City of London who live in all the places they commute from.

There is no easy answer of course but fucking hell - if they are saying as he has today only 1 in 10 of current demand can be met then all i can say is wow, just wow.

Working from home will of course be massive and maybe is the biggest solution to the puzzle - but you just have to laugh at how these jokers think millions can just start cycling.
