Here's on for you. It's very early in Big Virg's Liverpool career, however.....
Sami or Virgil?
VvD is a better all round player than Hyypia was. He has a higher ceiling by virtue of his pace.
However, Hyypia was brilliant for us in his 1st 3 or 4 seasons. For years before we had a really soft centre and could be got at from set pieces or by physical forwards. Just look at what Duncan Ferguson did to our defence in the late 90's. That completely changed when Hyypia joined (as well as Henchoz). He was so dominant in the air, so able to handle the physical forward that we negated one of the biggest threats teams had against us. He was decent on the ball, had great positioning that masked his lack of pace (even when playing a higher line under Rafa) and he was a goal threat in the oppositions box.
If VvD can put back to back seasons together then he'll be comparable and could even surpass Big Sami. The other thing is that Sami contributed massively to us winning trophies. He has a much bigger legacy than VvD currently. Trophies won is difficult one to hold against VvD. It's not the major determinant on a player's ability. However, it does matter, to some degree, when comparing a current player of comparable ability to a legend of our past.
