That was superb stuff tonight.
Clear reference to bent referee "Martin" throwing the game in favour of Utd. The bloke in the interviews with the Police "Howard"
Coincidence?
Great episode.

I'm not sure how much input to the script, if any, David Morrisey had, but he is a Scouser and LFC fan.

You know it's normally set in a house, flat, carriage or something that is number 9?

In this case was "inside number 9" a double entendre, referring to the player?

Shankly quote, he must have had some input on that.

It was originally city v rovers and the ref supported United. But Morrissey insisted they change it as he would not have a tattoo of United on his back.

I'm a big fan of these guys, I've seen them live on the League of Gentlemen tour and I've watched all the series they've done.

I generally enjoy Inside #9 but there are usually one or two weakish episodes per series and I thought last night's was one of them.

I'm sure there will be much stronger episodes to come.

I disagree. I thought it was a low-key excellent episode. Clever writing with just the right amount of double-entendre's (although the striker wearing 9 was a pun the whole way through  :lickin) and a twist that was (to me) only apparent right before the reveal.

Edit: Here in NI I had to watch it on iPlayer due to a local program being shown on BBC2. These guys deserve better from the BBC than 10pm on a Monday night on BBC2, and even then being shunted by some NI crap.

I believe it was ready to air last March but the BBC kept putting it off with not much explanation to the writers.

Great episode.

Plus the main ref was played by Southampton's manager.

I almost feel bad for saying, but I was underwhelmed by it again.

It wasn't bad by any means but I'm not really sure they needed to do a Psychoville crossover - I think Inside #9 should be independent stories and one-time characters.

I still think they can do better because they have shown in the past that when they're really on it, they are some of the best writers around on TV.

Inside Number Nine was inspired by the Psychoville episode inside the sowerbutts flat so I think a one off is allowable.

Enjoyed it again, some great call backs. I didn't pick up on the Tina turner eyes ashamedly

Yes. I was laughing from the very first scene in a very similar way to the first scene of LoG.

Thought last nights was good.  Not one that would stand out if you were to ask me to name the best episodes, but a decent one.

I just watched it and I'm trying to work it out. Why didn't we see what was behind the 9 window on the advent calendar? Did the mum damage her car by running over the loan shark? If she did, did she know? I think I missed a lot in that episode, I'll probably have to watch it back.

We did. It wasn't immediately obvious, but the 9th was when the adult son stole the money... and because the window wasn't opened on the day we didn't see it in order. The young kid said they didn't open it on the day because it was they day they took grandad to the hospital.

That's the only thing I can explain though. It seems like a lot of other things might have been linked, but if they were then it was too subtly done for me.

Thought it was brilliant to be honest, it had fantastic acting and storytelling. I think go back and watch it again because everything is linked.

fantastic ... storytelling

What was the story? I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, because some of their stuff has been so well crafted, but I have no idea what in that episode constitutes a story.

Also, what was that grandma's knickers stuff? Trying to work out the rules of a game when I'm trying to follow a plot is never a winner.

Regarding episode 2, at the end,
Spoiler
why did she do that? Are we supposed to believe she was too enchanted by David's mother? Or that it was just in the script? :)

Also, what was that grandma's knickers stuff? Trying to work out the rules of a game when I'm trying to follow a plot is never a winner.

It's a story about love between a husband and wife, the unconditional love of a child for their father and a father for his son. It's about the importance of reaching out to other people - not standing on your own...

"Standing on my own
It didn't mean that much to me
I thought I had it all
I didn't see the mystery
I stood the test of time
I took the step to find
Love's great adventure"

Ultravox. They played it at the end.

Grandma's Knickers is a kid's game. The rules of are that someone asks a question and whatever the question you have to answer 'grandma's knickers'. If you laugh or smile you lose.

The big reveal was showing what happened on the ninth - when the son stole the money and punched his dad. And from that you understand the level of the father's love and forgiveness when the son comes back again days later.

Just watched the first episode of the new series. Absolutely brilliant stuff. So funny and sharp. Such a tight script.

Was gripped throughout and suspected all the wrong people of wrongdoing and the reveal at the end was ace.

It actually had me gripped. Steve Pemberton is as good an actor as he is a comedian and writer.
