I personally find the Euros to be more entertaining than the World Cup. The world cup practically really kicks off around the quarter finals.

In terms of the importance, it's World Cup > Euro > Champions League > major leagues > europa > major domestic cups > minor domestic cups.

In terms of football quality, champions league / major leagues shade the national tournaments imo.

As a spectacle though, the World cup and euros trump others, easily.

My rank in football:

1 World Cup
2 Euro
3 Premier League
4 Champions League
5 Bundesliga
6 Serie A

I never miss a game in the WC or Euros. I have missed funerals and weddings cause of that and my relatives still hate me for it. But it does not get bigger than the World Cup and Euros for me.

I actually like watching Euros more. WC has too many weak teams in the earlier stages.

Same as some others I really prefer Euros to the World cup.
It's more packed with quality and the referees are much better.

I think as far as prestige goes for most Europeans the Euros aren't far from the World Cup.

Carling cup, WC, Euro, CL, League, 4th, Europa, fa cup

86 WC was the ultimate tournament for me, south Korea/Japan the worst.

If you have 100 points to divide between the two competitions

World Cup: 99.9
Euros: 0.1

About 75 - 25 in favor of the World Cup.

obviously the world cup is more prestigious but for me i just enjoy having a summer of regular football to watch, whether its the euros or the world cup, safely enjoying it without caring too much (injuries to our players aside).

i think there are more no-contest and dull contested games at the world cup, but that changes after the groups at least

I don't see too much difference between the two, although the World Cup is obviously bigger, as it involves the whole world.. It's nothing like the Champions League and the Europa league, where you have a two tiered system with the better teams in the Champions League.

Most of the world's top international teams are from Europe, and no non European side, bar Brazil and Argentina, has even played in a World cup final since 1950. So, as far as I'm concerned, the Euros are only a small step behind the World Cup.

I think the Euro's might be harder to win. The groups are generally difficult, and outside the groups is almost certainly a tough tie.

I've heard they're expanding the next Euro's to 24 teams which would let in more of the dross.

Given that there's only two International tournaments that can be won I'd say it's important (certainly in the top two ;) )

as important as the Copa America is for America (even though I think the Copa America is slightly more difficult to win than the Euros). The World Cup is definitely the biggest tournament.

Scotland didn't make the top two of their group this time around so wouldn't have qualified for a 24 team competition. It'll just mean no play offs next time (unless more countries spring up I guess!).

The main issue with a 24 team tournament for me is that stupid thing that it isn't just the top 2 who go through to the knock outs. There will be a number of best 3rd placed teams too and if you look at this tournament as a template you'll see groups of massively varying quality so as an example, the 3rd placed team in the Poland, Greece, Russia Czech group would be more likely to qualify than the 3rd place from German, Holland, Portugal, Denmark. makes it all quite messy.

world cup holds more importance because at international level its the pinnacle, but the euros are held up just as high, most of the players truly think it's a more difficult competition to win. Thing is, I've enjoyed more euros compared to world cups, they've been great tournaments since 1988 to be honest.

with a 24 team tourney, that german group is less likely to happen.

Yeah I was thinking that as I typed it! The point still stands to an extent though. Some groups will be stronger than others so it's not really a level playing field. Plus you have a shedload of games to ultimately cut just 8 teams out of 24.
