Does that most games to be fair. He’s definitely improved the rough and tumble side of his game.

Wasn't his usual composed self today, those moments when he wasn't were when we were under a bit of pressure though.

There were also moments where you could see why Jurgen might prefer him to Gomez, even while playing a higher line.

Think Gomez has better recovery speed, but in general Matip's positioning and anticipation is still superior, and he's quick enough to make up the difference in Gomez's superior speed...

Nice to have options and all that...

I don’t think fans of other clubs have any clue how good Matip is. They all think our defence is just Virgil.

Imperious central defence partnership this.

Got a goal obviously, but what was just as important was his chasing down Aubameyang in the 51st minute when it was 2-0. Brilliant defending denied the shot.

Shame he didn’t score there, was a mile offside. Would have been annoying if they’d scored from the corner.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

I think he's learned to use his strength more rather than increasing it, he didn't seem to go into challenges and lose a battle of strength before. it seemed more as if he didn't know how to impose himself, now he steps across his man a lot more to shield the ball out and actually goes shoulder to shoulder looking like he's intent on winning the ball.

Yeah quite possibly. A gentle giant who perhaps didn’t know his own strength. Then along comes VVD and Joel realises he can push folk about too.

I could be completely wrong mate but its just how i view it, I cant really remember seeing him outmuscled cleanly and thinking he needs to get stronger but i can vividly remember seeing him play like a bit of a soft touch and thinking look at the size of you, fucking use your strength and show them you're up for a fight. He was like an anti-Skrtel. Skrtel used to look like he loved a battle with a strong imposing forward and loved chucking his weight around almos to the extent that he would throw barges at a player that wasn't even positioned for a shoulder to shoulder battle and Matip looked like he didn't want the battle. Its so good to see him putting his stamp on games and imposing himself

Yeah you can imagine Van Dijk saying to him that he needs to use his strength a lot more

Whenever he's had an uninterrupted run in the side hes been a very good CB for Liverpool.

his goal changed the complexion of the game. as do most goals. ;D

he seems to be adding a few to his collection as well. Looks like we have another threat during set pieces and pretty sure our coaches do train on the plays.

his block on auba today was pretty awesome too. Loving our battle of the CB. Joe or Joel and both are equally good and brings something different to the table.

Think he's at his very peak at the moment, playing the best football of his life. His defending is more convincing now and his aggression is a level above which is what we all wanted to see.

Our coaches really do an incredible job developing players and pushing them onto the highest level of performances. Almost all or our players in first XI are world class now which wasn't the case initially.

Matip's form is the reason we are willing to listen to offers for Lovren..
But more than anything, Matip's form has helped to take some of the pressure off young Joe..
While Joe has been great in his own right, I'm pretty sure having Matip share the load has been beneficial for Joe's development and keeps his hungry and on his toes for when he gets his chance..
