Why am I not surprised the Liverpool hierarchy have cocked up once again? El Hadji Diouf will be next no doubt.

Michael Owen had become so irrelevant to the club once he left us to go to Real Madrid; and cut all ties once he joined United as far as I'm concerned. As somebody above has put, the man can do whatever the hell he wants, it's a free country after all; but what a nerve to re-join Liverpool in any capacity. He must know he is in for a rough ride in this role.

The hate's kinda simmered down now, you can't totally unlove someone really and he was a hero to many of us of that generation, but the key bit here is just how did the club arrive at this? It's not a big issue obviously but it smacks of a fundamental lack of connection with the fanbase. Playing for Utd / Everton after us should simply disqualify you from stuff like this, it's not that controversial a code is it.

This sums it up for me.

The decision is baffling rather than inflammatory in my eyes. More than get annoyed it makes you shake your head at who is making these decision at the club.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

What rough ride? He's not going to be at Anfield meeting and greeting fans. He'll be wheeled out a couple of times a year in some holiday destination.

I have no axe to grind with him. But plenty do so it's an iffy one. Not naive enough to think, once they play for us, their hearts are permanently stamped LFC.

yeah, I know but those of that do - are like a bitter ex. We were spurned for another - and when that one soured, he moved back in down the road.
That said, Macmanaman did exactly the same thing and he doesn't get a fraction of the grief that the square headed little Judas gets.

And let's be honest, I imagine the anger shown on here will not necessarily be shown in some far flung corners of the globe, especially if he is being wheeled out for corp events over in those places.

I always reckoned Rafa never rated Owen and 'kinda' squeezed him out.  He was certainly past his best, through injuries, during Rafa's tenure.  Anyway, I can't feel bitter towards him, for that reason. We let him go and never wanted him back, he had to go somewhere.

Victorious and glorious....

Barnes: shoots his mouth off
Lawrenson: Makes us angry
Gerrard: Still playing for another club
Carra: too Scouse
McAllister: too bald
Macca: too handsome
Everyone else: too unknown to Americans

Owen: articulate, neutral, never says 'we' and almost Welsh.

It's the obvious choice really.

One person that would have suited that role more than anyone would be Xabi Alonso. A representative with class in the true international sense.

Which is the entire point.
There's the lifetime loyalty bar, like Gerrard and Carragher. That's a very high one, few players clear it.
Then there's the not play for United bar. That's a really low bar. Basically everyone bar Owen cleared that one.
I guess he was the only one up for it.

He's only a bizarre selection if they're going to have him traipsing around Liverpool shaking hands. That's not the plan, I imagine. They'll probably have his role/appearances focused on the far east and more distant markets where this sentiment of betrayal (felt most strongly by scousers, i think) will be less of a problem.

I live in Hong Kong and I fucking hate the turd. And Owen at one stage was a proper 'hero' to me as a kid - had all his tops, his haircut, his Umbro fucking boots. Probably the reason I got into Liverpool in the first place back in the late 90s. He's a turd though.

why not fowler or sami or gary mac for that matter? All had a good career here and seem more in tuned to the club than that judas midget will ever be.

our business sides make some really bewildering decisions.

Even as a player, not many actually warmed up to him i remember. A bit like sturridge now. One reason was that he never seem to have Liverpool in his heart and his interest always seems to lie elsewhere.
