theres a reason why they dont make turning off the pc that straight forward as just clicking an off button

I can imagine the howls of protests at Microsoft/ Apple when users accidentally clicked on it....

As for the Start menu, surely if you're completely new to a computer, that's the first thing you're going to click on? Unless you're spectacularly unobservant, you'd see the Shut Down command with a big switch icon next to it. In either case, Mac or PC, you're hardly going to forget where it is once you've located it.

you might click on the recycle bin first, its usually the only desktop icon on windows after an install

but you'd get bored with that pretty quick i should think

Depends. If it was a second hand machine sold by an idiot, there'd always be a chance the recycle bin could be full of porn.

Only difference is that Windows (without logic) requires you to go to a menu called Start.

You want to start the process of shutting your computer down don't you. Logical enough.

At least on a Windows PC, when you have found the 'Shut down'  option hidden carefully behind the start button, the machine will shut down.
My Mac however warns me it's going to shut down in 180seconds, and gives me an option to shut down immediately. It then proceeds to ignore my shut down request.

Oh hang on, I've already told you this. I suppose as it's my only gripe so far it's not too bad.
ps I've found absolute poker works with it, which would be fine, except the world's best poker players seem to be there.....

2 possible reasons for this...

1. They're Lucky bastards. Nothing more. :D
2. Mac users are smarter and more skilled than PC users. More Mac users play absolute poker due to the compatibility.

A genuine question Paul...

Guys, why not just go for some online blackjack...

I'm told by my poker addict friend that it's easier money, and, with downloading of a few handy guides of when to twist or stick in certain situations, it's almost free money...

Where do I find the secure erase options nidge?

Hard drive > applications > utilities > disc utility

Though to completely erase a hard drive, you need to start up from the system CD, where the disc utility will also appear.

How do you find it.

In what areas do you find either better or worse?

More importantly, what will your NEXT new computer be?
Genuine answer....

The display on the mac on the same monitor I use for my PC is MUCH nicer to use. I'm sure there's a technical reason why, but I don't need to know it.

Downloading and installing (and removing) apps is a much cleaner process once you get used to it.  I still have my suspicions that it's not installing and uninstalling as cleanly as I think it should, but that may be windows based paranoia.

At times it's annoyingly sluggish but that's to be expected given how underpowered the machine is compared to what I'm using.

I don't like the 'bouncing' icons in the dock, which seem to be feedback that something is loading. I'm not sure what's going on so it tends to result in me clicking the icon a few more times (again on a faster mac, I doubt it would be an issue).

Also if I click on the dock on something that's already open, I expect it to start a new instance of the app or switch to an already running one. In particular firefox does seem a bit unpredictable but it may be due the old technology seeming unresponsive.

A minor niggle is moving the mouse down into the bottom of the screen only brings the dock up if you are over the area where the dock is (my dock only has a few icons, so is only in the middle).

Overall though, I'm pleasantly suprised. I did need to go off and find DNS settings due to a hiccup with my ISP, I was expecting to really struggle to find that and get annoyed as I know where to find them in windows, but it was quite straightforward.

I would definitely pass one on to my parents for their web surfing.
I would certainly consider one as a laptop for using in the living room. Having said that, a bottom end windows laptop is all I'd require for living room use and they are going for about £350 now.  I'd consider an equivalently specced mac laptop for £450, but more difference than that and money would talk.

For my main computer though I'd probably stick with Windows. If I was upgrading, I'd want something that could just about play the latest/greatest games  and also I need the Microsoft stuff for work.

2GB kit, £86

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=MacBook+2%2E0GHz+Intel+Core+2+Duo+%2813%2Dinch+Black%29

so easy to fit, smiff could do it...

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721

Ta for that nidge - will make all of the necesarry calculations and see which is cheapest.

How many RAM slots does a macbook have? From that website, I am ideally looking for 1x1gb so it only takes up the one slot.

Further investigating I go. Thanks for the links.

So it's a 1x1gb piece of RAM I'm looking for. The refurb option looks likes it's going to be cheaper then going through the education store.

Methinks they doth protest too much. Still, it does come with a 'warrenty', even if it's only got a 13" screen rather than a 17" as advertised. This was the seller's last purchase, so maybe they got some good ideas...
