World Class Centre Back Pairings (+ one mug)

I had a discussion with my girlfriend about world class (or thereabouts) centre back pairings, Nesta and Maldini, Adams and Keown, Puyol and Pique and so on. And we wondered if there was ever a centre back who in his own rights was still a very good player, but was utterly sidelined by such pairings.

I haven't been watching football long enough to say (the closest I got was asking if Lee Dixon was ever a centre back), so I'm referring this one unto rawk folk.

Who is the "+ one mug" for you?
