Out of curiosity, how do you treat newly promoted sides in the latter?

For me, it makes sense to take an average of points gained against the relegated sides. Reason being if you take Hull, who beat us last season, or Boro, who we beat, you are talking a swing of 3 points. We could be either +1 or -2 depending on which relegated team you assign to which promoted team.

Whereas an average of points gained from the relegated sides split over the 3 newly promoted sides should give you a more accurate viewpoint.

Agree with everything you said about the usefulness of the tables btw. Good post mate.

Yes, but the average brings a complication that one has to wait till the entire set of games with promoted sides to be over before we assess them. Instead, as JCB says it makes sense to have each of the relegated teams to be replaced by one of the promoted teams in the same order.

In that way, Hull becomes Newcastle, Middlesbrough becomes Brighton and Sunderland becomes Huddersfield. That's how I came up with the tally, we actually lost last season against Hull and we've gained a point by drawing against Newcastle.

Relegation APLT: Week 11

Ok another change to my format. I think this one will be the final one.
One table with just 7 teams (a lot more eligible)

And one for drmick   ;)

Cheers- the relegation updates really help the boredom during international breaks.

Five teams clearly beneath that 38 points line now, but a few jammy wins could bring any of them out, while some bad losses in teams above could see them in the mix.

I was really hoping for an Everton loss on the weekend, it would have been a 3 point drop and taken them to -6. The graph would have looked so beautiful and I could just picture myself laughing everytime I looked at it. Unfortunately the footballing Gods were finally smiling on the bitters and gave them a way out. If it hadn't of been for that injury to Gomez I honestly think things would have turned out differently. They were the jammy ones.

It's a marathon mate, not a sprint. That improbably win has bought Unsworth some time, hopefully by the time they decide to turn to Allardyce it'll be too late or he won't be available.

Hmmmm.... the likes of West Brom, Burnley, Southampton et al are going to play havoc with the graph this year.

And we already know that the big 6 mini table usually doesn't correspond to the actual table (although I suspect Man City would top both this season).

Would we not have gone up 2 points for only drawing with them last year?
All the badge kissing in the world don't make up for the fact that they are, frankly, not Liverpool Football Club. It's not their fault. Its just how it is.

This doesn't compare like for like fixtures, but assigns each match a par score.

All matches are classed as par 3, apart from the away games against last season's top 13 think it is (So 12 matches)

So yesterday we only played to par, hence no movement.  It should in effect identify teams who've had easier runs of games on paper

Clearly it's very hard to gain points on par throughout the season, the trick is to drop as few as possible.  Obviously City are making a mockery of that though.

Those Chelsea and Arsenal results are highly annoying. I was convinced that they were the 2 weak-links of the top-6.

I still can’t see us finishing above Spurs over a season because their defence usually makes them super-consistent.

The Chelsea game is now an absolute must-win if we’re going to keep-pace going into the congested winter fixture list.

Have we ever had a +6 on the table before?  That’s four par-1 wins in a row for City now.

I don't think so.  Not since I've done this.

Chelsea hold the record with a 95 point season, which is finishing +5. That's a phenomenal points total.  Man City are on course to top that, but there's a long way to go before that.  If Kompany had been shown the red he should have, it might not have ended so well for them yesterday

Another week, another -2 for us.

Lay off it. We haven't had a -2 for the last 3 weeks and a -2 against Champions is not exactly a bad result though is it?

Plenty of our competitors have/are going to drop points to them.

We usec to have a results comparison thread out-lining the like for like results.  But after the 2013/2014 season it died a slow death as it was grim reading for two seasons.

But that reddit summary should still give some perspective. This season we possibly better at beating smaller teams, but less so the bigger ones, than last season.

But Roilbefok's tables project a worse season for us this year, 65-69 points. Title-winning performance as per APLT guidelines gets us to 82.

3ppg is the new 2ppg.

We've dragged ourselves up towards the latter mark, along with all the other contenders.  Irritating how Utd are managing to stay that one step ahead of it though, but the next month where things will start to get decided.

I know the APLT isn't supposed to lie, but it looks like Chelsea's form may be exaggerated?  They've  won five par 1 aways, which has got them holding up high - but they've had six, more than anyone else.  And bar ourselves and Spurs they've been the rubbishest ones - Stoke, WBA, early Leicester and Bournemouth (with West Ham and Everton to come in the next couple of weeks ffs).

And comparing with the par 1s we've had - West Ham, Stoke, Leicester, Man City, Spurs,

I don't see much in it. Maybe 1 more ordinary par 1 to win than us, but that's it. I think they'll be the hardest for us to climb over from 2nd to 6th. Even Man United have an array of difficult fixtures to come and we should target them and Arsenal next, but Chelsea - like us have already played all the big sides from 1st to 6th in the first half of the season and won't have to face another Top 6 side until the 22nd fixture.

They're sitting pretty imo.
