The referee was perhaps the biggest shithouse to have "officiated" one of our matches this season so far, imagine if Suarez would have dived for a penalty like that last night, could imagine the headlines, and to the best of my knowledge Suarez didn't ever win a dubious penalty either.

But a good old English "honest" player?, hardly a mention.

Mention it away but at the same time just remember every time a wind blows and a defender's shadow crosses a forwards path these days they go down. Ours included which is making the ref's job near nigh impossible. The lads got a few kicks last night but lets be honest todays 'crunching' tackles are a distant 6th cousin from what was in the game even 15 years ago. You cant even tussle for a 50-50 ball anymore and look its a bigger issue with the game where cheating is rampant. That is a the bigger issue than the odd hard mistimed tackle and the lads know they will get kicked in every game as more often than not they are half a yard quicker than the guy swinging his foot. That's going to lead to mistimed tackles and yes the odd lets crunch him in min 1 so he will think twice about doing me. Its should be part & parcel of the game...not this fall over and grab the ball lark if the wind blows the wrong direction.

Yes that makes it difficult (the diving), the solution would be to punish these players either during the match or retrospectively. So in this case IMO he should get a yellow card. Because no matter how much Skrtel is breathing on him, or 'almost' fouls him, it is not a foul if he doesn't foul him (smart aye?). Like the Sterling penalty argument really.

And crunching and mistimed tackles, well lets try to get these out of the game. 50-50 duels is and should be part of the game, of course it's not easy for a ref these days, but it's their freaking jobs. If they can't deal with those requirements, maybe they should be looking to get another job or International Football Association Board (IFAB) should be looking to modify the rules, get in new technology or whatever to help the refs.

I can't remember for sure, but I'd be surprised if he hadn't won any dubious ones. I can definitely remember a couple of really dodgy dives that *weren't* given!

CM dropping in between two centrebacks, and a central defender in a three, are different roles with different responsibilities. Both times that Skrtel and Can have been switched, it's because the other team were floating diagonal balls to a target player playing off Can. If Can has one weakness, it's positioning himself to head a flighted ball.

Thanks, just off the top of my head I think it was a Leicester goal he did struggle to get a head on a ball coming over him as he does seem to take a while to accelerate. Same against Valencia running onto through balls played behind him. Interesting to see how we will continue deploying him if Rodgers has indeed identified this slight weakness.

If I am a referee and I know that my erroneous calls can be dealt with by seeing the player blamed and fined etc. after the game, what motivation is now impacting my decision to give or not give a penalty?
Might I be slightly more inclined to give it, because if I am wrong, I can claim to be fooled and the player gets fined by the FA?
It may lead to more wrongly given penalties not less.

Full credit to Brendan Rodgers for this shit. After the amount of grief he took earlier on in the season for not being able to defend properly, he worked out a system and that system is gooooooood!

I'd be interested to know when the last time Lovren started a game.  Have a feeling that the switch to a back 3 and the introduction of Sahko to the back line are both big reasons for this change.

I think he was just curious.

Obviously the lad didn't do it on purpose, but the fact he was playing against the club he supports might have actually been the reason he was going in so hard for the challenges. Players get really geared up when they're playing against the club they'd most like to play for.

What motivation you say? Doing your job? Doing it to the best of your ability? If not, then you shouldn't be there any longer. Pride perhaps as well?

And other than that ok FA is perhaps not the best institution but hopefully and most likely will any action afterwards be carried out by people who can understand your second predicament. Sorry don't really see it your way, a lot of mays and perhaps. Which could go either way, or not, perhaps stay the same also.

I'm fairly sure Rafa either didn't/couldn't give him assurances he was after that he'd be a regular player or whether he just thought the writing was on the wall and left for regular football at Charlton. Either way he wasn't forced out. From memory we didn't sign Xabi until very late in the window(after the season had already started) and he had already left by then.

You only have to take a look at cricket to see how many times an umpire asks for a review on decisions they would have made themselves in the past. Guys are run out by miles its obvious for all to see but the ump calls for the tv review. Its human nature, just like making mistakes is human nature.

Apparently when Rafa arrived, Fulham inquired about his availability. Murphy said he wanted to hear what they offered and Rafa said "Adios" something along the lines of "I want players who want to play for Liverpool".

At the time he claims he wanted to work for an English manager so that his relationship would be 'crystal clear'. I am pretty sure they were his exact words. Charltons manager at the time was Curbishoey, from recollection.

Whatever. I liked Murphy when he played for us and have no strong feelings either way anymore.

In fact, almost as funny was when he initially responded "their penalty?"

It was the only one of the game, Raheem. It's probably a fairly safe bet which one he was talking about.

He probably meant their penalty wasn't one   8)

It was interesting to watch Brendan's predicament on the touchline, he wanted to win, he needed to score and he had Dan on the bench.

He also did not want Dan to have more than 30 minutes so if he brought him on after the goal at 60 minutes he might have scored but that could have meant him playing for 60, too long. The longer he delayed, the less chance they could score.

I think you could see the relief on Brendan's face when the second one went in as he knew then that Dan would not have to face another 50 and Stevie not go through 120 before Saturday, double joy I suspect.

Oh and Can was class last night, he has now officially arrived with that and Squaring up to Costa whilst not losing it last week. Dude he is.

Can is 21 (just)
Sterling 20
Countinho 22
Henderson is a veteran at 24
Sakho is 24
Moreno is 22
Markovic is 20

That was a team of kids

The Coutinho goal made a huge difference and not just for the win.

Two 120 minute mid-week matches for such a young team would take its toll not only in the Derby on Saturday evening but probably towards the end of the season as well.

We will be playing many more games this season if we make progress in the EL and won't be able to have the regular 6 day gaps in playing that we did last Spring in that incredible run to the finish line.

The last thing we need is cup replays and even worse, extra time. I reckon we will go for it at Palace next week.
Daniel got another short outing and Lucas has had a break so we are looking good for the hectic February matches.

I noticed Can is growing into his new position and gets himself out tight corners with some clever short passes.
We are definitely believers and we’ve won the fucking lot!
