What are your top 50 albums of all time?
« on: May 31, 2024, 03:48:58 pm »
As people keep debating the validity of some recent greatest albums ever lists, what would be in your personal 50? Not favourite, what you think are the greatest musical/artistic achievements? Or 20, if that's easier - I think the last list was 20 - 50 just seemed like the longest number manageable. I'll put mine up when I get time in the next week or so.

My top 10 changes all the time.
My top 100 would be impossible to pick, hand on heart.

I could give it a go, but not sure if I have the time to weight them up in proper order.
But I could throw together a list.

Oh yeah, it's just a fun exercise. The point is to share and discuss things we love and engage with other people's choices, not criticise or judge.

Is it 50 (or 20) albums I've actually listened to, as in the full album? Or albums that I think should be in the list? The reason I'm asking is because, like you say there's a lot of lists about what people think should be on the list, or what the music critics think. I don't know if I've listened to 50 full albums in my life. I've definitely dipped in and out of a lot. I'm probably over-thinking this though. It's just something I do  ::)

My 50 would not change much but the order definitely would
As I've said before, the Full English is just the base upon which the Scots/Welsh/NI have improved upon. Sorry but the Full English is the worst of the British breakfasts.

Well yeah, I think most music fans have listened to 50 albums all the way through.

I don't think I could name 50 albums and it's probably over 40yrs since I last bought one.

If I had to guess what it was it was most probably a China Crisis one though I couldn't tell you the name of it 🤷

this week it's Different Class by Pulp, 50 times - stonking album, listened to it growing up, is one of the best of the 90s

Ranking music is for squares though
I'm in a different mood sometimes, the favourites change. As they should, if you have a full, varied taste. Do you eat literally the same thing every single day?

Although Iam not their greatest fan and half of the stuff on it was grafted from the Real People's demo tapes I'd say Oasis - Definetly Maybe . Music at the time was pretty bland and that came along and blew the roof off.

At home I'm currently listening to War of the Worlds - find it quite soothing while working, Tubular Bells, My Love is Cool by Wolf Alice and Disreali Gears and Fresh Cream by Cream. I'll be listening to Kings Of Leon a bit more as I'm taking the lad to see them next month.

In the car I've got Creedence Clearwater Revival, Slipknot, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Wolf Alice, Katie Pruit, Live, Pink Floyd, The Faces and Rammstein on the go. Went to see the ABBA voyage thing with the missus, will be going to Rewind in August and going to see Kim Wilde next year.

Errm yes, I do. (I'll spare you the details of my rigid daily regimen but I stick with it through thick and thin) In my book eating different stuff is akin to wearing a half n half scarf or changing which football team you support day by day. You  absolute monster.  ;D

I was thinking maybe I could draw up a list of 50 albums, one album per artist only and in alpahbetical order if that'd be ok ?

Some of mine would be the album of a particular band that I had just discovered back in the mid to late 80s. Before I had reached 14 I was into ska but then I started listening to albums that my older brother had. These albums put me on a new trajectory: from ska to rock. Top Priority by Rory Gallagher started my love affair with Rory and is one I go back to a lot. That intro, woah! Then I discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd on Gimme Back My Bullets and Wish You Were Here set me off on following Pink Floyd. These three albums changed my music taste and it's been that way for 40 odd years, with blues and metal discovered along the way. So that's three albums, forty-seven to go...
